Sharknado: The Board Game Is On Kickstarter! Oh Hell Yes!
August 15, 2016 by deltagamegirl22
Is Sharknado a cheesy, B movie? Yes. But come on, you have to love it for what it is! It certainly has a cult following and now you can relive all the crazy moments from the movies on the tabletop in Sharknado: The Board Game, the newest Kickstarter from Devious Devices. "Oh Hell Yes!"
In this game, players will work cooperatively to defeat the Sharknado by putting a stop to the shark-filled twister. The Sharknado is controlled by its own AI deck, and comes as a miniature in the game. The rest of the components are standees and cards. Since it is cooperative, there is no specific turn order - players can activate in whatever manner offers them the greatest use in the course of a turn.
They can move, trade weapons or items, and fight. Of course we are talking about man-eating sharks here, so there will be dismemberment and even death if players aren't careful.
One of their main goals with this game was to provide a real narrative experience for players while operating in the context of the movies, and that said, they want feedback from fans and want to incorporate as much great aspects from the movies as they can. Their goal is to include a Kickstarter bundle of items and cards in the pledges that are fan generated requests.
This could very well be a gateway game for non-gamers that are familiar with the Sharknado universe, and conversely will offer a fast and fun gaming experience for seasoned gamers too.
What do you think of playing Sharknado on the tabletop?

Well….looking at the above video and images I thought “EEK” really rubbish board, but after going to the website and checking out the game play video. I changed my mind….
Looking at the rules, it seems like they got the flavour of the films, and a combat system which is way more detailed then the actions on the board…. So i feel I will do this kick starter as a cool party game.. and solo too…..
Hope it does well…. well better then the 4th film..!!!!
Thanks for the honest chance, soulman! Don’t worry about the board. The version in the How to Play video is just a prototype 🙂
The game was designed to be a gamer’s game and most of the folks that have really enjoyed it have never even seen the movies. Let us know if you have any questions!
I cannot believe they actually made a game based on those crappy movies.
They are the pinnacle of the B-movie. Philistine. Wait until ‘Sky Sharks’ is out!
Smacks of, “Find the cheapest IP you can”. I thought Terminator Genesys had already claimed that title from Mantic’s Mars Attacks. But no, if you can’t afford an IP from a very old movie that couldn’t believe it’s luck when a games company remembered it existed, or an IP from a movie who’s sequel was immediately cancelled when it bombed at the box office, then there’s always an IP from a movie that only Kim Newman has actually watched.
Tell me if I’m being too harsh 😀
Terrible film but the premise might just be crazy enough to make a good game 🙂
I suppose @brennon , the point that underlines my post is that attaching a terrible, bargain basement IP to what might very well be a fantastic game, may end up being more hinderance than help in generating sales.
True enough – can’t just be a pasted on theme.
Not too harsh, but our motivations couldn’t be farther. 😉
We wanted an IP with plenty of popularity, but also plenty of flexibility (and Sharknado doesn’t even take Sharknado seriously).
Our goal is not to make wads of cash. In fact, it’s unlikely that most board games will turn a huge profit. Our main goal with the IP is to create a game that represents our skills as game designers and puts our company name out into the world!
Like a, “we took this rather unpromising IP and turned it into a good playable game” kind of thing? That makes some sense.
Yeah, what you said lol
Who is Kim Newman? Any relation to Gary…
I’ve never seen any of the films, but this does sound kind of fantastic…
Thanks, angelicdespot!
The films are definitely an acquired taste, but if you get the chance, try watching the 2nd or 4th. They are my favs now.
Ha ha – will do. I’ve seen the trailers, pretty recently in fact. My brother showed them to me, i can’t remember why now. Perhaps to have a laugh at how crap some films can be.
I get the feeling I’d enjoy them though.
A man of taste!
