Painting a 40K Blood Ravens Space Marine
December 10, 2010 by lloyd
So boys and girls if you know about Awesome Paint Job then this wont be news to you.
But if you don't then here's a good tutorial from Les showing how to paint a Warhammer 40K Blood Ravens Space Marine.
There's an interesting part in the video showing how Les uses Silly Putty to mask the shoulder pads.
Any way I just though I would pop this on the site for the weekend so we could all enjoy the soothing tone of Les's voice lol.

I like the video, but i dont know if i could agree his voice is soothing :P, this is making me want to try my hand at air brushing again.
Really great stuff, I wish my hands were as steady! 🙂 I like the green on the seal wax, nice idea. Anyone know what he secured the model to? and how it was secured?
My voice isn’t soothing? Aww Lol. The model is stuck to an empty GW pot using Blu-tac. It’s used to hang posters without damaging your walls and many brands make similar stuff.
great work as always Les 🙂 i miss talking to you on vent man!
Stunning work.
I do believe that i may have to attempt to do something similar for the wolves army i am currently building.
Quick question, does GW paint cause any real issues through the airbrush? or am I better off trying to mix a custom Vallejo Air ‘match’ for the tone I want?
i love blood ravens and have a 3000 piont army and i used all gw paints . but i really love this video .less did a grate job .
what paint gun did you use and can you use the gw paint gun?
I used an Iwata HP-CS in this video. You can use the GW spray gun to base coat and do the first highlights from above but you will not be able to do detail highlights. The GW gun is basically a spray can you can fill with any color you choose.
I need a air brush or paint gun. Very awsome video.
can somebody give me some advice on airbrushes i really need one but have no idea which one to get is the GW one any good and if so will the vallejo air paints work with it?
You’ll need to do a bit of googling to get the right info but to begin with you’ll probably want whats called a DOUBLE ACTING, INTERNAL MIX brush. These are flexible and pretty easy to use. The DA means you control both paint and air flow at the same time. INTERNAL MIX means the paint is drawn into the body of the bruch before exiting through the nozzle. I think external mix can be used to get very prcise lines though. Also you’ll need a pretty good oil free compressor. Don’t go to the hardware shop and get and industrial… Read more »
wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Finally! more painting videos!
Thank you BoW and APJ!
cool more painting videos but this one creeps me out the music and the voice of the dud no offence i think cuz i night time or something idk but cool!!!
Wow, this is like when your favourite superheroes team up! Keep the goodness coming!
Miraclously, the result is completely clean and leaves every detail visible… In spite of the number of opaque coats, the undercoats spread upon other coats, the thickness of the washes, etc.
I kept cringing all the time thinking you’d ruin it completely drowning and covering up all the details, being myself an adept of the multiplication of very thin glazes on my white-undercoated minis… I’m glad you proved me wrong.
The airbrush is a wonderful tool I must try for myself, and your technique is masterful.
Thank you again for this illuminating experience.
Oh, I forgot to ask…
Doesn’t the pen change color after a while ? I’ve found that some inks become clearer, blueish, greenish or reddish with the passage of time. Is a varnish enough to prevent this ?
Why do you pant the shoulderpads on the mini then mask them rather than painting them mounted on a toothpick or something similar?
I know I’m outclassed when a painter talks about painting the “fronter quarter of the eye lens” – brilliant job 🙂
I’d love to see how you paint faces and skin. I need some advice on doing eyes. Most of the time I just leave them shaded dark and don’t bother with adding the whites but if you do them I’ll take a swing at it after I see it.
Oh, btw the putty is a great idea Im going to add to my painting kit as well as the micro pen.
Awsome stuff, but rather high-level. Where is John with his easy but awsome-looking painting tutorials?
It’s nice to see the high level methods even if you never try them out 🙂
As good as always Les!!
I have followed you from months ago!!
