The Age Of Sigmar Waaagh! Begins With New Orruks
April 23, 2016 by brennon
Age of Sigmar is about to be enveloped in a wave of destruction at the hands of the Orruks from Games Workshop who are now storming into their new Fantasy world to make it their own.
We're going to be showing off loads of the new releases here below so let's get stuck in...
Monstrous Characters
We kick things off with some rather awesome looking characters for the Orruks. Leading the way we have the Megaboss on Maw-krusha. You can also check out a painting video showing off how to paint him above.
This model can also be assembled using the components within to represent one of the special characters from the Orruk army list - Gordrakk, the Fist of Gork.
I really like these miniatures. While a lot of people have been rather marmite over the Orruk release it seems like a lot of people have been drawn to this miniature in particular. I think the creature design for the Maw-krusha is great and the rider isn't positioned too stupidly either which is great.
Following in his (very big) footsteps we also have a Megaboss on foot with the skull of some ancient beast strapped to his shoulder.
As I've said before in other pieces on the Orruks I think that the yellow armour doesn't do these models any favour. It's hard to know what colour they should have gone for instead but I think yellow will look too clashing against the likes of the Stormcast Eternals in their 'official' range.
Either way I think the model for the Megaboss is another hit for me - a big thumbs up. I'd paint him in battered iron colours with splatters of red paint (or blood) over his armour.
We now move towards the eldritch with some of their releases including the Weirdnob Shaman.
This is another of the miniatures which has really grabbed peoples attention. I think the fact that it's gone for the utterly mad angle that draws people to it. I like the pose, as if he is about to summon some huge spell onto the tabletop, and the power puffing from the top of his staff.
The Warchanter seems to be drawing on some magical energy too.
He will be pounding those big bones on the faces of his enemies and anything he can find in order to drum his Orruk brothers into a rage. I love the idea that this isn't your typical musician and instead he's a very dangerous and brutal individual in combat. His drums are the bodies of his enemies.
I think you'll agree this is a rather neat new range of characters for Age of Sigmar.
Warriors Of The Waaaagh
Following their leaders into battle we have some new units too for the Orruks. We start things off with what would once have been known as Boar Boyz and are now the Gore-Gruntaz.
These are your heavy cavalry option for your games with their big beasts armed to the teeth (quite literally) with big jutting bits of iron. I think these once again are a rather fun looking unit and while I don't overly like the actual creatures faces (apart from the main leader model) the riders look ace.
Brutes are also joining in the clash of arms. These are the biggest and baddest Orruks in your army.
Paint these guys up in rusted iron with blood splattered over their armour and you'd probably have a lot more people looking to pick this army up.
Last but not least we have a repackaged set of Black Orcs which are now know as Ardboys.
These warriors will make up the vast majority of your force. To be honest when it comes to a fighting force for the tabletop you can't really go wrong with the brutal talents of these chaps - after all ol' Grimgor was a big fan of them.
Books? Which Orruk Reads Books!?
You can also pick up two tomes that you might consider helpful for running your army or Orruks. First up is Battletome: Ironjawz...
This tells you all about the history of the Ironjawz as a clan and where they are headed as the Waaagh gains strength. You will also find additional Battalion Rules and more for playing with the Ironjawz on the tabletop with specific scenarios and more.
On a larger scale we also have the Grand Alliance: Destruction book which contains all of the Warscrolls for this side of Age of Sigmar.
This includes the likes of Grots (Goblins), Trolls (Troggoths) Giants (Gargants) and Ogres (Gutbusters). Everything has very different names now so it might take a bit of getting used to.
So, with that massive amount of new releases for the Orruks - will you be picking some up?
Drop your thoughts below!

They really shouldn’t of called them “Ardboys”, then again they did name some “Nobs”.
Mega Nobz with massive choppas
Riding large hairy things ?
Oh, I say! Carry on Orking!
Don’t blame GW for that, blame British slang …..
Further to the point people will now have to answer the question “do you have a Weirdnob?” that is only going to be awkward
No no no no no
Could they have made those Orcs look any more as if they are wearing Terminator armour??
Loving the look of the mawkrusha just looks brutal.
The GW naming department is a bit peculiar at the best of times.
I still think this faction would look best transported to 40K. I feel a bit sad that the regular and savage Orks (see, I miss-spell it automatically) are gone completely.
Regular and savage Orcs haven’t gone there still in the destruction book.
Savage orcs are still there.
I get were the are going with having new Orcs so heavily armored. Clearly they want all new AoS models to be as simple as possible to paint and lot of armor helps with that.
So Black Orcs or Ardboys like they are now called are no longer biggest Orcs but are now replaced by Brutes.
well the regular orks look like absolute *beep* imo, and thats not even considering the paintjob. I actually got a better impression of the bigger orks in the blurry images, not too impressed with the usual overdone caddy sharpness of the stuff in these newly released pics.
These are the first orcs I’ve actually liked in decades. The armour is a great design, looking like it’s been roughly beaten out of sheet metal by big hammers. It may look a bit terminatory from the front, but in the 360 degree views it looks very different. These orcs font bother wearing armour on their backs and that front armour is more like giant breast plate with a hole to stick your head through. The design makes total sense to me, given orcs’ inhuman anatomy. It’s like the designers have gone back to the drawing board and asked, “How… Read more »
The models are nice, the Boar heads look a little funny to me with that weird lump of fur underneath but if people bought these I would understand why.
