Overwatch For The Tabletop
May 23, 2016 by lancorz
As I'm sure most of you are looking forward to Blizzard's release of Overwatch tomorrow, I've taken it upon myself among some very generous aid from the community to bring you Overwatch to the Tabletop.
I've compiled a list of what I think, are the best suited miniatures from across many ranges and companies for an epic experience on the table as you would have on the screen. Please note that these comparisons are for the sculpt only, I ask that you use your imagination for the paint scheme. You can find more of our suggestions and discussion over on the forum thread here.
Without further adieu, as arranged by category:
- The Offense -
Genji, Genji flings precise and deadly Shuriken at his targets, and uses his technologically-advanced katana to deflect projectiles or deliver a Swift Strike that cuts down enemies.
McCree, Armed with his Peacekeeper revolver, McCree takes out targets with deadeye precision and dives out of danger with eagle-like speed.
Pharah, Soaring through the air in her combat armor, and armed with a launcher that lays down high-explosive rockets, Pharah is a force to be reckoned with.
Reaper, Hellfire Shotguns, the ghostly ability to become immune to damage, and the power to step between shadows make Reaper one of the deadliest beings on Earth.
Soldier: 76, Armed with cutting-edge weaponry, including an experimental pulse rifle that’s capable of firing spirals of high-powered Helix Rockets, Soldier: 76 has the speed and support know-how of a highly trained warrior.
Tracer, Toting twin pulse pistols, energy-based time bombs, and rapid-fire banter, Tracer is able to "blink" through space and rewind her personal timeline as she battles to right wrongs the world over.
- The Defense -
Bastion, Repair protocols and the ability to transform between stationary Assault, mobile Recon and devastating Tank configurations provide Bastion with a high probability of victory.
Hanzo, Hanzo’s versatile arrows can reveal his enemies or fragment to strike multiple targets. He can scale walls to fire his bow from on high, or summon a titanic spirit dragon.
Junkrat, Junkrat’s area-denying armaments include a Frag Launcher that lobs bouncing grenades, Concussion Mines that send enemies flying, and Steel Traps that stop foes dead in their tracks.
Mei, Mei’s weather-altering devices slow opponents and protect locations. Her Endothermic Blaster unleashes damaging icicles and frost streams, and she can Cryo-Freeze herself to guard against counterattacks, or obstruct the opposing team's movements with an Ice Wall.
Torbjörn, Torbjörn’s extensive arsenal includes a rivet gun and hammer, as well as a personal forge that he can use to build upgradeable turrets and dole out protective armor packs.
Widowmaker, Widowmaker equips herself with whatever it takes to eliminate her targets, including mines that dispense poisonous gas, a visor that grants her squad infra-sight, and a powerful sniper rifle that can fire in fully-automatic mode.
- The Tank -
Reinhardt, Clad in powered armor and swinging his hammer, Reinhardt leads a rocket-propelled charge across the battleground and defends his squadmates with a massive energy barrier.
D.Va, D.Va’s mech is nimble and powerful—its twin Fusion Cannons blast away with autofire at short range, and she can use its Boosters to barrel over enemies and obstacles, or deflect attacks with her projectile-dismantling Defense Matrix.
Roadhog, Roadhog uses his signature Chain Hook to pull his enemies close before shredding them with blasts from his Scrap Gun. He’s hardy enough to withstand tremendous damage, and can recover his health with a short breather.
Winston, Winston wields impressive inventions—a jump pack, electricity-blasting Tesla Cannon, portable shield projector and more—with literal gorilla strength.
Zarya, Deploying powerful personal barriers that convert incoming damage into energy for her massive Particle Cannon, Zarya is an invaluable asset on the front lines of any battle.
- And Finally, The Support -
Lúcio, On the battlefield, Lúcio’s cutting-edge Sonic Amplifier buffets enemies with projectiles and knocks foes back with blasts of sound. His songs can both heal his team or boost their movement speed, and he can switch between tracks on the fly.
Mercy, Mercy’s Valkyrie Suit helps keep her close to teammates like a guardian angel; healing, resurrecting or strengthening them with the beams emanating from her Caduceus Staff.
Symmetra, Symmetra utilizes her light-bending Photon Projector to dispatch adversaries, shield her associates, construct teleportation pads and deploy particle-blasting Sentry Turrets.
Zenyatta, Zenyatta calls upon orbs of harmony and discord to heal his teammates and weaken his opponents, all while pursuing a transcendent state of immunity to damage.
There you have it, the compiled list of all 21 Overwatch characters as models for the tabletop equivalent. We hope you enjoyed this read and someday hope to see them on the table in the near future. If you're interested in Overwatch and likewise have ideas to bring it to the tabletop, please comment below your ideas on rule sets and scenarios.
I would personally like to thank @Brennon, @Mage & @Gazky for their valiant help on finding the best models for these characters.
I hope you enjoy Overwatch as much as I will, releasing tomorrow 24th May 2016.
Are there any models you think are better suited?

