The Beautiful Goddess of Wisdom Steps Out of Agora
April 2, 2013 by dracs
Agora have released the latest member of their sci-fi Greek pantheon, the beautiful Athena, who is definitely not suitable for work.
As you can see, Agora's Athena is excellently sculpted, striking a heroic pose and bearing the weaponry of a sci-fi hoplite. Well, most of it anyway, she's rather lacking in the armour department.
Now here we have a problem which is all too common in gaming. When does nudity just become gratuitous? On the one hand it is an excellent sculpt, but if she is a warrior why isn't she wearing armour? Then again a lot of the classic Greek depictions that these minis draw inspiration from are nude.
What are your thoughts on this mini?
black bar …..really ?
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, Yes sir…
Well bloody well kneet theesen a jumper wi’it and put it on lass!
Tha’ll catch thee death o’cauld.
ps internet brownie points if you spotted the reference to Athena as goddess of crafts and industry 😉
Yeah sorry I censor them for the feature images, but didn’t realise I’d put the censored image in the post too.
You could easily paint on a cybernetic skin suit.
like the quality of the Agora models and I do see that Greek art often shows men and women nude, but I can’t see myself with models that depict women like that. Can our hobby please move beyond the pinup model?
As much as I frown on pointless nudity, I don’t think this is pointless in this instance, they are very beautiful sculpts, art.
This figure was done by Thomas David. He is also responsible for most of the sculpts from the Kingdom Death line. He works with human representations in the same way many great artists have done. These are collector figures in resin and not even part of any game. It is the clash of what we consider classical and our naked vulnerability to our dependence on technology. I don’t collect green army men, I collect miniature works of art by the masters in the field. Were this a giant statue in stone, nobody would be saying anything. So for anyone who… Read more »
A little harsh but fully understand and agree with the sentiment. However just a point I’m yet to find a model of a male in the same vein.
I love art and I’ve seen sculptures of nude women and men even in public settings as perfectly fine. But to say that miniatures are in that same class is small bit of a stretch. Yes they can be very nice looking but most art has a message or a study of something.
Kingdom Death line is one of the few lines I stay away because of the down right depiction of women as being objects of men. I have nothing against Thomas David himself but I do find is view of women rather disturbing.
i honestly hadn’t seen anything suggesting these models or others suggesting women were objects of men however i find it… well i understand why but it is a double standard… there aren’t any sculpts of men in a similar vein indeed I believe this same miniatures (company? set?) contains zeus and ares neither of whom are as scantily clad as the women of the range… may not personally be my thing but it is a double standard.
As far as the depictions in the Kingdom Death line The women are depicted as objects because they have basically been created by lesser gods. It’s part of the back story that these boss characters have minions around them that serve them. The whole point is that you find it disturbing. Art is meant to move the viewer. Having spent time in art school an artist loves when you like their work. They also love when you hate it because you feel something towards their work. The worst thing you can say to an artist is Meh.
No, I think “censorship” < which it isn't as this is BoW's website < is necessary and healthy here. This is a kids website as well.
That said this is art, but if you want to get into it, some might say this comes under 'erotica' though that's a quite a large debate that I assume no one wants to get into as many a thick text book has been written trying to determine what is and what isn't.
I applaud BoW for keeping this website kids-friendly. … (he says, despite not being able to not swear every other post….)
Thats one amazing looking sculpt right there. She might not have much of armor but she is supposed to be Goddess so she might not even need one.
