I think the biggest problem with this movie is going to be two things. One. the fans. And Two. the budget. Nerd fans are notoriously hard to get on the good side of. And a lot of people will compare this to a THQ cut scene. The problem with that is that some of the time, I don’t know the figures involved but I could take a fair guess and say THQ’s cut scene will have a similar budget to this film. I said this film. That’s 3 minutes having the same budget as a film ofcorse the 3 minute… Read more »
A lot of guesswork in that post Calador and without seeing the film ….. 🙂
They had a budget of ‘some millions’ to do this apparently (According to a chat with the producer at GamesDay)
No animated feature could be produced (outside of some community effort) on bugets less than this.
About the good point about taking the ip to hollywood, all I’m going to say is Judge Dredd…
Exactly! 😉
there’s a new Dredd movie about to be shot you know – completely unrelated to the first one.
Cool I didn’t know that!
nice – didn’t know.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1343727/
the lead should be able to do a good job of dredd – but he MUST keep his helmet on…
I’m happy this isn’t like a game cutscene (who would charge a hill with a heavy bolter at the front or stand in the open and think it’s that easy to kill an Eldar Farseer). Plus why do people complain about marines looking light on their feet and fast? They SHOULD be. They wear POWER armour, not simple carapace plate. The armor makes them fast and strong enough to take on daemons and tyranids. Maybe one of the marines should have had their power pack shot and lumber around on his own strength so everyone can see the difference. Also… Read more »
The complaints weren’t about the marines moving themselves quickly but about the pyhsics of how a 1 tonne human juggernaught interacts with his surrounding. You expect a certain weightiness and gravitass to their movement, and you expect a satisfying thunk as they walk or run. Apparantly this isn’t the case in the film.
There will be a graphic novel about this film? Great! That’s what i’m looking forward to now 🙂
I think the reason they didn’t put a dreadnought in the film is because in an actual animated fight, they would look RIDICULOUS.
Clearly you haven’t seen the Dawn of War II intro…

looks pretty good to me.
Yep, I had seen that. And I still think it looks about as cool as E. Honda in Street Fighter. Which is to say… meh. Too bad that in game terms, you can’t have a normal dread with 2 close combat weapons. I wonder how it would have looked with a honking great autocannon on its right side. To each his own. 🙂
Um… Furioso has two CCWs
1. Hardly a “normal” dread.
2. Not Blood Angels in the video.
I hope they do something like a Horus Heresy series 😛
But as long as they have another movie with Orks… I’m happy.
on the note of comparison think Avatar: Last Airbender… i hated it … i loved the cartoon
I’ve been in the hobby for over 20 years now and space marines are what pulled me in. Since then I have always wondered how SM’s move and fight and how their armour and weapons work and sound. The myriad of computer games out have helped to illustrate these features and put the SM’s in context of the ‘real world’. The one thing I’ve always wanted to see was a movie with SM’s in, I’m not really bothered if it’s not state of the art graphics, I just want to see these bad boys in action. This has come along… Read more »
Given some of the similarities between tyranids, space marines and some other aspects of the universe, this movie might actually be closer to Starship Troopers (the book) than the 1997 movie was. Not that it’s hard, the similarities between the Starship Troopers book and movie are astonishingly few, but it’s interesting that a more or less unrelated movie and back story, should share so many similarities. Also i agree to some points in the original post. It’s very hard to please the fans, partly because they will point out any and all flaws but also because it’s hard to make… Read more »
Were you afraid to interview any of the females in the crowd? More importantly were there any female fans in attendance?
Was none 🙁
That implies that we are a dying breed…
lol, like the eldar or the high elves, ha ha
lookin forward to it dont care how good or bad it is been painting figures since airfix about thirty five years and always love cgi so spacemarine movie gotta be a must to see
It’s one of those weird things where pre-conceptions have a big bearing on how you receive it. In my experience the best comparison was seeing the Lord of the Riings movies as a fan of the books. It’s really easy to slip into hyper-criticism when comparing to what you’ve grown up with. The last thing you want is a movie to ruin your hobby. Having now seen it at the screening I can say I did slip into that mind-set a little, but I can say that Codex have kept true to the 40k universe – clearly the GW defence… Read more »
Did anyone else have trouble working out whether Lloyd liked the audio or not?
Yeah I though watching it back it might be hard to tell 🙂
One of my main concern, is that they keep it realistic with what can kill what. I mean one space marine squad cant kill a whole army, so I just hope they keep it true to the table top on how “powerful” a certain unit is.
nice one, the reactions are far more positive, even if you remove the fanboy filters, than I had honestly expected. This is good news indeed.
also, when you said “We own the hobby”, bang on…too bloody right we do 🙂
Watching this whole review made me feel soooooo much better about me pre-ordering this movie instantly when i was able to. The cgi always bugged me in the trailers but i am one of those guys who will watch anything and get super stuck into the story so i wasn’t to worried i mean i even loved that german 40k movie damantus or whatever its called you can watch it on youtube. I am glad its an independent movie since the story will be respected properly since its the most important thing. If a big American company took it, they… Read more »
I am pretty excited about this release. However, it could of been interesting if they got some non-40k fans (or non war-gaming fans in general) to see the movie and see their reactions, just in a mater of perspective.
One thing I didn’t get from the review was if it was gorey or not? I’ve always imagined that making a film version would have to have a lot of blood in it, considering they are using chainswords and mass-reactive explosive bolt shells. Can anyone who has seen the film give some comment on this? I’m still totally looking forward to it, and feel better about the graphics now I’ve watched your review. It would have been a disaster if they’d hollywoodised it and I’m glad they gave it to a brittish company. We all need to support this movie… Read more »
They did a review on the Space Wolves blog, I can’t remember for sure, but I think they addressed the gore factor. http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/2010/11/ultramarines-movie-review.html
Yeah, I just checked it, about 7mins 30s in, they talk about gore.
Cool. Sounds promising. Nice one man, cheers for that.
Greetings everyone, first off you guys did a great job with the review of this movie, I watched the whole thing. I have ordered it as of now, cause I want to see it and support the company that made it. Last thing does anyone know what the grey standing model with the scythe over Justin’s shoulder is and who makes it ? THANKS.
09.00 – Are those kids 15? Seriously?
I have just finished watching the Ultramarines movie on DVD, and yes the graphics are not Avatar but once you get swept up in the plot, and immersed in the world, it is all really good.
I agree it is a solid film where it counts, in the atmosphere, and an encouraging start for a small independent company.
It is a VAST universe and let hope there are some more epic films to follow!!
I liked some of the lines from the film, and thought they would make comically awesome ring tones…
Then I found out today you can download them here!

Ah, it’s a pity… turned out to be truly horrific. I have to ask though, those two who won the comp. What were they on? They must have been high… did the fluff justice indeed. It raped the fluff, mind-raped the audience and failed in the story department. Most of the movie is just panning shots of them walking and the story never drew me in- not even slightly. I spent the whole time fully aware that I was watching a fairly poorly made movie, which is sad. I went in with pretty low expectations, and it still disappointed me…… Read more »
I’m really looking forward to the Ultramarines Blu-ray release in June, finally!
