Warmachine Gets Colossal!
February 3, 2012 by dracs
The Colossals are coming! Privateer Press have just put up a vid previewing these massive, and very welcome, upcoming additions to Warmachine.
The Colossals have been appearing here and there in the Warmachine background for a while now and it is great to see them stomping there way onto the battlefield.
We've already had to peel Justin away from the pic of the Khador Conquest.
These guys are twice the height of a normal heavy Warjack and come with enough fire power to cause some serious slaughter.
Not only that, but these guys have two damage grids! Check out this stat card for the Mercenaries' Galleon.
So far we have only seen the Colossals which will be joining Khador and Cygnar, but from the glimpses of artwork the video gives us I cannot wait to see how some of these turn out.
Just take a look at the Cryx's Kraken!
These have got us all really excited here at Beasts of War and we cannot wait to get our hands on the book around July time.
Let the massive mechanical mayhem commence!
What are you guys hoping to see in this latest development? And does this image mean they will be doing the same for Hordes too?
I really hope this doesn’t go down the road of 40k Apocalypse with the emphasis shifting from skirmish game to larger and larger forces. Given the image I’d say its only a matter of time before we see similar stuff for hordes
I think alot of people are worried a little too much… With the current rule system and game play it would be impossible to run large scale battles. because of how in depth the game is when it comes to each individual piece. I couldnt imagine trying to play to large a scale game and trying to remember what each piece does and then trying to employ a turn by turn tactical advance would be way to cumbersome and hard to try and manage. They are just adding nice little eye candy pieces and special movements and abilities here and… Read more »
jeebus TFC that was amazing! just a shame the worst looking one was khador.
cygnar – massive thunderhead!
cryx – evil crab!
mercs – emperor titan!
menoth – white md geist!
scyrah – guyver!
khador – lego
lol reminds me of the end of my IKRPG campaign where I used epic-scale scenery and epic-scaled counters for infantry squads, and an AT-43 Dotch Yaga as a refitted Khadoran Colossal pressed into service to attack Ord. Good times.
I’m certainly looking forward to the Colossal minis themselves, especially since the Mercs are getting one, but how their existence changes the way people want to play Warmachine remains to be seen..
GW could really take a leaf out of Privateer Press’s book. That is how you make a video to promote a release.
I SWEAR there are videos like this from GW, but they are never put up on their Website. I recall seeing a good vid for Dark Eldar with Jervis or whatnot, but I found it on Youtube. Crazy.
yup they made a whole designer-blog with 3 consecutive videos for Dark Eldar where they spoke about every part going deep into the cultural part of the Dark Eldar society
btw :

the video(s)
They don’t exactly have the panache of the Privateer video, do they? Privateer have clearly taken their presentational approach from a certain style of documentary film-making, whereas GW have put three blokes in front of a camera. (Not that there’s anything wrong with three blokes in front of a camera… 😉 )
By the way, the computer-generated subtitles on that GW video are seriously good for a laugh. Bizarrely obsessed with politics as well, for some reason…
I just love hearing the GW designers speak and their thoughts. Not too bothered about the presentation. Just a shame these Dark Eldar vids are a one off.
@partisan
It is possible for people to enjoy and play more than one war game system.
Granted, some however do find great difficulty in chewing gum and walking…
Will the war gaming community ever reach a place where it can be free off infantile antics as listed,” who cares about a Dark Eldar video ???”
Privateer Press deserves some credit their game system is fantastic.
I must admit I dont understand whats going on right now did I do something wrong or do I understand that wrong what you are saying right now :-/ (sorry if I do so )
I havent said a word about that there is only one game o.O but poosh mentioned those vids and I just helped him out as he seemed to not recall them …thats all ….
These are the ones! Little gems!
Ah, these videos were pretty sweet stuff. Why don’t they do this every time?
@ partisan and poosh
my bad I thought you guys were throwing 40k spam at what i thought was a great add by PP…
sorry and go ahead and tune me up its cool just would like to cheer PP on without some reference to GW
Theres a big class warfare over the 2 games in my neck of woods
and at first I was on one side or other now a days would just like to play both
also you will see spots of it here and other places online at times a mis read on my part
Peace
So were ancient colossals that were mentioned in fluff about same size as these?
ancient colossal were bigger
There was a piece of artwork in one of the RPG’s books (might’ve been the Witchfire Trilogy but don’t quote me on that) that showed the wreck of one of those ancient Colossals. Found it with Google, though:

