Mercs Results Start Coming In!
April 13, 2013 by stuart
On the 13th April we were delighted to be working with the guys at Mercs Minis to bring you the first global campaign day – Operation Paradigm Shift. Many clubs across the world signed aboard (in secret of course!) to get involved and are sending us photos and sharing their experiences. Whether Paradigm Shift was your first experience of this fantastic game or just the latest and greatest clash between the MegaCons at your local gaming place it doesn't matter - just get stuck in!
The event pack allows players to get involved in two unique scenarios - each with their own special rules and play styles. Even after the Paradigm Shift - these scenarios are a great resource to play in Mercs games at home or your local club.
Ferocious battling has seen the Kem'Var victorious here at Tabletop Nation - having driven off the other MegaCons in a series of battles. Even the involvement of the FCC using the campaign's exciting Infiltration game mechanic couldn't prevent the ISS from finishing last. But we are one location and this campaign is truly global. Results are coming in from as far afield as Hong Kong, Germany, the United States and (if rumour has it) a hut within the Arctic Circle.
Any MegaCon that has an average score less than 15 will be in jeopardy of dissolution. The MegaCon with the lowest score will be dissolved and their demise will be written into the history. That said, players need not fear their purchase will become obsolete - in effect, the once proud MegaCon will become a rogue squad, up for sale to the highest bidder, FCC or MegaCon.
Because of the multiple timezones and various videos and photos we have to wade through, we will keep the results form open until Sunday 21st April. Remember to submit your results at the following link: //www.beastsofwar.com/paradigm-shift-results/
Will it be a Greek tragedy for the ISS? Stay tuned to Beasts of War as the last results are counted!

Any news? Are the global results on a different page?
Global results will be presented around the 22nd (ish). Putting up specific and detailed results ‘in medias res’ might encourage unscrupulous MegaCons to pitch in results to swing it… I’ll add a top 3 and bottom 3 through the week to give people an idea how things are playing out but won’t give a particular order to those top three and bottom three…
The title seems slightly misleading; looks like they’ll be gathering results until 21st.
Why has Stu singled out ISS? Are preliminary results pointing in that direction?
If the faction gets some new models as a result of that, then Greek tragedy wouldn’t be half bad. 😛
I would not disagree there, it was the only faction that really interested me, probably because I am from there and I was intrigued to read their background, but the models left me completely cold. Now a “newly” released faction that by designers admittance is a really hard to play does bad in a global tournament, colour me not surprised, will be laughable to see them dissolved when they do not have yet a proper background. That been said I find the whole “whoever does bad will get destroyed” a bad idea, the background, whatever little there is, makes almost… Read more »
I was also interested in ISS, mainly because I liked their sea-faring background and because they geographically coincide with my location, but the minis … yeah. I had exact same thoughts about the background changes; say Kemvar looses – do the winners take over the energy sector/merge the assets with their MegaCon? ISS losing their monopoly on ocean trade lanes seems far more plausible. “All” that would take FCC do destabilize them would be some strategic overtakes/shutdowns of important ISS ports and a few attacks on their personnel transportation, that would make it economically unjustifiable for other MegaCons to continue… Read more »
I really dislike this too.
Specially when they haven’t even introduce the other factions.
All in all these campaigns where the loser gets disbanded just leave me with a sour taste in my mouth
But then they won’t cease to exist as a playable, officially supported faction. I actually prefer this than the 40k’s stale, standstill background. I think MERCS is a kind of game that allows far more freedom when playing and experimenting with background. The small number of model (and no characters “burdened” with a story arc and a need to keep surviving – looking at you Karchev) makes it much more flexible in that segment.
I wonder if the change in background will be included in the second printing of the book though.
