Talisman Will Return As Games Workshop Take The Reins
February 20, 2017 by brennon
Talisman is going to be returning to the tabletop in some form or another now that Games Workshop has taken control of it after the split with Fantasy Flight Games was announced last year.
This game is quite the staple of many a board gamers collection and while its roll-and-move mechanics are rather archaic now, leading to quite the marathon, it has so much added content in it now it's almost like a collectors dream in its own right.
It will be interesting to see how Games Workshop deals with a new version of the game. For now, you still have Nomad Games' digital incarnation of Talisman which is getting an update soon.
You can find out more about this in the update from the Warhammer Community website but it will take you on a new journey to the Firelands which sounds marvellous and perilous at the same time!
What do you think the future of Talisman holds?

As I said in the forums, Talisman was my gateway drug from RPGs to tabletop wargaming back in *cough* *mumbles* the mid 80s. As such it holds a really special place in my gaming heart. I just hope that GW makes minis for the adventurers standard in this iteration, and I can’t see why they wouldn’t. it will be a definite purchase if only for nostalgia.
Considering how extensive the AoS range is, would think minis are a no brainer for them to do; sculpt a batch of new ones for the core game and one or two for each expansion and then use WD to print rules for ‘new’ characters which use the existing range (which unless I’m mistaken is what they’re doing with Heroquest isn’t it?)
If they did do that it’d actually be a great way of marketing new minis – buy the new mini and this months WD and get the rules for it for not one, not two, but *three* systems (maybe even four if the split with FFG means GW will also be taking control of the RPG systems).
I don’t think they will do miniatures, not from the AoS range. I think if they do miniatures they have to stick to single piece miniatures, not kits. Talisman is not a miniatures game and I think GW need to make sure that their version plays to the games strengths and to the audience for which it was intended (board gamers).
I wasn’t thinking necessarily turning it into a minis game but rather use it as an extra selling point for new miniatures; basically they do single piece sculpts for the core game and expansions, but when a new hero is made for AoS, in that month’s WD include Warhammer Quest and Talisman rules for that mini as a way of drawing AoS players into Talisman (and as a way of enticing Talisman players who are also mini wargsmets to buy a mini they normally wouldn’t). They would be optional add ons for those who own the minis not a manditory… Read more »
Speaking of the computer game version, considering there’s a HH variant you can also buy as a computer game/app, wonder if GW will make a physical copy of that too at some point. Although if they did, I expect there’d be some changes to it if it used minis considering in the app version you can play as Primarchs and other big name 30k characters.
Well least one game is here to stay after FFG lost rights. Too bad that Conquest can’t since it’s LCG as those are pretty much FFG’s thing.
Returned? It hasnt gone anywhere 🙂
Still available right not from Ffg for less than £40
I have the FFG version with several expansions. Why buy a GW version that will likely be very similar?
Indeed, you’ll have no real reason to, but I imagine that the GW figures will be a lot better than those produced by FFG.
I’ll see what they come up with and go from there, it’s always been a game I’ve enjoyed even if the core mechanics clearly rub some people up the wrong way.
‘Better’ is a relative term. There really haven’t been that many recent GW models that are better than others on the market, in my opinion. Technically impressive, beyond a doubt, but usually not visually appealing. I’m obviously not a fan of the aesthetic and others mileage may vary, but I’m not convinced a GW edition will be any better than FFGs offering!