The main reason I don’t like them is they look too 40k to me, but in a parallel universe where 40k doesnt exist I would probably like them. Basically when I see these models I think Futuristic rather than Medieval, but that is also probably the colour scheme at work.
I get what you’re saying, but seeing them painted up all yellow, the old Black Orcs look far more like space marine wannabes to me (like the Imperial Fists have wandered into a hall of mirrors by mistake). It just shows how painting can totally change the look of a miniature. Painted in bare metal, these Brutes would look so much more ‘fantasy’ in my opinion. I really wish that GW would also put up photos of assembled but unpainted minis on their site, the way Forgeworld do. personally, as someone who’s primarily a converter and painter, I go straight… Read more »
Yep I would like to see what you could do with some of these 🙂
Well I’m not really interested in Age of Sigmar or fantasy in general for that matter. So, what I would do with them is turn them into 40k orks 😀
That top image of the leader on his lizard. The yellow armor looks darker and better. It’s the bright yellow that I find hard to look at.
this is what happens when an imperial fist sneaks into the tellyporta with the orks.
Oh, look! Saturday morning cartoons. I’ll stick with KoW and Shieldwolf orcs. Even the EM4 models, at $15 for 50 of them, look better.
*zucht*
They look great definitely wouldn’t do them with yellow armour though.
The Warchanter looks like he’s directing a plane landing
Maybe there’s a Mawcraft Carrier model coming and he’s deck crew.
First orcs from GW that I have liked since… A very long time. Even though the boars look like muppets and the Ardboyz (*snicker*) look like Nono from ulysses 31. I might be picking one or two up (no more than that… at that price, it’d be madness).
+1 for mentioning Ulysses 31. I used to love that cartoon 😀
plus one for Nono but these are the first ork minis I am not looking to get GW has produced. Its certainly a different image
Have just seen the Orruks painted in red armour at Warhammer World store, it’s amazing the difference a paint scheme can make.
The photo’s do not do them justice.
OH NO. The monster is actually kinda bad :s I’m not sure what it was meant to be b doing, but it’s a fail. The Brutes are actually quite good – as predicted when painted black they are very good – note the lack of armour on their backs! It’s far more patchwork, The Yellow paint scheme was a mistake. But £30 for 5? lol. If they were resin models, sure :p Certainly not worth it – they even lack any detail or character to warrant them costing that much (in contrast to other larger models GW have produced). Gore-gruntas… Read more »
There are different pics in the individual products on the GW store in more neutral, older style warhammer schemes and they look pretty decent to be honest.
Does anyone else think the war priest or whatever looks like he is holding two sets of testicles with ghosts floating out of them?
Beaten to death by ghost testicles that would be terrifying.
Public health announcement – if your testicles are elongated to the length of you forearms and/or glowing green then you need to see your Doctor
I really like these Orruk models, at first I didn’t but they have grown on me. I especially like the shaman and warchanter models. The infantry are nice but lMO are too much armour and not enough Orc skin.
I also think the cavalry (like all the post AoS cavalry model releases) will have too similar looking models if you field them in the numbers of which AoS generally expects.
I love these orcs so much, except for the razorgor riders. I don’t understand why GW would ever want to bring back those.
But then I see those prices and realise that GW is a station that I have long since passed. Shame though.
I really quite like the Brutes and the new Warboss, and the riders of those boar things. I really quite dislike the new boar things and the Maw Beast, or whatever it’s called, while having some cool and brutal looking elements over all looks like something that makes no sense.
I could potentially see myself getting a few of these at some point, to add to my 40K ork army. I can’t see myself being tempted back into Warhammer/AoS.
I never liked the posture of the old style GW orcs. The squat legged, butt sticking out, back arched pose made them look like they were twerking. I think these are the very first AoS new releases where I like them better than what they are replacing.
“The squat legged, butt sticking out, back arched pose made them look like they were twerking.”
I’ll never be able to look at GW’s orcs in the same way again…
These make me want to collect a new fantasy force and start playing AOS. They’re very evocative and, like Koraski, I particularly like that they’ve stepped away from the stooped gorilla physique. I’m definitely picking up the Megaboss and Weirdnob to paint, even if I will never play them.
Great! Now I’m going to be starting an orruk force.
I’ve already pulled out some old black orks and savage orks I had and I’m going to re-base in the next few days. Pre-ordered the Alliance book and the Gore-gruntas. Will probably order the Maw crusher too.
I like the Maw Krusha but not the Orc on top. I am still pleased I have switched to KoW. I will keep an eye on the AoS as there might be some good stuff thta can be used in KoW. I think the paint jobs are too yellow and the models will look better in different colours, it will be good to see what people do instead.
Like them, black or red armour will make them look good get rid of that F’n yellow!!!!!!! KoW orcs suck I like the GW!!!!!!!!!
OK, while I don’t like how much they look like their 40k counterparts, I do really like that wyvern.
Its not a Wyvern 😛
It looks like a crossbreed between a Gorilla and an iguana with wings stuck on as an afterthought.
