We Get Our First Glimpse at the Mechanics of Dragons Maze
April 9, 2013 by dracs
Wizards of the Coast have provided us with our first glimpse at the new game mechanic which will be appearing in the next Magic the Gathering set Dragon's Maze. A return to a mechanic from the original Ravnica block with a slight twist.
Split cards first appeared in the very original Ravnica block and allowed players to cast one or the other of the two spells they depicted.
Well Dragon's Maze is bringing its own take to this with Fuse. This will allow you the choice of casting either of the two spells or, by paying the combined mana cost of both, cast both spells at once. It's a two for one deal!
We have also been given a glimpse of a new mythic rare land card. The titular maze of the set, Maze's End.
The ability to continually summon gates from your library is definitely not to be sneezed at and I love the winning condition as it would require a player to have a deck made up of each of the ten different Ravnican guilds. I would say that's going to be hard to pull off, but if you know a combo to make it work please let us know in the comments section.
The card gallery for Dragon's Maze has just gone up and will be continually updated with new images as we draw towards the pre-release. From what we can see already this set is going to bring some really vicious cards to play.
Who else is psyched for the Dragon's Maze?

Not to be a stickler, but Split cards first appeared in the Invasion block.
Some of these cards are insane. I’m liking the Fuse mechanic though, gives more flexibility per card-choice.
Glad someone caught that before I had to mention it. The guys at Beasts of War are not really known to be Magic players or Role Players so they miss a lot of stuff. I think it’s time for them to hire a freelancer that knows their stuff.
(I was going to freelance at WotC during the time they still had the Star Wars licence to do some work on the RPG, just saying lol, been role playing since I was four and been playing Magic since 1996)
Its good to see split cards back. Back in day I really liked that mechanic. And yes, just like tavenknaughtlin said those were already in Invasion block.
By the way guys, you should mention that Dragon Maze packs will include an extra Non Basic Land card in each pack instead of the normal Foil Land card and that the Non Basic lands are being reprinted in Dragon Maze from the earlier two sets.
I just took a look at the new artifacts that were spoiled, Cluestones. Common artifacts that give a mana for what ever guild they belong to. Their alternative ability is to pay two mana of various colors according to which guild they belong to and draw a card. Each one costs three mana
These are a trap, do not use them. You are better off using the keyrunes and have a creature. They do the same for your mana as the Cluestones and cost the same.
I should mention that you have to sacrifice the Cluestone when you pay the mana to draw a card.
