Historical Wargaming Comes To Kings Of War – An Update!
August 15, 2016 by brennon
We got a bit more news on what's happening with Mantic Games' new Kings of War Historical book! We got a link from a community member, avernos, who mentioned that Ronnie had been talking about it at Gen Con.
The game will let you play with armies from all eras of History. Here's some of what Mantic had to say about it...
"Within this book you will find the rules and army lists to allow you to play Kings of War with a range of different armies from across a wide swathe of history, from antiquity to the late middle ages.
You can tailor your units with veteran abilities and even introduce mythical elements to your force. Existing players will also find some new ways to play. We sincerely hope you have great fun with it."
Inside the book you're also going to get...
- The core Kings of War rules.
- Lists for historical armies from Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages. Use a combination of a master list, themes and mercenary units to build your army.
- Veteran abilities to create unique units and represent elite fighters.
- New rules and scenarios.
- Add mythical units to recreate legends (or make new ones).
- Play your historical army against Kings of War fantasy armies!
It sounds great and you can find out more about the armies they are proposing over on the forum link HERE.
Are you excited for this?

Sounds good
First thing that popped into my head was the different armies fighting Evil at the end of Time Bandits, hehe.
This could be great fun with the right people that would enjoy and go wild with it.
and if you’re going to do that then you should pick up these from Northumbrian Tin soldier

That’s great! Hehe, thanks for the link. 🙂
Have already worked my Greek list in with a host of Greek myth elements, sure will be nice to have them all in one list rather than taken from several.
I am waiting for this book and I wonder if you can use it in the KoW tournaments too
that will be up to tournament organisers, my guess is probably not The lists are balanced with each other but not with the fantasy lists and they have a different set of adapted rules, like skirmishers for example
YES!!!
The final push I needed to paint my grand Armee… Canister shoot on the goblins….
Pointy ear on horsie “form square” and blast them haha.
What is that thing flying… it looks like a dragon…”form sq…WHOOS… all dead.
Yes still love it…
Sorry to say this to you but I don’t know if Napoleonic French will be included in this it looks like classical to medieval
Over all this could be interesting system. It kinda reminds me about Warhammer Ancient Battles from back in day.
This could be interesting at the very least it is worth checking out.
sounds interesting! playing waterloo with magic?
Sure. They did that exact thing in Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
This is one of those products I wonder about, who will buy it? I’ll guess some Mantic fans will probably pick it up. I doubt that any historical gamers will, they probably stick to what they got or buy a “proper” historical game instead.
You might be right. This might end up being really niche product on already niche market. And yet on Mantic they seem to have so much passion that they dare to try this out.
I’m interested in what a proper warfare might be and why this wouldn’t count as one with no one having seen the lists or playedit the game yet.
Might be good. I hope they do some medieval rules, and models to go with them. Some of those Basilean figures are tragic, and could use proxies.
they have lists in this rule set for medieval armies, won’t be making any models this is solely to cater for people who have them already, since there are a ton of community members looking for historic lists to use their armies with.
Plenty of minis out there for early to late medieval from a lot of companies, which period were you thinking of doing?
I was more interested in the mini’s. I have tons of Perry medieval stuff, but am always looking for heroes and such. I’m not all that interested in the rules… just any potential models.
bang out of luck then, it’s just the rule set.
I think there are a fair number of people are already using the KoW rules for historic armies. It makes sense to publish a book to make that easier and hopefully get more people into the game.
re; lasse, I have noticed a trend of late, at least here in the States. It seems with the newer plastics that historicals have become more accessible. In our club we have had people that are long time fantasy and sci fi players expressing interest in systems such as Bolt Action and other Warlord systems(as they are what we play the most). Weather the minis be a box from the Perry’s, Victrix, Warlord, or some other manufacturer. They have brought the entry price down. I think that It is great that Mantic is building yet another bridge between the different… Read more »
I couldn’t agree more, the only reason Mantic went for this was the request of the community as a lot of people saw the potential had were making their own lists anyway. Just like Warhammer Ancients 20 years ago a fantasy company helping people play historics is always welcome
