It's that time again as Andy and Sam have a look at what's been happening in some of the industry's most popular wargaming magazines.
This month we look at White Dwarf, Wargames Illustrated and Miniature Wargames.
Don't forget if you have any suggestions for other magazines you would like to see discussed drop your comments below.
why don’t you guys do a magazine??? it would be awesome and if you made it glossy and cool it might help your goal of getting wargaming into the mainstream???
That’s already a fairly saturated market, relative to the number of potential buyers, and the initial layout would be massive to get it printed and distributed, and getting retailers to stock it would be another matter entirely. All in all, a huge undertaking, and probably not one that would make profit. For a magazine to have a hope of getting wargaming into the mainstream it would have to do at least two things: firstly focus on a brand with existing mindshare, like Star Wars, and secondly get shelf space everywhere from supermarkets, to newsagents. Unfortunately I don’t think the latter… Read more »
Sweyn Forkbeard was the father of Cnut the Great. Quite a cool dude!
Nice chat on the current magazines! I like the format. Reminds me of our group sitting around the new Wargames Illustrator every month chatting about the new stuff and the articles! 🙂
Would be cool if you guys REALLY got your read on and did a book review from time to time as well. Was curious if any of the Warhammer Fantasy or Warhammer40k books were any good. I recall staring at several of the books and deciding upon seeing the price to wait and learn a bit more. Also, you could cover Mantic’s Journal since you’re doing magazine reviews.
I do agree with Avengingangel, it would be nice to have a wargaming magazine published by a group not affiliated with the producer of said minis (like almost ALL wargaming magazines are now).
Lucky for you mate I write book reviews for the site already. We try and get one out whenever we can
love this show look forward to it
You should add No Quarter to your next mag review
At the end they mention they tried to get a copy of No Quarter in time, but did not. So, good news, I can confirm that you’ll get No Quarter next time.
Again, got the newest WD in today, so this video is already outdated for me. Do the one of august on the beginning, not the end, of the month 😉
Couple of observations:. May have just been me but I had trouble hearing Andy. Sam was fine. May have just been the postion of the clip on mics, Sam had his on the neck of his t-shirt. Secondly, Sam, it might help to put slips of paper/cut down post it notes to help find the pages more easily. Maybe numbered to tie in with the running order. Second plug for Airfix this weekend. The cruiser tanks article reminded me that they are releasing a new tool Cromwell tank (presumably 1/76 scale) which looks rather nice. Also has an option for… Read more »
I am sorry, but these are some of the worst videos produced by BoW. If you are going to review a magazine, read the whole thing. Please pic who is going to do the review as well seeing Andy lead Sam by a string is not that entertaining. Even if Sam needs to script out the whole thing and have an off screen copy being teleprompted, than do it. These will make for a far better video.
lol Sam and Andy you have been told! 😉
There’s always a critic…
BoW Romain
Sam isn’t as used to being on camera as some of the rest of us, but I’ll take your suggestions and see what we can do.
Andy
There are some really good suggestions above. I love the concept, the delivery just needs a bit of polish. kervin, Sam is getting his sea legs. I’m confident that his performance will improve over time. It takes courage to open up to an audience, especially over the internet. Thanks Andy and Sam. I truly appreciate your show!
It’s easy talking on the internet imho…
So long as it only involves tapping a keyboard with two fingers in complete anonymity!
Good call @wncranger 😉
Sam is clearly the coolest dude on BoW.
Chilled yet engaging delivery with good observation and memory for detail.
and he has the most hair 🙂
This is a great slot, really enjoyed it, keep up the good work!!
Hey, I am chilled (getting old and always feeling a bit parky)
Still have a good head of hair though not as long as Sam’s these days.
But my memory… oh dear oh dear 🙁
Still, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad! lol
Cant we just have Andy do this, Sams a bit….well he doesn’t do a good job, he sounds like hes only just picked up the mags 5 minutes before the vid. Also never read 2000AD……. that makes me sad inside…….
I wish I had all the time it takes to read those magazines and do all the other stuff I need to do in a day. As @chibi said, we’ll get better at this. juggling what’s coming next, with what it was about and trying to be natural in front of a camera isn’t that easy… if it was… everyone would do it. Don’t you agree? As for 2000AD, that’s just a symptom of our advancing years… so many youngsters don’t know the simple pleasures of a good British comic book nowadays… it’s all WIZZ-BANG and angsty heroes with “issues”.… Read more »
That is a bit harsh imho he does just fine.
Give the lad a chance, no one is going to be a Jeremy Paxman from the outset.
I agree, people should check out his book reviews they’re very good.
dont know if this has been said but maybe BoW could do an E-Zine. and see how that goes over? maybe make it they email you with a pdf/ebook version attached for a small subscription price, or include it in backstage or give backstage members a 1/2 price discount.
I just want to say that all historical do NOT NEED that hung up on – I know it can seem a little dry with no monsters or robots.
And by the way Sven, is a common name as it mean “Lad”
I like historical. And i like the name Sven. I also think Historical is a good type as it is an excellent way to teach history (as my high school World History Teacher & Military History Club Founder can prove). Also i find that history is really fun when you find a general or commander from history and form an army they lead and use their tactics and see if you can change history.
By heart I am a Historical gamer – Vikings, ECW, TYW and the GNW.
But lately I have been pull off that path and those have been joined by a couple of Fantasy armies, some Cutlass crews. And soon proberly also some Warpath and Infinity.
I got sidetracked – but I for instance don’t have an issue proxying historical models as well as any in any of the Sci-fi & Fantasy.
I liked Sven, but not as much as Samantha! *wolf whistle*
Best explain that is a reference to “Sorry I Haven’t a Clue”
Blow your horn with Gabriel Humph!
I did mean to say ” just want to say that all historical do NOT NEED that hung up on details”
@rasmus Indeed they don’t… and the vast majority aren’t.
However I won’t relay the encounter I had with a gentleman (I use that word quite wrongly) who had an issue with my Pulp Weird War II German army being painted in grey… they were in a stone green doncha know… only idiots who believe black & white films think they’re in grey… doncha know…
Hmmm… looks like I shared after all. 😉
Anyway, the crux of the story is, he’s lucky I’d just won my game and hadn’t been to the pub yet! 😀
How did he know that Pulp Weird Nazi soldiers wore stone green uniforms?
I would have demanded fabric samples as evidence! lol
Not every day you run into a land owning titled chap i.e. gentleman (I had thought the English tax system had ended most of them).
Anyways, next time roll them out in hot pink and see the horrid look on their purist faces!
As the only Englishman on the BoW team i can say nope the aristocracy are still hanging on, we just don’t pay them any attention any more
Those two special charactors (Uriah Jacobus and the Arch-Confessor) were in Chapter Approved in a very very old issue of White Dwarf and were options for an Imperial Guard army if I remember correctly.
I don’t particularly see there is a problem with the video at all. Its interesting sometimes to just sit down and listen/watch people having a chat about the magazine and the hobby with no rigid structure and just talking as you go.
And totally agree with Sam about the whole historical wargaming thing – there is no fun in just doing it as history had it happen, mix it up a bit and see what ‘could’ have happened. Always fun to see what could have been achieved IF the Saxons had won at Hastings etc.
Don’t see anything inherently wrong in trying to emulate an historical battle as accurately as possible.
But have to agree there is something to be said for seeing what might have happened if things had been done differently.
eg What if the Saxon shield wall held and not broken formation?
Definetly appeals to me!
