New Monsterous Creatures & Expansion for Warhammer
November 26, 2011 by brennon
Beastman and Orc & Goblin players in Warhammer could be very interested in the newest wave of monstrous beasts that are coming from Games Workshop in December. Check out the terrifying foes below...
Above is the Cygor/Ghorgon plastic kit which should be coming in around the size of the Giant one. A lot of detail and it seems like a lot of options too. Whether or not something this big would actually work in the newest edition is yet to be tested. My Dwarf gun line savours large targets!
Next is the Jabberslythe which I must say looks rather good as a model. Nice and original looking with some great character too it.
Also out in Finecast (look away now Darrell!) is the Mangler Squig, something every greenskin player has been wanting. And of course below that is the Doombull now rendered in the flexible stuff. A bit of a bugbear already has been that the Mangler Squig is coming in at £36 for a unit that costs 65 points!
Also on the horizon from Games Workshop is the campaign expansion Blood in the Badlands. With rules for setting a Mighty Empires campaign out in the wastelands and also bringing in mighty siege weapons is this a good step for the current game?
You can also check out a video of the December releases above, with 360 degree views of the models.
What do you make of the new models and of course this new expansion for Warhammer?

Some jaw-dropping models, as usual. Shame about the price of some of then. The Mangler squid doesn’t look like it’s worth the weight – you can get some idea of scale from the four gobln “crew”.
The Jabberslythe, I’d say, is worth the £40, it’s a fantastic piece of art, even if you don’t care about Warhammer.
Main thing levelled about the Mangler Squig is that something like their giant spider comes in around the same price and is Mahussive compared to it lol.
Well at least the Squig fits on its own friggin’ base…
Very true lol. I do like the model, but really not worth that cost. Would be better off just making your own.
I can’t believe that some people complain about the release schedule of other companies, yet GW have only just got round to releasing the Beastmen options. Just thought id chuck another GW hate rant 🙂
Hey, I complain about pretty much everything they do. (Such a sad cliche, this love / hate relationship thing.)
Man that music has me all worked up. I need to break out my cosplay batman suit and go chase the squirrels around my apartment complex. (They are vicious low life criminal squirrels and they deserve it!) Although the intro and outtake music makes me want to go buy a panflute and dance around a daisy patch. Cygor needs more skulls. More Skulls. Whats wrong with these GW sculptors. Dont they get that we all live for more skulls? Gosh dang those GW peeps. Their stuff is just too good. And as to cost? Come on its GW, aka Greed… Read more »
My friend is basically sticking a bunch of smaller squigs onto a large base lol. Just this massive horde of squigs all charging into the one unit 😉
I’m curious about the alternative conversions. Would you think it was cheesy if i filled a 60mm by 100m base with giant rats and proxied it for a Hell Pit Abomination?
Well unfortunately I would because it wouldn’t be big enough for my cannons to shoot it 😉
Thankfully with something like the Mangler Squig it has such a short life span anyway it probably won’t matter how you proxy it.
This concludes 2011 as Fantasy’s favored year. I admit I am actually kind of sad to see all this new stuff coming out for Fantasy since the game itself is even more demanding than 40k and yet so much less versatile. Am I the only one who thinks that Fantasy as a game system is worse in nearly every way than 40k? Just smashing 2 walled armies into each other over the course of several hours isn’t quite as fun as the breadth and creative breathing room that the 40k system allows. Paying more, working harder, and getting less out… Read more »
They don’t call it Charge Hammer for nothing. Regardless of the complexity, he who charges first, generally wins. But you can blame the technique on the limitations of medieval warfare. Lining up and bashing into each other was pretty much what they did until the US Civil war, and even then it was only about 2/3 of the way through that you started to see the beginning of Trench warfare. The advent of the rifled musket and the Mini Ball changed the game completely. I’ve always thought that if they got more creative with the “Fantasy” and didn’t stick so… Read more »
Charing has minimal effect in Warhammer now.. Why is it called Charge Hammer. I agree that the new rules are the best fantasy rules they produced (overall, but a lot of give and take) but the dumbest thing they did with 8th is have charging based on (I) rather than “if I charged first, I strike first) which makes charging in Warhammer pretty irrelevant. Even Lance weapons aren’t that great now that you can be killed before you strike, despite charging.
