Rivet Wars Engulfs Kickstarter in a Chibi War to End All War
January 9, 2013 by dracs
Cool Mini Or Not have recently started a kickstarter game in order to create a new strategy board game, which takes us to a world where WWI never quite ended. And everything happened in a cutesy chibi art style.
Rivet Wars is a weird world war strategy board game, which draws its inspiration from many popular RTS games such as Rise of Nations. Players need to gather resources by capturing key locations in order to bring out more troops and gain access to more powerful technologies.
The miniatures themselves keep with the vibrant designs we see in the artwork.
As you can see the miniatures look fairly nice, particularly the larger vehicles and walkers. Personally I would really like to get a hands on look at these to see what they are like.
Having recently played, and enjoyed, the Warcraft board game (the strategy one, not the WoW one) the idea of board games following the style of computer RTS games is something I really like the sound of. I got into wargaming thanks to games like Age of Empires and these sorts of board games just reawaken that old love in me.
If you want to find out more, or pledge your support to making this board game happen, head over to the kickstarter project now.
Thanks to Vondrasky for pointing this out to us.

Looks like fun and my type of game, but as usual the high shipping charges forces me to wait until its released rather than supporting with kickstarter.
I feel ya there man, I just let my $250 Kingdom death pledge go because of the dawning realization that it costs an absolute bomb when you add VAT and other nonsense to the total.
It’s a shame really but I’ve got to eat. Another time, maybe! xD
We need to find a suitable sprue-based diet, but you can always eat your nails 😛
‘Cor! If I could live off of plastic sprues I’d be alright! xD
I forgot about the VAt, the 20% VAT and the £8 handling charge for the post office to take your money, is a killer.
Your pre-order of the £56 game suddenly cost you £94!
In all fairness I think CMON have found a way around the VAT issue, they use the U.K as a base to deliver projects to their European backers (as opposed to the U.S) so that takes a little of the sting away, at least I think so. Not 100% sure on that one! There’s been no such luck with Kingdom Death though which means I’ll just wait and see how it develops, I really hope they get an UK distributor sorted as importing even single 28mm minis is pretty eye watering! 🙁 As for Rivet Wars, it seems cool an… Read more »
I have to agree.
The game looks like it could be quite entertaining but the asthetic design of the minis is crap.
I asked them and indeed they will send european orders from the UK. you still have to pay the 25$ Shipping fee but no customs.
Sam: 😀
The shipping cost is not cheap, but if includes tracking is perfect ( at least for me that i have to wait months to get things from overseas ).
The aesthetic is the whole point of the game ( i know, also the RTS element is really cool but at least for me is not the main one ), think of it as insane cartoon series from some of those nasty nightly shows. Maybe you can give the gruesome and odd touch to be utterly hilarious for more mature audience.
Its too cute to resist 🙂
Looks like a fun game. If your a good painter then its a bonus. Second thought you could paint them in simple colours as it would fit the cartoony style.
Sounds good but I feel a tad uncomfortable with the chibi style for this.
There was nothing cutesy about life in the trenches.
Am also not enamoured of the stylisation of the figures. The machinery is not too bad though.
I know, it’s only a game before someone says 😉
That’s what i was thinking. I feel it would need a good paint job to be an immersive game and not fall in a “childish” visual category (which i’m not fond of when i think wargame).
Wait & see !
Reminds me Katsuhiro Otomo’s short film Cannon Fodder in the graphism.
Personally I really liked the art style and this is why I joined from the start.
I can’t get excited over this I find the figures off putting. I’ll be interested in the mechanics of the game but that will probably be it for me.
Unless it turns out to great fun of course.
Not too keen on the figures as they look like Fisher Price people.
It would be nice to get clarification on how much extra it would cost to get these to your front door.
Was sorry I missed out on the Zombicide but will live without this I think.
Right at the bottom of the page its says that the models are shipped from UK to EU so there are no more taxes to pay and the $25 covers their additional costs to get it to the UK for distribution.
Gameplay sounds cool, and I like the concept. But the design and esthetic of the models is not exactly to my taste. I’ll see if I change my mind as we get closer to the end of the Kickstarter.
And suddenly I want to make an Advance Wars boardgame…
