What affect does mortars have on tanks
In first ed top armour counts as the side so you get +1 pen, and light mortars have +1 medium +2 and heavy have +3 so you can hurt tanks up to a 10+, but its not reliable since you’ll need a 5 or 6 to hit then a 5 or 6 to glance, plus you’ll get an AT rifle for half the points, a bazooka for the same or a panzerschreck(or a dozen panzerfausts) for a few more.
I don’t think the mortar HE values are changing in 2nd Ed with the switch to templates but they might.
Just flicked through 2n edition rulebook and this seems to be quite right now, with one thing to add. Before (1st ed.) mortars did D3 (light), D6 (medium) and 2D6 (heavy) hits. I don’t think it was capped so a medium mortar could do (if he hits) up to 6 hits on a vehicle, giving you multiple rolls to penetrate. Now they have a 1″, 2″ and 3″ template and it is explicitly stated, that a vehicle only gets hit once by a template. So all mortars only inflict a single hit on a vehicle now.