Allow me to correct myself. I have heard people at various times call the game Charge-Hammer (after 4th & 5th edition when it was called Hero Hammer), when they de-emphasized magic and put much more focus on maneuver and first charger. What you are pointing out is a correction made to 8th edition which, it appears, has negated the charge hammer effect. Up until 8, if you could out maneuver your opponent and get your charge off, just based on math and odds, if you had managed to match your line up appropriate to your enemies troops, the charger would… Read more »
Ah I see. I suppose the charging first before 8th was good ’cause those who died didn’t strike back (which was all they needed to correct… not the charging or random charging or M + 2D6).
Thanks for explaining this.
This is just my opinion but to me the newest edition of Warhammer is the best written set of rules for the game so far. Incredibly easy to read and learn, rich and deep while ironing out a lot of the kinks that were in previous iterations. Magic feels chaotic and random with just the right amount of insane power. Combat is brutal and full of rolling buckets of dice which is also great – and in terms of shooting, as a dwarf player it just become a whole lot more fun. In terms of creativity I think Warhammer is… Read more »
P.S – Also charging first now doesn’t mean your going to win. Thanks to initiative now taking precedence over simply ‘who charged’ it makes combat a lot more equal affair.
The only army where you could say Charge = Win is Ogres.
A lot of generalities here. What do you mean by versatile and creative breadth? Fantasy Battle is as much about magic, characters and artillery as it is about charging in 8th edition. (In fact, I would say it’s more about magic than charging.) With the new supp coming out, combined with Storm of Magic, there are at least as many if not more scenarios to play in FB as there are in 40K as well. There are also many more terrain types and terrain-based surprises in FB and I think the terrain models are more imaginitive than the 40K models as… Read more »
Heh, been a while for me for Fantasy. Might actually have to go out and buy the new rulebook. 🙂
Hey, while we are at it, Forge World just but up a wickedly creepy Ettin.

All I can say is it’s bloody about time! I always found it odd that the “beast”men army was the army with the fewest big beasts model wise. It was some what depressing as I’m a beastmen player. Well now I can rejoice a bit.
I am actually thinking of branching out into the braying gors and blood soaked weapons of the Beastmen – really love their angle and feeling in the Warhammer world. Have a pretty good idea of a paint scheme too, make them mountain dwelling Beastmen who live on the fringes of the Empire raiding small villages and towns. Basically its an excuse for me to use Romains fur painting guide and avoid painting everything brown! lol.
Those models are SICK! The new rules are good. Large army’s are fun if you know how to use them.
Cygor/Ghorgon and Jabberslythe least look intresting.
Ok, i like the look of the new kits. Great, let’s pop over to GW to see costs, more fluff, etc. Alrighty, I’m in their site, hit advance orders and….nothing. Nothing? ok I’ll check the main page again to see if I’ve missed anything. Ah ha! A blurb with Ghorgon…see more and click…nothing, back to same page.
GW sort it out you numpties – if you’re going to broadcast it to You tube at least have an ounce of sense to put it on yor website.
Rant over – may consider a ghorgon depending on cost
The models were all on the website last night but they’ve had technical issues according to FB and Twitter.
Siege games sound good – and the figures are not bad as I am still in my seat not standing up shouting “WOW – look at those, who need saving anyway”
From the eternally grumpy -where’s my new ruddy greater daemons? The finecast versions are the metal ones – which is fine if quality control were not so bad that you get the same ruddy torso in the box regardless.
GW produce beautiful models, can obviously run off big kits – why are they not updating the older sculpts? is it just to save money?
The Beastmen Cygor/Ghorgon kit look really neat. GW’s big monsters of late have been really nice. The Jabber-thingy looks just plain weird, which according the fluff the monster is supposed to be. But model doesn’t really feel like it’s something out of nightmares.
The rules supplement book looks promicing.