Impressive miniature and industry knowledge in this list ! 🙂
I think I’m in love with D. Va and that mech. 😀 Makes sense, I’ve been on something of a mech kick lately.
As soon as the open Beta came out, I turned to my wife and said… this is infinity on the PC… like they were ripping off IP from everywhere… not like Blizz havent done that before…
😀 staying up late tonight for launch!!
…so is Jamie! He has even been out and bought supplies.
should use the jsa lady from the dire foes pack and use the wings from current suggested model also tracer could be uxia mcneil model with a modding
Am I the only person who has no idea what this is?
You are not alone sir.
nope lol
Not a clue
It’s based on a game called ‘team fortress’ – Jamie is planning on staying-up to play it when it goes live. Check it out, i’m down with the kids!
I have seen that not played the game, good to see you on the mend @unclejimmy
Watch this.. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sB5zlHMsM7k
..and this.. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U130wnpi-C0
..and then this.. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ09xdxzIJQ
.find yourself thinking “Huh. I wonder when this is out at the cinema?”
..then realise they went to all this effort to characteruse a bunch of online shooter characters who are trapped in a MOBA.. so all those rivalries and back story? Totally irrelevant.
Then, if you are so inclined, wait for a game that actually makes a good use of this new IP 😉
Characterise. Stupid autocorrect
What is a MOBA?
Multiplayer Online Battle Arena
Like Dota, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm. it’s a bit like any skirmish game on tabletop.
Muliplayer Online Battle Arena (League of Legends is probably the most well known example) although I suppose I’m being a bit unfair. Overwatch is really one of the biggest-budget titles in the emerging “Hero Shooter” genre. Think.. a team deathmatch first person shooter but instead of customisable classes there is a character roster to pick from and those characters are not unique per game (thus each team can have a Tracer (Hero) and a Widowmaker (Villain) who might be shooting at another Tracer and Widowmaker). There are no weapons to pick up.. each character is locked in to their starting… Read more »
It’s pretty much built from the ground up as an eSports title. Nothing inherently wrong with that but it seems like such a waste of some perfectly good lore building as established in the cinematics 🙂
except this isn’t a moba.
Battleborn is closer to a ‘first person’ moba.
This one is a simple class based team game, except instead of classes you’ve got multiple heroes each with their own variant of the 4 core roles (offense, defense, tank and support).
Definition of ‘moba’ :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplayer_online_battle_arena
There is no core to destroy.
There is only a single ‘super’ skill that needs recharging before you can use it.
there was a boardgame kickstarter about pirates that was a bit like that.
At least one more baffled, here.
Nope. I too have absolutely no clue. I do know that the Wild West Exodus miniatures are noticeably out of scale with Infinity though
That’s not to undermine the work that @lancorz has obviously put into finding proxies for all the characters in the pictures
Thanks dude 🙂 I had some help from the community too!
Why just dont say : Fuck (enter search engine of choice here)
Because I wasn’t asking what it was. I was asking how out of touch I was.
@redben : I’m usually quite out of touch with the world of tabletop gaming, so I know the feeling all too well. Heck, the recent Battlegroup article is just one example of me discovering yet another thing that became more interesting once someone explained what made it fun for them. @yoshi : there’s no amount of searching that can ever tell outsiders what makes anything interesting. Few articles ever touch on how these games appear to new people (which is why Nintendo managed to be so successful with the Wii as they focused on the non geek audience … ).… Read more »
I’d seen a few mentions of Overwatch pop up on my FB news feed, including a mock-up of a permission slip to miss school to play it. Then this article seemed to assume that everyone would know what it was, much as you wouldn’t explain what 40K was as everyone here should know what it is. I could figure out it was a computer game from reading the article but beyond that I had no idea what it was and the whole thing left me wondering if there was some massive geek cultural event happening that only I was oblivious… Read more »
@redben : I agree that this article does make a few too many assumptions. The thing is that Blizzard is such an insanely successful publisher/developer with a good reputation that isn’t easily damaged despite the fact that they’re aligned with the #1 Satan of publishing (Activision). They are like GW without the bad rep in relation in the (computer/pc)gaming industry. They’re still supporting the original Star Craft release, which is being used in ‘professional’ gaming (I refuse to call it ‘e-sports’ … ). That’s like GW still supporting the Rogue Trader edition of 40k… They could have released something like… Read more »
@Redben @Limburger I’ll make sure next time to try and write more to introduce the game, it was fun working with the community to find the sculpts for the characters and my limited time resulted in less writing.
Plus I was always a better designer than a writer, I’m still happy with the result. 🙂
No need to apologise. I’m not complaining that there should have been more detail 🙂 Now World of Warcraft I am aware of, @limburger. It was launched around the time our weekly CCG pub meet was drifting away from CCGs and everyone but me got heavily into it. It meant the pub meets then consisted of a lot of WoW chat. 40 person raids, grinding up levels, needing to be online at specific times every week, it all sounded like an Orwellian nightmare to me but they seemed to like it. Well, apart from the three people who wound up… Read more »
I think the Infinity ALEPH Naga sniper is a waaaay better choice for Widowmaker.

