The Ground Shakes Before GF9’s New D&D Storm Giant! [Updated]
August 1, 2016 by brennon
The folks at Gale Force Nine have outdone themselves once again with this masterful piece for their Dungeons & Dragons Collector's Series. See what you think of the titanic Storm Giant...wow.
This is a massive model and as you'll see by the back of the box it comes in nine different parts. I think that the paint scheme here really adds something to the appreciation of the model.
I mean just look at how massive this thing is! Some have found the sword a bit wonky but I think it's looking epic. Three Giants are on the way; Storm, Frost and Fire. The Storm Giant is out in August with the other two coming out in September and October.
"Storm giants are contemplative seers that live in places far removed from mortal civilisation. Most have pale pmple-graey skin and hair, and glittering emerald eyes. Some rare storm giants are violet-skinned, with deep violet or blue-black hair and silvery grey or purple eyes.
They are benevolent and wise unless angered, in response to which the fury of a storm giant can affect the fate of thousands."
Well, there you go. If you were fed up of too many small projects this could very easily become your next painting task for the whole year. The model is just insane!
I really like the style of the armour with the waves to it and the big helmet with that crest which dominates the model.
The Painted Details
Gale Force Nine sent us through some more images of the Storm Giant with a lick of paint on it. What do you think?
I didn't even notice the little details around the shield arm as we take a look at it more closely. Also, look how the 'Greek' style armour has come across with an almost ancient feel to it.
Last not not least we take a look at the face of this mighty warrior and his flowing beard.
The beard actually looks like the elements themselves; linking the warrior back into the natural world. He is going to be one hell of a warrior to shift!
This is all without mentioning the massive shield and all of it's details!
Would you take on this project?

Considering it’s a *Storm* giant, I’m guessing the wonky sword is intentional to evoke the image of a thunder bolt.
Yes, and Id say its just the angle.
Also, jeepers its huuuuge
I think the sword actually looks a little too big for something wielded in one hand and I don’t like the weird shape. Otherwise it’s a nice model
The sword was probably just made by Forge World, hence the bending and warping : D
Goodness… that looks heavy !
Very nice Greece style giant. Very Colossus of Rhodes.
looks great if not Rhodes, Atlas ?
It has the same problem that many giant miniatures have. It doesn’t look like a giant. It looks like it’s just a different scale. What I mean is, if I was like 20 feet tall and I was fighting some human adventurers or an army of 6 foot soldiers, I wouldn’t be standing like that.
That was my first impression too. It just looks like a mini in larger scale. Very nice, though.
I like it. I imagine him staring down a quivering enemy command group on a distant hillock.
Now that I look at the sword, there’s no basket, or even a quillion to stop the hand running up the blade in a thrusting attack. It’s an odd weapon… not as functional as a kopis, or any other period sword.
I would definitely replace it. If you’re going to invest that much time and effort in a mini, you should invest an equal amount of effort in weapons research, and not arm your god with a massive kitchen knife.
I like the general design, but I’m not sold on the crest, which is far to far forward on the helmet, and the sword, which is too big, terribly designed, and generally breaks the Greek-ish theme.
Now you mention it, he does look like his crest is on backwards.
You’re absolutely right, either it’s a two part helmet and they glued the crest on the wrong way and no-one noticed, or it’s a distinctly odd bit of sculpting, I’m hoping it’s the former, as the latter is visually very off-putting.
Road Atlas 🙂
I’d say that’s one of the better depictions of a storm giant I have seen in mini form. The parts that seem big like the helmet crest and sword make him seem all the stronger and not your average man.
gorgeous sculpt, but as with many giant sized models looks like a bigger scale human and not like a 25mm giant.
I have no use for this model …………. none what so ever……. nuh don’t need it ……………….. I bloody want the thing however ………… damn ……..sigh
Wow ! Nice.
I think he is awesome. I didn’t notice the little electricity bit in the gap on the shield before. I think I would clip that out, he’d look alittle more classy without it. ….classy…………
Just noticed something else that looks weird – tbat crest. Why does it come right over his forehead and down to his nose? Obviously it might offer some protection from any trying to jab his eyes but is that a common tactic when fighting giants?
The sword ruins this model big time , would drive me nuts every time I looked at it. The crest is odd too like people are saying , what were they thinking about?
