they might be having to put pricing up to cover the costs of the new units and codexes that have come/will be comming out, it may also be for replacing the old metal models e.g. necron immortals to make them plactic
“Paint to sell” people would buy more often at a lower price, knowing it woud sell for double once painted up good. GW couldthen get money as people would need the rulebooks to know what they are buying/using. I also remember boxes used to be pocket money prices so you could get a small box every week or two. This hooked in the younger gamers. paperhammer makes quick and cheap alternative for your 40k vehicles, papercraft in general replaces peoples need for those overpriced scenery. My hobby is more the painting of models than wargaming so GW price themselves out… Read more »
So true what Darrel said about that now people can’t afford to start another army. I wouldn’t have minded starting a Fantasy army but the Prices are ridiculous. Thats why I’m now collecting alternative armies form Mantic. Its really sad because I know people who would get into this game so much and would love it but they don’t have the Huge Chest of gold to afford it.
My basic take on the gw 2009 figures is this. sales £125m profit after costs £9m I know 9m is a lot of money, but 7% is good but not huge. Especially when things have been poor for gw recently. They are still paying £1m a year on loan payments. Their pension payments aren’t cheap either. More interesting is the fact that cost of sales is only £34m, this is the cost of paper/plastic and metal. The bulk of the cost is design, development and staff. This does show they are reinvesting into future products. This I feel is money… Read more »
I live in the US, and over here GW is pretty cut throat in my opinion. All business practices aside I think that these price increases are overkill. I have friends who love 40k and fantasy but are unable to play because of the price as they were in 2005.black reach launched for 50$ here, but now it’s 90$.I think you are right in speculating that they set themselves as a premium product and I think that has started to slow the growth of the wargaming industry especially for youth here . I’m sorry but parents aren’t going to shell… Read more »
Great video! Just found it. I sent GW an angry email (that Im sure they didnt read) about 2 months ago, ranting about exactly this. They would have sold me a whirlwind if they didnt put the prices up and now I havent bought anything since, even tho like darrell, 40k and now fantasy are my only games. I would love to find out the cost price of the products. I’d imagine a tactical squad couldn’t cost more than 4 or 5 pounds to make. Then you have all the other costs to include with wages and transport and all… Read more »
I could not agree More! For buying cheap models i found that going to war-Games show events you can get old or new GW models for Cheap. A full army all assembled and mat painted in chaos black for as little as £40 i kid you not better than going to the shop there used to be a great bunch of guys. AKA Staff at the Plaza in New Oxford street Good old Zac and his Bozs ;-D who always helped you out and did not try and force you and buy unlike the sellers of today. It’s a real… Read more »

This seems to point that GW made a lot more money in 2009 than they did in 2008. Most of the document is way above my head.
Also share prices are back to where they where in 2005, which was a massive year for GW, i am assuming thats the year the Lord of the Rings came out?