Ahh people complain about taking ages to release models, and maybe they should patch up existing codex entries before releasing expansions, but at least their breathing new life into the game.
I like the cygor kit and the jabberslythe is pretty imaginative, not so big on the mangler squig despite their comical nature. Squig’s price is awful too. The book looks decent, love that art of the dwarfs vs skaven on the front (from the rulebook amongst other places)
As traditional, Citadel cartoony monster sculpts from Aly/Trish.
Hopefully one day, the studio will hire some decent large scale monster sculptors.
the jabber-something-something looks awesome but the cybor and ghorgor….
kinda looks like a giant with a minotaur head ((why are they hairless?), I mean come on those are awesome mighty beast men and there giant monsters got bear bellies the size of my fist
(and bear bellies with aps yuck) they looks nothing like the fantastic artwork they got 🙁
Yes, from the art in the army book they are a bit of a disappointment but I got the impression from the Storm of magic images that they would end up being different. The Storm of magic pictures were pretty close to all the other models but they still had mouths in the Ghorgon’s torso. I guess that they had already put in plenty of options and that was a bit too far. I will probably convert mine though and give it a belly mouth and try to put someone in there, a bit like the top magler squig who… Read more »
The Jabberslythe is fantastic. I dont play Warhammer but might get one just to paint up. As for the £36 for the mangler squig? Epic fail.
Have to say I have the origional Ghorgon that Banebeast did and I much prefer it. It has Testicles for a start. You know that Ghorgon doesn’t need any red bull, he has all the taurine he’ll ever need. Like the Mangler squig, but I’m not going to pay £36 for a supped up fanatic, that’s going to get killed by shooting.
Love the Jabberslythe model, reminds me a little of a colossal beast of Nurgle. I might get one to convert into foulspawn (a Nurgle Daemon Prince)
@brennan
Apologies – only just noticed it. Typo: monstrous, not monsterous. Apols for being a pedant!
I personally think the models look great, the plastic Cygor/Ghorgon is my fav. As the to obligatory GW price discussion even the most expensive model model at £40 you can pick up from an independent supplier for less than £32 and £24 for a Doombull, so ain’t too bad
Which is a staggering comment. Yes yes I know, but when did such prices become acceptable? Looking at the reality, 1/5 is direct tax, plastic has soared in price thanks to the cost of fuel (tax), corporation tax has dropped fractionally, but the green costs have also increased hugely (which raises questions about precisely what material finecast is) so let’s assume half the cost is simply tax. There’s a lot of money spent on keeping stores open, ground rents and paying staff salaries so perhaps it’s not so bad. But then, if on line retailers can sell at 22% off… Read more »
You used to be able to buy sprues from them – guess they thought it wasn’t profitable, but alas.
I remember buying one or two sprues of a kit to make up Mordheim warbands lol.
You make a good point. I do think GW make some bad decisions such as selling cannon-fodder soldiers for a high price, but I don’t mind them being “greedy” provided they aren’t stupid about it. Which is why I’m happy to see these new Army Box sets you see on pre-order, which save you about £70 a pop (I can’t believe it myself… ) But we don’t think about how shitty it is for GW to do business in the UK, being bashed on the head with every other tax. GW is not a very profitable company from what I’ve… Read more »
Some might say that they have seriously misjudged the elasticity of demand for their product? I know that if their overall cost per army was cheaper, I would collect more armies. They have chosen to go with boutique item price structures rather than high volume price structures. Perhaps that’s the model that the market demands. Another argument for recent sales declines is the current dearth of entertainment options with regard to fantasy and sci fi gaming, wich require far less of a time commitment (no painting, no gluing, no rule books to memorize, just click the mouse and go!) GW… Read more »
Still, I like that Gorgon thinggy, mainly because my Tchar army needs a giant (not for competition, but for fun) and I think this one fits better than the normal giant, I mean: 4 arms!
This could fit in perfectly with some conversion work.
Seems to be a GW trend in regards to anything SQUIGY – hoppers, herds and now the manglers……..the fluff for them is brilliant, however the price as always means no purchase’s for me.
