Cool Land Speeder Tactics
August 17, 2010 by johnlyons
Darrell has a look at the Space Marine Land Speeder tactics. We rate these little vehicles. Especially when they are equipped with two Multi-Meltas or a sinlge Multi-melta and Typhoon Missile Launchers!

I’d say Speeders and Whirlwinds are both extremely underrated, IMO. I don’t use speeders myself, but your tactic seems pretty sound to me – I’m the Whirlwind nut
Thats me! a-on-alpha 😀

Always wanted to be mentioned by the BOW guys. Made my day, thank you 😀
I’m going to run 2 Land Speeders with 2 Multi-Meltas each, see how that goes. If it’s not so good for me I’ll take them standard and try some turbo boost blocking 😀
4+ cover save for speeders going flat out. only Bikes/ jet bikes get the 3+ due to them being so small.
Saim Hann all the way for full skimmer lists mmmm!!
I have been toying around with the idea of two to three speeders each in there own slot, with missile launchers and multi-meltas. First round turbo boots behind the or to the side of the target, let them do what they will, turn two one pops the transport with one of the speeders and then use the missile launchers from the others to kill the inner goodness. even if you need to move twelve you can still fire the meltas and missiles as defensive weapons (frag only). This only works if you are running two different slots of speeders.
I hate landspeeders… then again i play Chaos… the tactic above was used against me once, blocking out my Landraider containing 5 Terminator Champions with dual ligtningclaws. and it was nothing i really could do exept trying to shoot it out of the skies…
Then i also faced a ravenwing army using my Imperial guard and then the landspeeders was´nt much of a threat, four hydra flak tanks totally slaughtered them… but still… annoying little veichels if you´re playing Chaos.
Sneaky little tactic – I like it 🙂
Still no sexy female assistant ?
I thought you volunteered 😛
But that is an epic tactic, guys. However, just paint double yellow lines in front of your vehicles and they’re foiled 😉
The 2 best things that I have ever done with a land speeder are; 1) With no weapons left on it, I rammed a Wave serpent loaded with troops and both it and the land speeder exploded killing all the troops inside. 2) I turbo boosted a land speeder with multi melta between 2 Leman Russ tanks. My opponent had the 2 Russ’ and heavy weapons team try and fail to kill it. On the next turn I killed one of the leman Russ tanks. It then took the other lemon Russ and the heavy weapons team to kill the… Read more »
For future reference, you can’t ram with land speeders. They aren’t tanks so they can’t ram
Really? I thought you could, but you wouldn’t get the +1 for penetration strength because it wasn’t a tank. Feels a bit odd to have a mention in the ramming section about getting +1 strength for “mass” if it is a tank.
Sure enough the ramming rules are in the tank section of vehicles but still… cheese?
The rules are in the tank section for a reason they could easily have placed it in the regular vehicle rules section The +1 for being a tank is a bonus for ramming non-tank enemies (because that’d be easier) and so you take the extra damage for ramming something huge like a Leman Russ.
I would have to disagree. I don’t think it states anywhere that only tanks can ram or that non-tanks can’t ram.
Dracus it’s in the tanks section of the rules, and it only references tanks doing it, therefore only tanks can do it. Look at infantry, the rules that apply to all infantry models are in the first section, the rules that apply to a specific type of infantry get their own rules in their own section because that’s all they apply to. Same thing here.it’s a tank specific rule so it’s in the tank section, hell it even says it’s a special kind of tank shock and since only tanks can shock….
Even though it doesn’t specifically state that only tanks can ram I have to say I am fairly convinced by bigbris explanation regarding ramming (and tank shocking) being tank specific actions.
Although this could have given my disarmed land speeder a final chance to redeem itself on the battlefield 😉
Bigbri is super right, only tanks can ram and “tank” shock, it says in the section you just have to read it thoroughly, also if any tank could tank shock then why would orks have an upgrade for there vehicles that allows them to tank shock( reinforced ram).
Not played 40k in many years, so not really sure how any of this really works but if the blocked vehicle just rammed the flyer, what happens?
I assume the flyer gets to roll to see if it dodges out of the way, but does the rammer carry on moving?
