Tau Sky Ray Seeker Missiles, Daily Tips.

Darrell has a look at the Tau Sky Ray Missile Defence Gunship and in particular what the seeker missiles do. It can carry six of them but can it fire all of them in one turn? Check out Darrells thoughts on this Daily Tips.

1 st comment 🙂
the pay off of using seekers, after the costs of the skyray AND the pathfinders and setting them all up in the right places on the battlefield is not enough. They are not hard hitting enough… Hammerhead is a much more flexible tool, with solid shot rail gun rounds or submunition AND they can still use the markerlights from the pathfinders. Plus the hammerhead looks pretty too…
I agree, with standard BS3 it takes 6 rounds (expected) for the skyray just to get off its own missiles. Pathfinders I think are a must. Even with that the skyray cannot take out heavy armour so more points need to be allocated for that. This to me says it is constricted to higher point games.
“…Knows a lot about Tau, especially how to remove dead models…”
Harsh. (But true :P)
close combat with tau is never close…
it’s usually will enough survive to run away 🙁
“Have I got that right? Should I ask that any longer?” LOL, prime BoW T-shirt quote there.
Yeah, Tau Seeker Missiles aren’t really that good. I’ll admit Skimmer Tanks are handy, but that’s about it.
A better t-shirt would be the quote from the LS tactica thread where he admits making a mistake 😉
I’ve been leafing through the Tau codex lately since so many players seem to have appeared at my FLGS and I really don’t see the point of these things. You essentially get 6 hunter-killer missles, sure you may not need LOS from the vehicle but you still need a markerlight in range. Why anyone chooses these over Hammerheads of Broadsides I don’t know.
never played vs a skyray before. i can’t find fault in darrells logic or interpretation of the rules. it looks as if all six missiles can be fired in one turn if enough markerlights are used.
good vid today darrell
First of all, Homer Simpson could not design that. Second, Dark Eldar vehicles are the worst looking vehicles in the game. They look like the desert speeders Jaba the Hut used in Star Wars except worse. (I really hope they make those better with the new Dark Eldar). Third, I’ve played against Sky Rays and they never seem to do much. The disable a vehicle or two in some way but the amount of marker lights you have to fire to make them effective is ridiculous. I really don’t think they are worth it. Hammer heads are much better. I… Read more »
I thought the same thing when I saw the Dark Eldar skimmers!
I would much rather have unlimited Railgun shots than 6 seeker missiles so I’ve never even used one plus to make it effective I would have to buy Pathfinders and I honestly have never found myself wanting more seeker missiles than the two that come with my Pathfinder’s Devilfish
I still demand the sexy female assistant !
But then they would need to rename themselves to “Beauty and the Beasts of War”.
lol
Very true but at least their would be something better looking then darrel 😉 no offence m8 😉 but you ent my type! and would be nice to see more female wargamers around rather then… a sausage fest…. *shivers*
If they’ve got infinate range, does this mean if there’s a table nearby with another Tau army playing in a different game, and they have a marker thingy, that you can fire onto that table, too?
yes
yeah that would be funny.
I agree I wouldn’t ever bother taking one. 6 Missiles aren’t enough at all. It would ONLY make sense if it was an unlimited number.
HAHA… Best Darrell video to date.
yup
Nice one Darrell
Too busy laughing to learn about Tau missiles.
What was that about marker pens? 😛
Considering I picked up a nice sized used Tau army for about a $100 bucks a couple months ago I’ve been looking into different parts of the army. There was a nice little discussion in the Tau Empire group here on the site about Sky Rays… and basically yeah, the consensus is “not worth it”. All it needs is a rethink on it’s functionality and where it fits in the army. With a few basic rule tweaks I’d bet you we’d see more of them on the field. Some ideas are: new/upgraded versions of marker lights… longer range perhaps. new… Read more »
In answer to the question, yes, you can use all of the missiles in a single turn if you have enough marker lights. That’s one of the reasons that pathfinders can take them 😀
Regarding it’s use: not in the question, but it probably isn’t as useful as it could be 😉
My only disagreement is that I think the Sky Ray looks very cool, better than any Chaos (Clearly spiky things don’t appeal to me.)
Otherwise there is no need for a Sky Ray – just add seekers to your other vehicles.
BTW – with all the weapons gleefully on display – why can it not carry troops? – It would have been good support for pathfinders if it could move and shoot.
i recommend just slapping two seeker missiles onto piranhas or some other vehicle it is cheaper and more effective because they can support the main army even if they are out of range (as s the case in some of my groups scenarios) and it is hella funner
