Explore The Golden Age Of Piracy In The British Vs Pirates Kickstarter
February 8, 2017 by deltagamegirl22
While having a look around Kickstarter, I found myself another must have pirate game! British Vs Pirates, by Apollo Randall, is a miniature ship combat game set in the golden age of piracy.
Knowing full well that they had me at theme alone, I was absolutely enamoured with the beautiful look of the game. The art direction is lovely and the colours just pop - and there's ship minis!
British vs Pirates is a strategic board game where two to six players take on the roles of captains on the high seas trying to claim victory for their allegiance. The primary influence of the game is the wind, as represented by the wind vane. Players will play ships that correspond to their allegiance and captains for each vessel.
Both ship and captain will offer interesting buffs for players and feature different influence according to the direction of the wind- specifically relative to the distance the vessel can move. This becomes especially important as you are trying to maneuver yourself into firing position at your enemy (or in need of getting out of harm's way yourself!).
There's also a control deck of cards for each side, that feature four different types of cards that are colour coded based upon the type of stat they effect.
You might have a card that offers you additional movement, or perhaps it's additional firepower, or perhaps you can change the direction of the wind (which can really goof things up for your enemy!).
Will you be taking to the high seas on behalf of the British or the Pirates?

Looking great, have to take a look at the Kickstarter. .. is it a boardgame or a full on wargame?
Hex based … I might just be sold
@Rasmus, yes hex, yes wargame, I think. That is debatable but there are “units” and different classes as well as Captain cards and Skill Cards. I hope you like it thanks for the compliment my good man.
It is a miniatures board game.
@britishvspirates Backed and in! Looks like a fun game. I’ve always loved the Sid Miers ‘Pirates’ games since the Commodore 64 days and this really reminds me of it.
I see the Spanish are coming, any plans for any other units? Merchant vessels, Indian war canoes etc.
@Hazyboy75, First thank you for your support it means a lot to me. Second, whooow that is a new one. War canoes… Yes the Monarch of Spain is lurking on the horizon and there be rumors of a new faction brewing beyond that. Buccaneers. The ladder of course is for the next kickstarter but yes this game is well and truly sand box style where new factions and new ship/captain cards from existing factions can be added. They will play differently, feel different and have really great art. Again thank you for the support. Check out our comment section on… Read more »
