Avatars of War’s New Herald of Pestilence
November 22, 2011 by dracs
Avatars of War have previewed the next hero figure to be making its way to the fantasy battlefield, the Herald of Pestilence!
This disgusting hero will be perfect for leading armies of Nurgle daemons into battle, or for that matter any other disease ridden fantasy armies you might indulge in.
What do you all think of this latest sculpt? Do you think its shaping up well?

Most times AW has fine minis, but this one just falls short of the standerd they tend to go by. I as well as most of you have seen other companies make rotting deamons of some sort much better.
Whilst not stunning compared to other models in the AW range, its deffo better than alot of the Nurgle / rotting style minis out there. I would deffo get this if i was doing a Nurgle Chaos Daemon army. As it is, im doing a Nurgle Death Guard CSM army so i cant really see a use for it. If only AW would start a Sci-Fi range! I would LOVE to see that.
Yes… Well, the Nurgle demons are quite good nonetheless. This one is more pustule-y and less maggot-y, it’s a style that I like… As well as the circular mouth.
Looking at the back photo, there’s a small puddle of sludge at the base. Perhaps a nice earthy brown can be added to the traditional green Nurgle palette?
That’s disgusting! If that came at me in a battle I’d fail my LD test and leg it.
Yeah. I just don’t get Nurgle appeal. I can’t ever really add any good comments to Nurgle sculpts cause I think I am blocked on the whole appeal of rot and disease. Vomit, puss, putrid blood, and feces just doesn’t spark my imagination, but to each there own.
Genetics/evolution just playing a part in how we look at things. We have an aversion to these things for a reason. But yeah, I don’t get it, there are some who REALLY love Nurgle.
You know, it’s all very relative… I know a guy who, while he wouldn’t field a Nurgle army because it’s not his “thing”, wouldn’t puke over one and would evne joke about it… But he’s inexplicably quite frightened of skeletons and skulls, and the thought of painting or fielding necrons or tomb kings and such… Well, he just shivers. I’m not sure (he hasn’t played in years and won’t play that game again, in all probability) but I think he would fight a skeletal army with more passion, due to this very reason. So… I don’t know. To each his… Read more »
Aversion and phobia is experienced at the individual level, but is not truly relative, but, as you say further on, stems from some sort of cultural, historical, or biological bias. Funny story about your friend and his necrophobia. I think a ‘cultural taboo’ would be the the last aversion you mentioned. The iron cross, used throughout the Marine iconography, for some people is really offensive. But I think the other aversions are really biological. We avoid that stuff because in real life exposure to it can be lethal. Of course some people embrace the macabre because of its sensationalist quality,… Read more »
It’s the fluff that make Nurgle great, for me. The models are sometimes truly repulsive, but I dig that whilst the other powers are kind of standard bad guys – rage, lust, schemes – Nurgle’s legions go past just being a disease vector to have a deeply messed up family vibe going on. It’s kind of sweet, which makes it even more horrifying.
AAhhhh, The Joy of Nurgle 🙂 the gleeful embracing of uncleanliness.
The charming perversion that is ‘Grandfather Nurgle’ an embodiment of physical suffering and death that spawns and nurtures in filth, pestilence and decay. Its all kinds of utter wrongness.
Painting too, focusing on capturing the essence of rot and putridity for hours…days…weeks.. has to have a therapeutic effect on the mind. or something…
Gotta love it, through gaming we befriend our monsters and thus assimilate a little cosmic terror along the way 😉
I’m all for anything that introduces a little variety into GW’s limited, all-metal Nurgle range, but this guy looks a bit plain for a centrepiece model to me. That lamprey mouth is suitably hideous and daemonic though, good work there.
