The Legions Of Magnus The Red Revealed By Games Workshop
November 19, 2016 by brennon
Following on from the reveal trailer of Magnus The Red declaring his intentions over Fenris we got to see a first look at what's coming for Warhammer 40,000...from Games Workshop themselves!
Leading the way we got to take a look at the Rubic Space Marines which are looking superb. The Thousand Sons have always been a rather evocative looking force to use on the tabletop, especially since they don't tend to be overly mutated either which is nice to see amongst Chaos Space Marines.
Following on from them we have some of the more expendable forces of Tzeentch ready to serve their master. Stepping out of Silver Tower we have some Tzaangors!
Being one of the star models of the Silver Tower box it's good to see them branching out into Sci-Fi.
The Thousand Sons also need some stalwart warriors to hold the front line and that is where their Terminators come in...
It's a nice use of the older style designs of the Terminators, giving them a more ancient feel. I particularly like the Sorcerer leader on the left there with the staff held at the ready. I might end up having to side with the forces of Tzeentch when these get released.
Talking of Sorcerers, we're going to get a whole bunch of them it seems!
Well...wow. Some folks might say they are looking too busy but I think each of these just looks spectacular. The one at the front might look a bit goofy but the one on the left for example simply kicks ass!
Looking Ahead
As well as these official looks ahead we have a few sneakier looks from elsewhere on the interwebs. Here we have, of course, the masterful Ahriman, ready to enact his revenge.
...and as we've already seen him, the Demon Prince Magnus The Red lords over all and makes the very foundations of Fenris quake.
All of this is centered around the announcement of War Zone Fenris and, as this book cover suggests, Wrath Of Magnus...
Some might say that the Thousand Sons are quite right to be angry with their Space Marine brothers and that some revenge is deserved for what the Space Wolves did to their world. Maybe turning to Chaos wasn't the best choice however.
Either way, it's going to be a titanic clash and maybe we'll see a major change in the landscape of the Warhammer 40,000 world.
What do you think?

Holding off on anything 40k until dust is settled and 8th is known but these are very nice. Ahrimen and terminators are particularly nice. Only slightly meh one is the bottom flame sorcerer.
I can definitely see that. Doubt GW will go that route, but this Fenris-centric stuff goes reek of End Times-esque shenanigans and quite a few folks still feel burned over that.
That said, the books and models do look rather great / fun to convert!
The 13th Black Crusade has been pitched as an apocalyptic scenario in the fluff for a long time.
Even the last time they had a 13th black crusade (although the pitch went from “apocalypse!” to “um, nothing changed…”
That bottom flamer is a bottom flamer in more ways than just being the picture at the bottom. He looks like he’s powered by curry and beer.
that might also explain a lot of their background and the puke green colour of their armour 😉
I had to check to see if this was an april fool prank. Badly designed toys. If you say “magnus the red” backwards fast it says, “hasbro, here we come.” True story.
That’s the paintjobs. Honestly, I’m really disappointed with the way they painted up Magnus, but I think I can tell that there’s something cool underneath that brightly colored, low contrast mess.
and there is nothing wrong with that!!
Very impressive although I wished they had continued the curved blade theme with the Tzaangors. The bog-standard chainswords seem slightly out of place for me.
Very cool stuff, nice to see Tzeentchian stuff get a go for a change. Has been quite a while since we saw anything else than, granted also quite cool, Khornate and Nurgle stuff.
Tzangors you say? I wonder how long before we get them for Age of Sigmar.
If they were being sensible they would just add a selection of arms so they can be used in both.
A 40k army and I want it all. Sorry family, everyone’s getting coal for Christmas.
I love the new look beaky helmet the leftmost chap in the pic that’s 4th from bottom is wearing. This whole kit is very appealing.
Magnus is looking a little cyclopean to me. I thought he had two eyes but lost one? Maybe it’s just the pic.
Think I’ve read somewhere that they’re including multiple faces in the kit for him, one with a missing eye, one classic Cyclopes and a couple others.
Of course, makes perfect sense now you’ve pointed it out. Thanks 🙂
Take my money!!!!!
I’m glad to see them get the works done on this army. The old idea that you field marines or terminators only for an entire army just made them look bland on the tabletop. Adding more options that are true full plastic kits as apposed to the hybrid kits that you needed to go threw the web store to make your basic units is very good news.
