Take A Better Look At Roboute & Company For Warhammer 40,000
February 5, 2017 by brennon
Over on the Warhammer Community website, the folks at Games Workshop have given us a better look at not only Roboute Guilliman but also his comrades (or at least loose associates) joining him as part of the new Gathering Storm box for Warhammer 40,000.
Leading the way is, of course, Guilliman himself who comes sporting his updated armour (for better or worse) and that flaming sword. The sword itself is actually one of those wielded by the Emperor and his armour was gifted to him by Belisarius Cawl.
If you're not a fan of his face you can always give him a helmet is you prefer. I have to say I think I prefer the version of this model where they've converted him into The Emperor. It's online somewhere and I would say you go dig it out. It might work better than using him as Roboute Guilliman!
Following him, we have the rather secretive looking Cypher who is possibly the best model from the set.
He wears armour which has been through a number of different iterations as he has had to build on it himself. He's still quite the gunslinger but is also sporting the Lion Sword on his back. Whether or not he is going to give it back to the Primarch of the Dark Angels or stab someone else with it is yet to be decided.
Last but not least we have Grand Master Voldus.
It seems like the Grey Knights are going to have a lot of work to do supporting Roboute as he sets about working out just how he is going to deal with the Imperium now it's gone through a drastic change. I do like the model but it is a shame we don't have the wild Kaldor Draigo here instead.
Now you've had a closer look at the models; what do you think?

Looking epic!
Not sold on rowboat girlyman … but I really want to be 🙂
Maybe it’s because the forgeworld model is stupidly epic, maybe it’s cause he looks like a michael bay transformer.
Very torn, but definitely intertsting times for 40k.
The Primarch is very disappointing. Cypher looks good and the Grey Knight is decent too.
I really like the look of the Gulliman model, he really looks like he’s mid battle stood atop that broken aquilla the the emperors flaming sword on the go. Yes hes a little ornate but he is the leader of the ultrasmurfs afterall. The cypher model is what really grabs my attention though. He looks absolutely awesome, love the sculpt on him. Cant wait to see whats going to happen over the coming months. Will it finally come to light that he’s been loyal the whole time, i certainly hope so. Especially hope that the lion and the inner circle… Read more »
I really like the other two, but Gulliman is disappointing. The Forgeworld model is so much better.
Other two are good looking models but Roboute is rather disappointing compared to his FW version.
I actual prefer this to the FW version, although I’d have to use the helmeted version, as the face is bloody awful.
I prefer the Forge World version but I think this one is much better as a game piece. The Forge World model is very regal and is more of a vignette. This is a Primarch in the full flow of battle.
I would like to know how big he is compared to the FW Primarchs
The Primarch model is fantastic, although I think I prefer the helmeted version to the other one. I hope they do some of the other primarchs in a similar fashion, even though it is taking the setting away from the tone / direction I’d like them to take. Cypher looks amazing too. Now we can see the details he looks like a really interesting model. The Grey Knight looks like technically a very nice model, although also nothing particularly special. He looks like he could be a generic GK leader model. I don’t feel there’s anything that makes him stand… Read more »
I love the Cypher model, if only I could buy it separately from the other two.
I honestly don’t get why people hate the Gulliman model so much, he is exactly what the Primarchs would be ostentatious, to the endth degree. I really like the Cypher model and how they painted him up in the black it is done really well with those soft lines. I think painting these up will be a huge amount of fun 😀
When I view the thumbnail of the model on my ipad it looks pretty good. However on a larger screen I really dont like it. I think the reason is that the detailing on his armour doesnt work for me, I actually think the pose is ok and the overall style is quite nice, its definitely the styling of the armour Im not a fan of
So I took a look at the forge world sculpt which a lot of people have been comparing to and I think it is pretty hard for mass produced hard plastic (I wish I could remember it’s proper name I have worked with it in factories) it will always be worse. I think the pose is just a classic power pose. If it were Conan you could see a girl on each leg sort of thing, very reminiscent of that kind of pulp action pose. Is it the curls in the filigree which doesn’t come in roman style designs if… Read more »
Its a fussy sculpt and oddly proportioned. The enormous power fist makes the right arm look skinny. The chest huge is making he legs look thin. The bare head isn’t great, the helmet is better but looks a bit small (again massive chest).
