Painted Vermin Lord from Avatars of War
October 2, 2011 by beerogre
We covered this model last month, but now the Vermin Lord from Avatars of War has received a coat of paint from the master himself... Ángel Giráldez.
For anyone interested here's a link to him with no paint.

great paint job but not there best mini, i just cant seem to take it seriously
Yeah, it’s the muzzle and the short legs, compared to the arms… A bit cartoony.

That berserker head looks mighty pink and healthy for a dead’un…could be fresh, could be a painting composition error.
In terms of technique though, there is, as ever with Angel, no error.
Hmm style wise the head would fit in with the look of the older ‘gnoll’ faced skaven (which I dislike) but it really does not fit in with the true vermin faced new releases. The new GW skaven are fantastic models and the heroes are pretty much the same price as AoW.
Fantastic paintjob though!
The thing I notice is that this fellow is beefier than a WHFB would make it. Thats OK in my view.
i rather like this mini, looks a lot more powerful than GW’s skaven warlords.
shall most definatly be adding one to my verminous horde.
I’m getting really bored with these companies offering “Counts as” options to GW rather idiotic and limited range. Don’t they realise that building on a limited concept only serves to continue the drudgery and market clasp GW has on the Tabletop gaming community.
I know that producing something “new” has it’s risks, and is probably more likely than not, prone to failure, but if these companies are not willing to go at it on their own and creat something innovative then I say stay out of the kitchen.
Good point. AoW have some very talented artists, seems a bit of a waste to have them make GW knock-offs. I’ve always respected Reaper cause they just make a wide range of minis for any occasion. Sometimes they just go off on tangents and make whatever. AoW metals are nice, but they are priced the same as GW and often seem highly derivative. This model does not offer a Skaven player something that makes his/her army interesting or different…and with the prices being largely equal…I’m not seeing any incentive for a GW player to go out and buy it. Maybe… Read more »
That they look very GWish is not a great surprise since we are talking a about an Ex-GW scuplture
But there are a lot of people – the vast majority actually last time I checked, when it comes to fantasy – who play and love Warhammer. Why can’t they have a choice of other models from other companies to use in existing armies? I have every GW Warrior Priest they ever made, I love them, but I’m also happy to have the Avatars of War versions. The costs are high because they are metal sure, but I don’t mind giving them a bit of my cash now and then, they deserve it.
Snout makes it look more canine than rodent, at least in my eyes.
It looks a bit too chubby for me. The black nose looks stupid (rats have pink noses). I think other companies doing characters for Warhammer is ok, especially for older armies that haven’t had any new models for ages. But Skaven are one of the best serviced amies in WHF with many new Warlord figures, there’s the Island of Blood one the metal Island of Blood character, the Games Day figure and then there’s Queek Headtaker himself. Added to that are the many plastic clanrats and stormvermin to convert your own warlord. So I think the skaven market is over… Read more »
This is just too cartoony to my taste.
It is not the best work around on AOW, but still it is a nice mini.
AOW started of with felix moving back to spain after he worked at GW where he make (some dwarf sculpts) , so it is not strange the look GW, and my take on then the look even better than GW, i have all the dwarfs incl all slayer models and just love them.
and AOW started to develop there own game “Arena Deatmatch” , so they take risks , for a young company there on the right track.

Biffo has gone feral since being booted off the front page of the Beano
Just hope Korky the Kat has fared better
This giant talking, walking rat who has opposable thumbs is a bit too cartoony for me.
Looks good to me. I don’t have a problem with it and I like the stance.
I shall file this under- woefully awful