If so, it kind of negates the tactic as they would (should?) be facing in the right direction so they would just be doing what they would be doing in the first turn….
Of course, that assumes the rammer carries on moving forward in the ram attempt.
If the skimmer manages to dodge the ram then then ramming vehicle instantly stops which is why this tactic is nasty, and why my enemies LS’s are generally brought down first turn in a hail of fire, nothing worse than them blocking my termies from squishing stuff.
Ah, OK. I see why the tactic would work then (although the rule doesn’t make much sense to me…. Why the hell would you stop when you are pelting forward trying to ram something that is in the way??????)
Yeah completely agree, doesn’t make sense to me wither, if i was driving it’d be foot on the floor and I ain’t stopping til i hit something lol
I’d still try going even after hitting something!!! lol
Don’t forget about the Land Speeder Storm. Turbo Boost in the Scout move, dump out a scout squad with a power fist and fire a multi-melta. Pure tank-killy goodness… unless you don’t get first turn…
I love havin 3 land speeders in my 1500 and above games. I put assult cannons on them and use rending to take LR’s and stop them in there tracks. That and they work wonders agenst anyone on foot. If I have the points ill put a multi melta on one, and a telle homer for my termies.
Seems risky to go for rending, but then again, with 12 total shots, it’s worth it…
Where does it say that Land Speeders can turbo-boost? I see where it says you get a 3+ cover save if you turbo-boost but I am finding it difficult to locate where it says they can.
I agree that it doesn’t make sense that they cannot ram vehicles.
“Mass. If the vehicle is a tank +1” pg. 69 main rule book.
Why would that be in there if non-tank vehicles can’t ram anyways?
They don’t turboboost, they move flat out which makes them count as obscured and gives a 4+ cover save, for the ramming bit see my other posts, not typing it twice lol
It look like I have made a mistake on the cover save front
Darrell admitting a mistake? THE END IS NIGH PEOPLE!!! lol
Still a decent wheeze Darrell.
Would my DE Reaver bikes be any good for this tactic.
Assume them to be a lot softer but they would get the 3+ turbo boosted cover save.
Sorry if that is a really niave question but have very limited gameplay experience.
Still a pretty effective tactic though even with only a 4+ save. My best ever use of Landspeeders was I think some time back in 4th edition when rending was even better against vehicles. It was a very big multiplayer game my army I had a squadron of 3 tornados with Assault Cannons and Heavy bolters. On the opposite side was a Warhound Titan. We got turn one, I zipped my speeders right infront of it then asked an ally to take down the Titans void shields with his heavy weapons squad, thankfully he agreed to and succeeded. I then… Read more »
it’s a 4+ cover save for turbo boosting
3+ cover save for turboboosting. 4+ cover save is for flat out gravity vehicles movement.
6 Scout squads (4 with combat weps the rest with sniper rifles and launchers)
Combat squads.
8 Land Speeder Storms.
Add a Vindicator and Dreads in drop pods and this can run quite nicely.
it price that puts me off.. money wise, if they did like a box set for 40 quid for 3 or somert (aka buy two get one free) Then id take um, but when a three man squad is the price of second hand DS, it alittle off putting.
tho i do <3 my whirlwind XD which seems to be pair with speeders as the gimmiky ones, i disagree completely, both are powerful
in the rules it apparently it isn’t allowed for some vehicles to tank shock/ram but my club has a house rule where you can but the hit has a -1 and you suffer a glancing hit with +1 on anything such as a skimmer and then allow any normal vehicle to tank shock/ram but without the modifier. now getting to the tactic i used: i had no weapons on my speeders(please don’t ask why) and had no weapon to take out a tau hammerhead that was shelling my infantry of an allied SM/IG apocalypse force so i rammed it with… Read more »
Of course non tanks can ram! Ork Trukks come with a ram, they arent tanks, any vehicle can ram. Only walkers cant, because they are walkers. The turbo ram with skimmers is an old trick.
Actually, only tanks can ram. Ork Trukks do not come with a Ram, but have the option to buy Reinforced Ram for 5pts, which allows them to Tank Shock and Ram. Pg. 93 Ork Codex
