Blast Away Foes Of The Imperium With A Sokar Stormbird
October 1, 2016 by brennon
If a Thunderhawk Gunship isn't big enough for you then how about the massive Sokar Pattern Stormbird from Forge World? It's now available for pre-order...
This is an absolutely huge creation. You can see just how big this is when compared to other transport options available to the Imperium below. You can grab the rules for this beast HERE too.
"The Sokar pattern Stormbird is a dedicated attack lander. It has served as a high-durability orbital assault craft, a mobile bastion and firebase which could land a Space Marine strike force and withstand heavy ground fire while its cargo or troops and war machines disembarked to press the attack.
One of the later patterns developed, the Sokar was the design precursor to the smaller Thunderhawk Gunship."
Inside the Sokar you can pack fifty Space Marines, five Dreadnoughts a Rhino or even a mix of some of the above. When they talk about boot space next time you buy a car think back to how many hobby cases you could fit in a Sokar.
Armaments-wise this beast of a flyer has access to Heavy Bolters, Lascannons and Dreadstrike Missiles for when thinks get a bit hairy.
The Sokar is a very much a Space Marine vehicle too in design which I like. It's big, heavy, brutal, and no-nonsense. Armed to the teeth it looks like it would do as much damage as a small retinue of Space Marines on the ground.
Just think of the noise this thing would make as it screamed across the battlefield ready to deliver its deadly cargo!
What do you think of it?

Been waiting with nervous anticipation for this to be released for several months now. But the price tag is just ridiculous, so I won’t be getting one after all
I’d love to have one, but with Adeptus Titanicus around the corner from Forgeworld too I think the Epic version may be more in my price range.
Are there any news about the approximate release date for Adeptus Titanicus? I have been waiting for that game since i first heard about it.
I think February? If I remember the rumour correctly.
That is one big flyer.
Nice model. Do people really pay those prices though?
Yes they do. Otherwise they would not price it so high. So people view FW models as the Prada of the miniature world and except the price as is. Too them if the price was much lower they may question it’s value and worth. In other words, it wont make them feel great when they bring one to the table if everyone can do the same as it’s cheap enough for everyone to have it. Many companies use status as a means to set such high prices for what they sell. I resonantly did some contract work for a lingerie… Read more »
A big ol’ girl and a lovely looking model to boot. A bit on the pricey side for us mere mortals though, not that I was expecting any less.
It doesn’t say Stormbird to me, it’s not big enough (shouldn’t it carry a whole company). I’m pretty sure its been described as graceful in the fluff / HH novels.
Plus thats way too expensive for something I’d never use.
While cool (for some) as a collectible these big beasties should be left to Epic. For me at least.
They invented the “sokar” pattern as a bridge between the proper stormbird (which would be a lot bigger) and the thunderhawk. A fullsize stormbird would be bigger than a tau manta.
How is something that big even practical to use on the tabletop except as terrain?
The same can be said for almost any vehicle in the 40k range, and flyers in particular …
So much resin! I hope all the seams line up after a trip across the pond.
Surely other than as terrain, Stormbirds are impractical to use on the tabletop outside of Epic/Adaptus Titanicus/Aeronautica Imperialis? Especially considering that’s apparently a small variety of it rather than the actual stormbird from the novels which would be even bigger.
That flyer poops out Rhinos!
As pointed out by other commenters, it does seem like the natural home for this kind of big beastie would be Adeptus Titanicus. While having a detailed look at how this unit looks up close is nice, the price point is eye watering for something that could rarely be used as anything other than a terrain piece. A squadron of these roaring in over a an Epic battlefield, or even better the full size Strombirds from the novels which are pretty much described as being the last word in Crusade and Heresy era Astartes awesome sauce, would combine evocative gaming… Read more »
Its more a collectors piece, or a centrepiece for display than a practical gaming model in my humble opinion.
a great model but to rich for me.
Nice, but definitely indicative of why epic is so sorely missed right now. For £750 I could outfit an entire Space Marine chapter with Titans, flyers, leviathans etc from eBay, and get to use them in a game. Great to have for collectors, but hugely impractical for gaming unless you own a gaming table the size of a golf course – and I suppose if you have that you won’t be sniffing at the price tag either. (It always was one of my millionaire hobby dreams to have a massive barn sized gaming table that you can walk about on,… Read more »