I feel the games IP is too young and undeveloped (on needs more maturing if you will) for such stunts, the established background places the megacons at countries status and the event does not look that shattering, if I have not misunderstood the entire background completely the merc teams shown are just the best teams the megacons have, but beyond them there are other teams, and an entire infrastructure of a huge country, citizens it makes little to no sense how if a megacon losses some assets that it will be dissolved, its like saying a country’s fate will be… Read more »
Freedom’s one thing. Spending £££ on minis and seeing their fluff torn up before you’ve (well, I’ve) even got primer on them is another. If one of the megacorps I’ve bought gets relegated to a band of mercenaries, I’ll not be happy.
I can understand you didn’t buy a band of mercenaries when you were getting into the game … but that’s mainly a matter of perspective; I’d say pretty much all the factions are bands of mercenaries – after all they’re in it to climb the corporate ladder, not to salute a flag. So if they retain their clean appearance, neat graphic design and the status of a corporate body (just a smaller one), you’d be alright? Or is it the fact that they lost territory bothering you?
ISS loses? Two words: “New Atlantis”.
I’m pretty sure the ISS thing was only mentioned, so he could say about it being a Greek tragedy, i wouldn’t read too much into it
The iss over on the MERCS forums have been doing well. Just cos they lost in one place does not mean they lost overall. Relax and see how all the results look after the 21st
“Ferocious battling has seen the Kem’Var victorious here at Tabletop Nation – having driven off the other MegaCons in a series of battles. Only way you would have thought otherwise would have been if you had skim read the article or just read the red text at the bottom! 😉 Overall the… Read more »
No I got it from the first read, my point is first I do not like this idea whoever that may be and second I do not see the mercs fluff support such a thing happening.
As I said megacons are effectively countries, I cannot see them get “dissolved” so easily.
*really* big acid vats ought to do it.
LOL good one, I will have to hand it to you.
I quite like the concept, that the loses gets dissolved, suits the whole corporate setting (those that cant compete are left behind). Plus at the end of the day its just the fluff, in your game make your own, or play at a different time frame. There isnt a black library for mercs where you wont get to see your faction being explored, it will mainly be a couple of pages in new rule books. As long as the models are playable, and if new models become available for the faction (not sure if this is the case) then i… Read more »
Though I’ve taken the role of a devil’s advocate in this debate I can understand both sides; changing fluff can take the game into another dimension and make it feel “alive”. But I understand that dramatic changes to one’s favorite faction are an emotional thing (hell, I cursed Jaime Lannister myself :D).
Given the chance I’d probably take the direction of rewarding, rather than punishing; I’d reward the winner of the campaign in some way – new models, new profiles for existing models, expansion of assets in fluff, … perhaps even holdings on moon or mars, who knows. 😀
So Kemvar will probably win. I will not be surprised. Easy to play, competitive factions will perform better than the others. Kemvar and Texico are quite straightforward ones. Moreover in a postioning based game, fast and elusive ones will always have an edge. Maybe ISS and USCR players will need more time to master their factions. USCR have been here for a while, and unless they win their suppression themed (boring) gameplay, they are systematically outmaneuvered because too slow to get good fighting positions and firing lanes fast. I know 3 guys locally who are thinking of giving up the… Read more »
On the other hand Mercs is a game with clever and original mechanisms. A very good beer and bretzel, once in a while, casual game. It’s just not aimed at competitive play IMHO in its actual form.
Anymore news yet?
any update on when we will get the results???
What’s the matter? So busy counting the Myth kickstarter profits that you don’t have time to tally up the results?
Great way to build excitement with a global campaign and then let it just rot in place.
Get your heads out of the bank account and publish the results!
A) This event was run by Beasts of War and Tabletop Nation – not MERCS.
B) The Myth Kickstarter was run by MERCS Minis.
C) There is zero reason to assume the Kickstarter is in any way related to the delay in results.
OK, my bad. I did not know this.
My appologies to the MERCS boys, I think this game is awesome.
So my next question is:
Beasts of War & Tabletop Nation – what is taking so long?
1st report was 15 April, it is now May…
Why promote something so well and then drop it in mid stream?
