Chaos in a METAL BOX!! Chaos Dreadnought
September 7, 2010 by johnlyons
So guys, John has a look at the ageing Chaos Dreadnought kit just to see how far the model design has come. This is a full metal kit and although some people still like this model, many of us would rather convert the plastic kits or even go Forge World! So lets just see what John has to say on the matter.

Looking at stores linkies notice that the full price is listed as £35.
That seems a lot of pennies for what John got out of that box.
Liked some of the styling actually and thought it had some nice details, but It looks like GW have had their money’s worth out of those moulds.
Maybe it is time for a new one.
GW needs too make a newer model of this. pls GW
Wow, this brings back memories of working at GW during the heyday of 3rd edition, and making two of these for my Iron Warriors army. Too bad nothing changed with the Eye of Terror campaign, though.
This model need a serios remake! i think its the worst Model in the GW Range… i dont see any point in buying this when a SM Dread is something about 10 euro cheaper and is really fun and insipiring to convert…
Of course it needs a revamp, the model will be legally able to drink alcohol next year…
Honestly I had forgot the model existed, 17 years old models are not good to any range.
£35!!!!! forge world is even cheaper lol its about £25 for the body and £8 for wepons lol
After seeing what GW did for the plastic Chaos Demon Prince kit I don’t see why they can’t do the same for the Chaos Dreadnought. No disrespect to the old model, but I think it’s outdated sculpt makes it look out of place in any CSM army. HOP TO IT GW! 🙂
im really surprised it wasnt re-vamped when the first SM plastic dread’s were released, i meen they did it with the Land raiders and Rhino Varriant tanks, why not the dread. perhaps because of the forgeworld chaos dreads? even with them being awsome models im surprised there isnt a standard GW version.
This model is so old no that the bits to fit together anymore, i had to and i had to rebuild most them with greenstuff as the bog standard model parts just wouldn’t fit. Seriously GW really really really need to update this model. Also £35 errr no i don’t think so, not for this.
PS john those gimmicks as you called them are the smoke launchers that go on top of the sacrophgus, on top parts of the armor plating
@johnlyons: The autocannon is a twin-linked autocannon. And the fiddly parts are the old assault launchers, smoke launchers now-a-days.
I must admit I’m still amazed that it’s one of the few 2nd ed models that still hasn’t been redone I mean the special characters fine them I can understand but this guy is the only metal dreadnought (I think) and one of the few metal vehicles still around and really does need to be updated I mean it’s still got the power scourge which isn’t used anymore by chaos though they have gotten rid of the thunder hammer and TL Heavy Bolter that was originally with it.
I always felt the thunderhammer was the nicest of the 3 combat weapons this old dread came with. Shame to see it’s gone yet that rediculous wee claw thing is still there. I do rather like the power scourge, but maybe it would be better mounted on a slightly longer arm section.
Some of the parts are really nice but even by GW standards this model seems really poor in terms of cast quality and the price they are charging for it is nothing short of rediculous.
I have one of the metal venerable space marine dreadnaughts and even its casting was poor. Lots of gap filling and sanding to make it look presentable enough. So I cant imagine what the moulds would be like for this model. Does need a revamp. cant Believe it was 93 this came out.
OMG does the kit not come with the thunderhammer anymore? i specifically got one of these off Ebay with the thunder hammer arm to use as my 2nd Ironclad ( i don’t play chaos, i use it as a pre-heresy dreadnought). i understand why people like the modern plastics better than the metal, but i’m glad i got this model. the thunderhammer seems more a ‘seismic hammer’ than the arm that comes with the plastic ironclad kit
Other fun comparisons to make price wise…Assault on Black Reach from a site offering 20-25% discount comes in at just £10ish more than this model, gives you a plastic dread to start convertion AND the rest of the contense of the box to use for parts or sell/trade.
IIRC correctly it didn’t go together very well when the moulds were fresh …. definate revamp required but please don’t just add spikes and a “grisly trophy rack” to the current SM dread – just because it’s chaotic doesn’t mean it has to be covered in spikes 🙂
I don’t play 40K personally (But I plan to get some chaos) But personally wouldn’t buy this model. If they would allow me to use it at my local games workshop store I would get a regular space marine dreadnaught, and a tanks accesory pack, use a bunch of other chaos stuff an then I think it would be a pretty good conversion 🙂
i don’t see why they wouldn’t allow this, basic conversions like that are life blood that makes things interesting.
i imagine the next time Codex:CSM rolls around for an update the only things in the current range that will be prioritised for update will be the Dreadnought, Predator (to give it the updated sturdy sponsons that won’t break if you so much as breath on them like the current ones) and I’d guess for Space Wolves/DeathCompany style cult plastics. Along perhaps with Raptors.
I don’t see Oblitorators being a priority to get into plastic as Cult troops and a new Dreadnought would sell a lot better than them in plastic.
Forge World ‘dreads are the way to go! I have my eye on the fancy Alpha Legion one they have.
you are over roeacting it is prity cool
On the one hand I certainly think the Chaos Dread needs a little love. There’s no reason they can’t do a kit dedicated to the ruinous powers with as many options to customize it as they put into the SM-Venerable revamp. On the other hand, I’ve worked on a few of these; converting them is a pain, but it’s all the more rewarding for it. My basic go-to for converting them is to chop the legs above and below the knee and make them taller. When the bulky old metal guy stands a few cm taller than the new clean… Read more »
Khorne will crush the one who dosn’t give this a NEW model!
why did the government in the uk raise VAT? now i have to save up more to buy stuff for my chaos army, and like the chaos dreadnought couldn’t get any more over priced >:(
