A Magma Dragon Stalks into the Warhammer Old World
September 10, 2012 by brennon
Seemingly not appearing on the Forge World Website, Games Workshop unleashed the mighty Magma Dragon on the Old World via their What's New Today section of the website...
This mighty beast (I would imagine) is available through the Monstrous Arcanum book, a massive tome full of the mighty beasts of the Old World. I quite like this take on the typical dragon, giving it a squat look. You can see this living below the ground, stalking out from smoking caves looking for the next meal. Certainly more salamander looking, and that raises a question on it being a pretty awesome addition to the Lizardman force?
Also, rumours point to the next big book release from Warhammer Forge will be a look at the battles of Blackfire Pass. The death of Marius Leitdorf and other legendary moments will be retold next year.
What do you think of the Magma Dragon?

Marius Leitdorf was slain by the Orc Warlord Vorgaz Ironjaw

Yeah Marius died at the third Battle for Blackfire Pass where his sacrifice allowed Karl Franz’s army to blindside the Orc Horde.
Obviously the history of Blackfire Pass is a long one with plenty of battles there stretching back to Sigmar’s time. From the rumours circulating Marius Leitdorf is making an appearance alongside a new line of Knights too.
BoW Ben
The dragon’s wings look too tiny for it be able to do any sort of flying. I like the the body, but the wings and the pose make it look like a baby dragon.
Really like it, has a different feel to it as opposed to the usual fantasy dragon stereotype which are lithe, slender and ‘handsome’ creatures.
This resembles a dinosaur, a more ancient, hulking and muscular creature. Looks a bit like a cross between a snapping turtle and a gila monster with wings, two very nasty and dangerous creatures indeed!
>This resembles a dinosaur
As imagined in the late 1800’s maybe.
The poor guy needs to lay off the adventurers and go on strict kobold diet, because old Smaug sure let himself go full fatty mcfat.
Not heard of Ankylosaurus then, I take it?
I did in fact. It certainly didn’t have sprawled crocodlian limbs and overall looks of a road-killed frog.
Well if you’re going to be deliberately obtuse then I’m going to have to disagree that the above model looks anything like a ‘road-killed frog’. That’s just plain STUPID. 😉
It sure as hell doesn’t look like anything else tho, and i agree, it is a very stupid model. What next, anorectic slann?
That isn’t a dragon.
Fearsome monster certainly but a drake? Nah.
The only thing I don’t like is the way the right foreleg is placed on the tree stump.
Looks too awkward to me.
That’s one big horny toad!
That is one line I did never think I would read on BoW 😉
Hmm, I rather like it – that dragon is a beast, no a wise serpent, but a brute.
Grown too large and fat to fly, the wings more often used in threat displays – making the massive beast seem even larger.
Perhaps not ferocious, but grown old and complacent as the greatest beast in the mire.
