Guards Guards, The Upcoming Discworld Board Game
September 9, 2011 by dracs
If any of you watched our coverage of Qcon 2011 in Belfast you may remember we had a quick look at a new Discworld board game, Guards! Guards! Well it's September and released, so I thought I should take the time to give you a quick reminder of what this new game is all about.
Welcome to Ankh-Morpork, City of 1000 surprises. The game sees you take on the role of a new recruit to the City Watch, trying to prevent yet another threat to the city's peace.
The Eight Great Spells have escaped the Octavo kept in the darkest dungeon of Unseen University (again) and as the new recruit it is up to you to get them back. Sergeant Colon is probably too busy making sure no one steals the Opera House.
But fear not, you will not be alone in this endeavour. As you travel through the Ankh-Morpork you will get the chance to gather "volunteers" from throughout the book series to help you. Win them over with your charm or coin and they will be yours to use in combat or to carry a spell back to the gates of the University.
Oh and let's not forget the Elucidated Brethren of Ebon Night (meetings every Thursday between the Ankh-Morpork Fine Art Appreciation Society and the Ankh-Morpork Folk Dance and Song Club). These despicable characters can be used to sabotage the other player's attempts to get back with a spell and when you have three of them you can summon a dragon into any segment of the city.
But this is not all. Each player is also able to call upon the assistance of their own guild, with each player belonging to either the Assassins, the Fools, the Thieves or the Alchemists.
Of course Ankh-Morpork is not just any city. There is far more for you to worry about than being mugged or the occasional dragon.
As some of you might have gathered I am something of a Discworld fanatic and since getting my hands on this at Qcon I have been pouring over my Discworld maps and playing games of Thud while avidly waiting for this to come out.
If you're like me and are determined to get the full Discworld experience I would suggest you check out some of these figures from Micro Art Studio.
These are some really nice looking miniatures, based on the artwork by Paul Kidby, and I think they would make really nice alternative game pieces.
Well, I can't wait to get my copy of Guards! Guards!. Anyone here think they might get it?
But remember, The Turtle Moves!

happy times for Discworld fans
This will have a space alongside my signed copy of Thud, my Discworld special edition films, my Maps of Discworld, my signed books, my framed picture of myself and Terry Pratchett… maybe I need help. Though I would prefer more storage space.
BoW Sam
oh when i said thud i meant the game
Thud: a book signed by Terry Pratchett that fell off the shelf just as you were typing. lol
Saw the QCON coverage and thought this really has to be the ideal Christmas present. Now to try and drop some hints
I was hugely excited when I saw this covered at Gencon – hoping that when you get your copy, you’ll give us a sneak preview, Sam 🙂
