Darrell has a look at the ripper swarms for the Tyranids and finds out if there's any reason that you could have more than one unit mounted on one base.

That’s a really good idea!
👿
I have to say, that would make me scared.
The thing is, I don’t see a benefit too you that doesn’t apply to your opponent as well. Taller Longfangs would be seen from everywhere, shorter guys wouldn’t be able to see much, bigger bases would allow templates easier and increase frontage in combat… I don’t see it happening, and I certainly don’t see it as advantageous.
Its for coolness though, and coolness beats rules.
If you are going to go with that many just do your worst and get one of the valkyrie bases.
lol im likin this idea 🙂
That does sound really cool, and technically ALL the rippers will all ways be in base contact, so get there full attacks.
I like Darrell’s Idea for his long fangs :P, I wonder if you could get an opponent to agree to letting you use it lol
Ok, if the purpose for the one large base is to use it as a movement tray for the 30 ripper swarms bases. Then I sat go for it. It’s a great idea.
But if the purpose was to create 1 massive ripper swarm, I would have to say no.
This would create a swarm with 90 wounds. And any temple hits would only cause 1 wound, there’s only one base being hit.
The down side is that one wound by a strength 6 weapon will kill the entire swarm, do to the instant death rule.
surely if there’s only one base, it only counts as 1 base of rippers, not 3, not 30, regardless of how many of the things you put on there. You buy them per base, so they have to be modelled as such, with the ability to remove a base when it is destroyed.
I agree, as one base I would allow it, but not a representation of more than one.
I wouldn’t allow it in my game, not because its not cool, but because it brings up rules questions. Namely, swarms being vulnerable to templates. This would be hard to work out because with standard bases you can spread them out so templates only hit one or two bases, placing them all on one base will only cause arguments. As an objective marker fine, or if you work out some rulings before hand that we can both agree on fine, but not if you just randomly showed up and wanted to play.
I have a few of my models on scenic bases, including Kantor on a terminator base, and one of my dreadnoughts on a massive flat rock giving him about 12-14mm height advantage! We joke about the advantages and dissadvantages and extra coversaves and suchlike, but its fine and doesnt realy make that much difference, but if it came to a nitty gritty situation I obviously would account for the alterations.
That I’m not arguing, I love scenic bases, or altered bases, but the idea I got from the video was using a dreadnaught base to represent multiple bases of ripper swarms. To me thats like placing two terminators on the same base and counting it as two models. I may have misunderstood the intention of the video, but my thought process remains the same. As spongeman said, if the altered base represents just one 3 wound swarm, I have no problem with it, in fact I would encourage the creativity.
I am going to buy a a box of trees and put my longfangs in the upper branches. With the tree glued to they’er base
Sigh, leave it to Darrell to take the hobby side of this conversation and relate it to cheese. Go ahead and place your ape-fang squads in upper branches, but if you use it for line of sight, so will I 😉
“sniff sniff” It smells like someone melta’d a monkey…
way to tell them Darrel, we need to see some of the 2nd Ed cheese to come back!! Like multible levels on ork trucks to acomediate the unlimited amount of orks they could carry and the tact gluing of grots on to them
Can I target the trees with missile launchers? “If the bough breaks the Long fangs will fall.” Instant death.
Carnifex brood on one base? I think so! Oh wait they doubled in points, nah…
What if you had to procksy a model, like thunder-wolf cavalry & the like?
How can you fine out what is the right base for that kind of model?
Darrell, any chance I could persuade you to show some video love to Flames of War? If you felt especially generous, I’m building an Irish Guard Tank co any with Joe Vandeleur and I’d love your input on his special rules and how to build a force so as to maximize them.
I should have mentioned: Irish Guards can be found in the Hell’s Highway briefing (codex).
I had a similar idea to this a while back with my nid army.. What I decided to do in the end, that sadly I never got round to doing, was make a big scenic base with ripper swarms on it, but have holes cut out and spaced evenly apart for the normal ripper swarm bases to go into. That way, you don’t affect the rules because each swarm is still on its own base (and you won’t get your ass whipped by template weapons), the swarm looks generally bigger (because you put a lot more rippers on in general… Read more »
