Many thanks for the tutorial Romain, great as always. Marble has been something I have been wanting to do for some time.
Awesome use for terrain, either as ruins or buildings in an ancients setting. Great video! 😀
Thanks ! I must do a tutorial on larger surfaces at some point…
I was thinking a stone giant or something similar.
Large flat surfaces are best… but unless you want your giant to look like an antique golem, or like one of those fake fossilized giants sculpted from gypsum in America (look up “Cardiff Giant”…), best not to do polished marble instead of skin.
wow that looks great Romain, I always thought the veins were minerals seeping into faults in the rocks?

Thanks ! “Marble” is a general term for any hard construction (non precious) stone that can be polished to decorative effect, most of which are the “real” marbles in the geological sense of the term. Real marbles (and most other such stones) are all metamorphic, that is to say they’ve been subjected to tremendous pressures and temperatures under the surface of the earth, and, as a result, have been reshaped, bent or sheared, sometimes in layers. Indeed, one of the metamorphic reaction is that under high temperature, some of the minerals (not all at the same time) will liquefy and… Read more »
Sounds like your getting a lot of inspiration from your studies Romain so keep it up if your enjoying it.
Studies, yes… but not necessarily at University : one learns at every age. It’s all about reading up on things that interest you, whatever they are. The best way to get inspired isn’t to wait, or pray, or take drugs, it’s to learn something new ! 🙂
you learn more in the school of life anyway Romain
The lady of the house couldn’t understand why I was watching a “French sounding guy” talk about how marble was formed. Then she realized it was the painting guy and wondered why marble, I told her it was to look fancy.
Great video and I hope you don’t run out of shoulder pads to work on. This would be a good time to look at the color wheel video for some inspiration for some funky marble.

All 6 of these are really good.
Thanks for your kind words ! I am grateful for your lady’s indulgence regarding my work… and for your viewership ! 🙂
I saw the thread come up but i saved it for my Friday after work chill out. painting is, along with your delivery, the perfect way to unwind . thank you so much for this . my red veil arrived today and jade yu jing is my vision . I would be at a loss without your input and would likely be overwhelmed with how to achieve the effect I had in my head. one of my favourite tutorials .a little about the qualities of marble and the process behind its formation along with the examples of naturally occurring marble,… Read more »
Thank you for your very kind (and pointed) compliments… I’ll endeavour to continue that sort of thing in the future ! 🙂
Marble is a characterful stone and where I’ve seen it painted in any model, looks fantastic. But out of my painting league.
However, this (yet again) excellent tutorial made it look achievable for even me to attempt and get something vaguely marblesque. So when I’ve finished my current project, I’ll have to find something suitable to try out my new found inspiration on!
Don’t disparage yourself… It’s very achievable ! Embrace accidents, dilute your paints, and soldier on ! 🙂