Mostly though, he is absolutely huge. Sure make him bigger than a regular marine but this is ‘a bit much’.
I think the being huge is pretty much part of GW design philosophy bigger is better, and I think their goal is instant visual recognition, zero confusion sorta thing.
But yeah with the powerfist, isn’t that more just a powerfist problem, I am not a big fan of them, honestly I don’t get them too much would some sort of mechanical claw give a better idea of that ha ha. Or do you think it is this one in particular.
I think being huge is less about aesthetics and more about flogging expensive kits to be honest!
I know powerfists are giant hands, but there is something that looks off to me here. Maybe the massive sword isnt helping?
I do not hate him i just think he is ok, not bad but not great either, i don’t like the leg pose and i much prefer the FW armour over this one, it’s just personal taste i guess. So for me an Ultramarine player the most interesting/awesome looking model in this box is Cypher and that’s a little bit sad.
I think the pose is trying mimic old pulp magazines.
I actually really like Cypher but I am old fallen angel lover so, take that as you will ha ha
But yeah I get if this your team you want something a more than was in the style of your team and less generic, I am guessing?
I wouldn’t call him generic it’s just some thing i don’t like, as said the pose, then the cable dangling between his legs (wa cloths or the thing his FW counterpart has would be better) and the power fist/fingers somehow look wierd on that picture, and the bolter underneath also looks strange combined with the fist and what ist that pipe thing doing on the bolter? For me the armour itself isn’t bad it certainly looks very detailed and niece but i just prefer the aesthetics of the FW armour and the FW Roboute looks a little bit more roman… Read more »
Yeah when I was talking about more generic I was talking about how he is less Roman, more space marine, not less detailed. I just thought those were his rosaries.
As for price I would say there is one of two options his going to be inline with other ones we have seen or … unhappily expensive.
But yeah, you as Ultramarine fan, not like the design making it more ‘super marine’ rather than Ultramarine I can get how I would not be impressed by that.
Astonishing pieces of work, and plastic too ! 😮
Centrepieces indeed!
YOU CHOSE WISELY gw
Cypher is great, one of the best character models for marines released for a long time, not a big fan of the others. For me personally, you have seen one grey knight you have seen them all, I just never got into the fluff and have no interest, face is well done though. Robert is just off, the proportions are all wrong, shrunken headed look just doesn’t work for me. I think the forgeworld one is much better in that regard, although no where near as exciting a pose or anything. Shame really, and it does look better with the… Read more »
Don’t like Cypher’s shoulder plates, the rest of him is okay-ish.
Love Guilliman, especially the bare head.
Of all the Triumvirates this would be the one I’d buy.
good figures Guiliman looks great if a bit lord flashharty with the big codpiece look
He has such a small head!
To me the armor is way to busy. It looks like it would belong to fulgrim more than Guilliman. I honestly prefer the simpler, more utilitarian design of the Forgeworld model. It feels like that fits a man of Guillimans’ personality and stature.
Looks like the return of Pinhead the Barbarian…
They got Cypher just right.
Is it just me, or is Guillimans armour just screaming chaos? Seriously looks like its the exact same style of trim thats on the chaos marines such as the raptors or the new thousand sons models
Thats what I was thinking.
As I have said before, I like all three models (Cypher especially), and I personally think that Guilliman’s proportions look odd principally because of the angle the photographs have been taken at. I will wait until the 360 degree rotations are released, or I can get a look at the model ‘in the plastic’ (so to speak), before I pass any final judgement, but I doubt that gross proportion errors will have been made in one of the most important models GW have ever released. As for his overall build, that is probably deliberate. We already know that Guilliman had… Read more »
Following on from the weekender I have been wondering about the un-helmeted head. I don’t think it’s the sculpt that is the problem I think it’s either the photos or the painting. The skin is quite pale but he looks like he’s wearing rouge on his cheeks. The hair also doesn’t contrast enough with the skin. I don’t actually think that the face looks badly defined, it just has a weird colour palette