As a TS player I’m really excited about this release. The Rubricae are really nice and I like how they finally get weapons other than bolters; the ass cannon in nice and it looks like over half can have what looks like either flamers or combi-flamers. The leaked pic I saw of the Tzaangors earlier today left me a bit cold, but the pic above confirms my suspicitions that it was a combo of the paint job index photo that let them down as they were obviously based off the WQ Tzaangors but didn’t look as nice. They look a… Read more »
Those are some impressive models for CSM. It’s also good to see Tzeentch get some love after all love that Khorne has gotten.
they are very rigid/un-dynamic, but I guess that is just the backstory affecting the design 🙁
Its great that they might tap into the Legionary Wars, Heresy Narrative, can they pair other Chaos-Loyal legions in renewed conflicts? Who do the Emperor’s Children fight?
Iron Hands maybe?
No thanks. Cluttered and stiff looking… no surprise. Having said that, I like the bottom model. It actually has some negative space on it. Might work in other games, depending on the price.
Other than the exalted sorcerer trio and Magnus (the one you like), they don’t look all that cluttered, no more than any other Chaos mini at least. And the ‘stiffness’ is justified considering apart from the Sorcerers they’re animated suits of armour so wouldn’t be super fluid anyway. They’re supposed to look relentless oncoming doom which they fit perfectly.
…and it looks like their weapons are very anti-infantry (?) with assault cannons and flamers (understandably)
How will they kill all those Space Wolves!! – Will they get Dreadnaughts loaded with lascannon options or will their psychic powers fry crew brains inside armour?
I just love the fact that the Rubric Terminators get access to a chainblade khopesh of all things. Would it be practical? Not even remotely. Would it even work? Hell no. Is it awesome? All the yes! It is just the kind of bonkers weapon mashup that 40K is famous for. All told, I really like how this release is shaping up, and in particular I appreciate the way in which this 40K version of the Thousand Sons is a reasonable extrapolation of their 30K look. You can see plenty of continuity with their classic armour and gear alongside the… Read more »
They look good but i love the look of the Tzaangors they would make a great beastmen army for AOS or chaos marine army.
Is it at all weird that I see these and REALLY want to get the Rubric marines & Terminators to paint up as Burning of Prospero-era/ pre-Heresy Thousand Sons legion veterans in red & gold?
I have the same dilemma – I don’t know whether to paint my Thousand sons blue or red
I thought defiantly post-Heresy blue – but looking at the pre-Rubric colour scheme, blue seems washed-out and subdued…
I found a version of the pre-Heresy armour on one of Forge World’s blogs that I’m planning on half-inching: silver base, painted over with their Angron Red clear paint. Thinking prime with AP Plate Mail, drybrush/highlight with Shining Silver should work quite nicely…
This dropped about an hour ago … I’ll leave this link for any who haven’t seen it yet

oh dear god. back to eating a diet of ramen noodles for a month again… hungry but happy hehehe
Fantastic. GW so very much back on top. 1Ksons stuff looks awesome. Money for the lot earmarked already. Really looking forward to see how the fluff pans out to go along with it. Burn Fenris BURN!!!!!
I am somewhat concerned with how the fluff pans out! I hear so many rumours that I just don’t know whats going to go down!
For Russ!!
as for the models, they look great, shame 🙂
I might actually buy some to make dead (like they should be) 1ksons to stick to the bases of my Space Wolves!
Yay! The good guys return!
These look fantastic, especially the sorcerers. It’s good to see the terminators based on the earlier marks of armour too, still going from the heresy. Apparently things are built to last in the 31st millennium.
I’m not sure about Magnus’ enormous horn-nipples but I guess the warp does things to you.
I hope the fluff is as good as the hype – this could give 40k a great shake up.
Very nice, retro-style release. What an age 8th edition 40K will be. Eldar Harlequin armies can defend webway gates from armies of Thousand Sons, Genestealer Cultists will rebel against Adeptus Mechanicus overlords, etc.
These are amazing! Can’t wait to get my hands on them…
I’m glad they’re moving thus story along and updating the chaos forces. Means more demons for my wolves to kill!
Can wait to see what else follows through the warp!!!