Holy cow, this is awesome. I just watched the animated short films and boy, I do hope Blizzard finally goes into the movie making business.
Damn, they already with the Warcraft movie, don´t they? So please some more of this Overwatch stuff, too, please.
yeah, their intro movies for each and every game are easily as good as Pixars’
I kind of wished they did tell a bit of a story in overwatch though, because that was a huge waste of resources for a multiplayer only game in which you only ever shoot at each other.
Heck, the trailers imply there are ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys’, but the average team has a mix of both. It would have been kind of impossible to balance though …
oh … and the madness didn’t stop at the trailers.
They’ve also commisioned a few gigantic statues :

There are not enough words to say how much “YES” this is.
Winston looks great sounds like an interesting game.
I really love that the threads are turning into features that is really cool 😀
The game looks like a lot of fun from the footage I’ve seen of it. There was a nice piece about it on Sky News also, of all places.
Haha nice work on the matchups! The games pretty fun, will grab a copy…once the price drops 😉
Honestly, I think it would have been pretty easy to just find an Infinity model for nearly all of the characters, so some kudos should go for finding models from other ranges. WRT Overwatch, I think Blizzard are just surprised with the generally positive response and weren’t actually expecting it to be as popular as it seems to be; last night there was a twitch broadcaster with 100k+ viewers; they had 9+ million try out the beta (which was pretty much the full game). Watching some of the interviewers, a single player mode and expanding upon the story are all… Read more »
Well, i think i have the best McCree 😀 http://klukvaminiatures.nethouse.ru/products/23542302
not even close, even once.
Excellent post, you should do that more often!
I have better suggestions for widowmaker: Raging Heroes Mortaria

for Zarya: Dark Age Ol’ Ma

I’ve got a far better Tracer too:
Anima Tactics Alessa Raincross
http://atoracle.wikidot.com/en-alessa-raincross
By the way, Anima Tactics minis have this Anime look that makes them good choices for Overwatch proxies.
Please update the Tracer model, yours do not look like the character at all…
Ok so we’ve got a few sources to use for the characters in the game.
Are there any skirmish level wargames that can replicate what this game does ?
Keep in mind that killing the enemy doesn’t result in your team winning the game.
Game types :
– payload : escort an autonomous transport from it’s starting location near the enemy deployment zone to yours
– POINT CAPTURE : capture and hold the enemy objectives by the end of the game