Gorgeous art + Awesome concept + Superb models + Painting tips = Epic video.
This is so sexy…
BoW Romain
sexy man, doesnt even begin to describe it
I couldn’t agree more Romain. This looks awesome. I especially love the Cygnar colossal, it’s very attractive.
Wow. I want that Menoth one.
Interesting idea basically Warjack titans will need to wait for more details but like the idea but do wonder how they are going to be implemented as seeing as the standard game size at my club is 25 I have funny feeling these won’t be appearing in many of my games though probably still buy the cryx and cygnar ones to paint and try out once or twice for a change.
They are 18-20 pts, and they are part of your battlegroup, so you could run one in 25 pts easily.
for a 15 mm player , these could convert to awesome mecha….
Having my Khador force collecting dust on a shelf doesn’t matter, I’m buying the Conquest just for the awesome model and it will look nice painted beside its smaller kindred. 🙂
That last one I take it is a nod to the Hordes players that will most likely say “What? We never get cool stuff first”. All it is is them saying thay we’re not forgotten. I think I’ll call that a Mountain Troll!
This just might get me into plating WM.
As cool as the models look. I just can’t help wondering the price. The battle engines IMO are horribly expensive. I like warmachine, I play warmachine, but I stopped at the two player battlebox. Prices are no better than GW on MOST things. Yes, you need less models to play, but after that, for someone like me who has multiple armies from GW (collected years ago) I face a problem. Door #1 Add a few models to existing GW armies and play massive games. Door #1 A few dollars to beef up a GW army, door #2 alot of dollars… Read more »
… two door number ones!?!?!? Time to put my proof reading hat back on. Dammit! XD
have to say, epic decepticon/cobra pic there :p
They said they would try and keep the price down and make it as reasonable as possible. We shall see what that means… 🙂
I am concerned about what direction this will bring the game, but they did such a great job on battle engines and wrath in general I will trust PP to keep it balanced.
The video itself is a treat. You see the models that they have finished right away and get sneak peeks at all three others throughout the video. You get all kinds of insight from the developers on the model design, painting, history and lore, and rules design.
I agree with a few points raised here-
Nice looking models, I assume PP will do a good job on pts vs power level. I am concerned over cost and which direction this could take the game. I can see a back lash if they get it wrong- large, expensive and over powered would not be good. My first thought was- Bethmoth, Mulg, Avatar look a bit puny now vs these
Ya I can understand your sentiment. If its overpowered. . . but I hope PP takes that into consideration.
I’m sorry, I am going to need new trousers. Gorgeous. I don’t care if they’re daft, I like them. They’ll be expensive models but lovely ones.
Bigger games, ok. You don’t have to field everything, you could make up some witter about ‘testing grounds’ with two colossals together.
Oh, and I ruddy hope so because a mega troll would be damned funky monkey.
Wow, first of all I’m really surprised I’m not alone on my feelings on this one. I put up a Blog saying I like the mini’s and all that. But I’m worried about where PP are heading right now with their games. My thoughts if you’re interested:

I read your blog. I would have responded there but couldn’t log into your system. I can understand you are coming from on it and your concerns which is money in short. We only have so much of it. I have my MKII Primal, faction book and Domination books and I look forward to reading what is going to happen next. Three books in about 2 years. Not bad. But I pick and choose what I’m buying out of it. Like I’ve not bought my war wagon (or whatever it is called) for my army. That is about $60 or… Read more »
It’s not just the cost of individual miniatures. It’s potential fracturing of game systems that I’m worried about and what I and many see as a perceived ‘ramping up’ of the games size. Not just miniatures but the amount of points you play. You can’t tell me people who drop £60 on a couple of mini’s won’t want to get them on the table. Just a bit wary is all.
A miniature company has to expand. It can’t just keep shifting the same kind of thing, otherwise it starts to become stagnant. That doesn’t mean they should change anything or update the rules for no valid reason etc, but it does mean they have to create “new” things to sell. So long as its balanced, makes sense, and adds more fun/depth, then no problem. The only problem arises when you feel they are making new models JUST to sell then, and messing around a loved system, JUST to justify those models. All comes down to intelligence, basically. Storm of Magic,… Read more »
pfft srew colossals can you imagne what the Gatormen would get oO? *cough*GODZILLA*cough*
i have 4 children and i would gladly sell each and everyone of the little feckers for a khador colossal… and inregards to the appearance of the khador colossal it looks great. it fits right in with the khador mentallity (which is why should we spend out for a cortex for a little jack when it can go into a bigger one and why should we make it look all pretty its only there to destroy what ever is dumb enough to get in its way)
I’m gonna need a bigger bag…….
Now THIS is something I can sink my teeth into. I’ve always really dug the look of the various faction engines, but I never really wanted to use them in battle. But these things are exactly the sort of thing my son and I slobber over.
I can’t freakin’ wait!
Incidentally, PP has had rules for large, army level games for many months now. They are totally optional. I don’t believe they will ever shift the core of the game that way. Skirmish has been too successful a niche for them.
I agree with most sentiments on here concerning the direction PP is going in their games. Unbound is… well, to be frank, it’s kind of stupid. I have yet to see even the smallest unbound game finished. One of the awesome selling points of PP is that their games can be small and still an awesome good time… just look at Mangled Metal or Tooth and Claw. Unbound sapped the joy out of that for me and my gaming group. The battle engines are still so unused (able) to be considered never game altering, but these… well, we’ll see. The… Read more »
