To Save or Not to Save? | Daily Tips

Darrell talks about whether or not saves in Warhammer 40k are optional or if you can choose to fail them. Humm that sounds wired but it might be useful.

Haven’t you done a video on this topic before?
There was a video on whether or not you could choose to take the worse of two saves available to a model.
frankly spoken, the save is a fact of physics represented in the game not only a game mechanic, so the question was really not that well thought about.
However, I have never understood the rule that prohibits firing into close combat.
there was a rule to do that in 2nd ed. I think and I really think it should be allowed again (maybe as well as the good old over-watch rule….)
I see what you’re saying about GW meaning for saves to always be taken, but if it says in the book you “may”, I’d say you can choose. It could represent a model giving up in the face of defeat.
My point is if it doesn’t say specifically that you “MUST” take a save, there will always be people who will argue the point if it will benefit them.
And that’s exactly why you never play with those people again. Once you start letting them get away with crap like that, then someone else will have the brilliant idea that you should be allowed to charge a unit and force close combat, but then not roll any attack dice. That way, they save their own units from being shot at for a whole turn until they decide to hit you in cc on your turn.
It was a nice try, but this is one game mechanic that can’t be cheesed around without ruining the game
Yea I agree that its one of those things we have all run into and just wish we could not make all of our attacks, or not make our saves and give up so we can shoot the heck out of the unit in question. But that is where the game gets its depth. U have to be able to judge when ur unit will die and plan around it. Again its how survieable a unit is not how much they are today because it helps out their buddies.
You should be able to shoot into melee then randomise the hits to see if you hit your own troops, IIRC correctly this rule was one of the sacrifices in the cause of making the game faster and IMO a mistake. If you have a vehicle being swarmed by infantry you should be able to hose them away with bolters/flamers etc with the odd chance that you may damage your vehicle with the occasional stray shot 🙂
Since non walker vehicles can’t be locked in combat feel free to hose away lol. I don’t think it would be that bad of an idea, I know there use to be a rule like this for the Evil side in LotR (not played in years so dunno if it still exists) and it worked okay then.
I think just a matter that you have to resolve with your opponent. If you suffered a lot of wounds and there is a high probability that your guys are not going to survive, sometimeas you can save some time by simply taking them off. I’ve played an apocalypse game where some Space Wolves terminators with Logan Grimnar were surrounded by by three full platoons of imperial guardsmen with some heavy weapons. The two opponents agreed that it’s better to simplt take the Space Wolves off, rather than wait for the imperial guard player to resolve all his rolls to… Read more »
If you are a marine with combat tactics, you can choose to automatically fail the moral test. In my opinion it is the best special rule marines have. The problem in this situation is you have to escape the sweeping advance from the genesteelers. Not easy. Otherwise you follow the no retreat rule and remain in combat if yu then make all your saves. If you do escape you have saved your unit and will be able to shoot the genesteelers.
It says “may” but it probably wasn’t ment to be optional. I mean its kind of obvious that an armor save is to determine if the models armor withstood the attack. If you want to fail an armor save intentionally you would have to not be wearing any armor before the attack. If you want to play like that then make a house rule where units can remove their armor and thus have no armor save but the unit has to declare this at the start of the game or whatever you want. It makes me laugh thinking about it… Read more »
