Games Workshop Celebrate 30 Years Of Space Marines [Updated]
April 4, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop are going to be celebrating thirty years of Space Marines with a new book, Index Astartes, looking back at the history of the Adeptus Astartes in the Warhammer 40,000 world as well as a special miniature which re-imagines the very first incarnation of the Angels of Death...
You'll be able to delve deeper into the history of how they came to be which is always a promising endeavour for anyone who adores background. I really like the old school design of the gun with the masses of baroque-style features.
Update: Store Link has been added to the Games Workshop webstore!
Is it going to be worth snapping one of these up for your collection; maybe you own one of those original Space Marines?

I like them *much* better than the current version 😎
My thoughts exactly. If all Marines looked like this, I’d probably start a marine force..
So many memories in that artwork.
Really like the mini, the pose is especially good.
Its a cool idea, sculpt and homage, and it can be used practically in game by any marine player, but it does seem a little bit underwhelming. I like it, but it isnt worth the hassle of going to GW (travel to Cork or Dublin in my case) and it will most likely be overpriced. More power to whoever decides to get one though.
Aside from a 30th anniversary thing, a Rogue Trader Board game with a bunch of MK6 marine sprues reimagined would be pretty cool.
Sculpt is based on pretty much the first Space marine, technically speaking there was one that came before it, but the second one is more what people would associate with the armour. Nice model, I’ll be getting one for sure.
Really don’t know why you would get down rated for stating historic tidbit, but have a thumbs up from me for good recall
And I don’t know why you would get downvoted for questioning why someone else had been downvoted so have a thumbs up from me.
beakies with aviators, makes me want to create a top gun themed squad 😛
I have… mixed emotions on this. The mini itself is cool, I’d love to have it. The book… I am leaning towards ambivalence. It’s kind of cool, but I’ve been playing 40k so long I know most of that stuff. I still have the original poster of the cut-away Land Raider fiagram from when it was published in White Dwarf.
And 30 years is ok, but why not 25? Then 50? *shrugs*
Nice idea, unfortunately GW executed, yes it was brought up to the high standards of today’s sculpting and casting reality, but the sculpt itself looks dated, kept too many artifacts of 30 years past and not updated them to the modern era.
It’s supposed to look dated. It’s supposed to look like a Space Marine out of the Rogue Trader book. I think they’ve done a great job.
I would rather they had taken the essence of the old mini and brought it at present day, rather than recreating the old mini with present technology.
But that is just my viewpoint.
I’m not sure I understand what you mean by the “essence” the original model. “essence” sounds a bit nebulous. I think they’ve done a great job of capturing the original Rogue Trader space marines, from the pose to the eyes.
Yup if anything they have modernised as the legs were a lot thinner on the original mini’s
An odd complaint. I would have thought the entire idea behind it is a collectible retro looking marine sculpted to modern standards.
I echo the others about it being an odd complaint, sure the Gun looks bonkers but the other bits like the mag locked pistol and combat knife at the back look great, as for the intentionally retro sculpt thats the point, if you want “old” power armour but modern then go buy some mkIII or IV power armour from FW or Betrayal of Calth.
My biggest complaint is the basing of that mini, should be a goblin green rim, with green flock on top, none of the modern brown and gravel look 😛
That’s what bolt guns looked like in 1986!
Gotta love classic Space Marine.
AHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA 25€!!!!
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA
i thought it was for free in the White Dwarf magazine…..
Indeed.
At that price I’d expect 50mm high mini or something worthy of being made a display model… not a single model that’s the same size as the regular variant.
It’s $50 in Australia. Just to keep in theme with the week, I can get an entire starter or sectorial force for Infinity for $49.95. Obscene.
I really dig the marine but that price is a joke.
And why the hell would they make it out of plastic?
Plastic gives them the best profit margin?
it’s just how they do things these days, they’ve pretty much abandoned all other mediums unless you count forgeworld, and I guess it’s not a special enough special edition for them to cast it in Metal like they should.
It might if it was going to be a permanent item and not a special edition thing.
As it stands it’s only going to be a limited run, and injection molds cost a lot of money.
Probably part of why it has such a ridiculous price tag.
That classic Space Marine model awesome looking.
Wow I hadn’t seen the price, foolish me I assumed it was a freebie with a White Dwarf purchase. Ugh.
Celebrating with an 18£ price tag for a single mini … thats a bit like pooping in the perfectly made birthday cake. Its definatly not the price id choose to show appreciation for my faithful fans of 30 years.
Another snub… pass.
I Will Pay gladly 25 euro’s for this beautifull mini. Just pure nostalgia
… and that is why we may never see better models at a better price 🙁
It’s a cool sculpt, but not a $30 + int’l S&H level of cool.
There should be some wholesalers that offer it at a good price right? Kind of
like every other GW product. The shipping is expensive from GW to the US if you go direct.
Lost Patrol, Deathwatch Overkill, Horus Heresy, Deathstorm, etc. all bought at under GW retail cost, I assume this mini will be the same. (Hoping)
I did think it was going to be a larger display model not an actual 28 mm model.
Except a hell of a lot of GW products are ‘direct only’ aka you can’t get it from a wholesaler/other retailer at a discount. As this will only be available for 2 days, I would expect it to be another direct only item.
It might be the nostalgia, but I quite like this.
18 quid for 1 plastic space marine…….
I cant even….
“Haters Gonna Hate”
the earliest Rogue Trader photos have lines of those lads can-canning across green tablecloths 🙂
awww but the book looks class!
Going to have to do it just so I can put it next to my original one and see the difference (apart from my crap paint job from when I was a lot younger!!!). Also interested in the book but that depends on the price. Right hold on, let me drag my body armour out of the garage and chuck my breast plates in……….ok………Given the cost of most single character minis that GW do @£15, I don’t think an extra £3 on top for a limited run is too bad, especially as it needs to recoup the cost of the… Read more »
@brucelea i love doing side by side’s of RT and modern mini’s i think its how thin and proportional :O the RT mini’s look compared to todays space marines…
I sadly missed out on the first RTs but I did get a metal version of the sculpt that was available during their Skullz promotion years ago.
I still have a good mix of all the different metals and box sets in my collection and you’re right some look positively puny in comparison.
wish they had done him as a poseable honour guard
I love this figure. I don’t even mind that it’s plastic – it has somehow managed to get the characterful pose that metal / resin figures seem to manage more easily. It’s not as expensive as some of the other plastic marines they’ve produced in recent years (which doesn’t make it a bargain!!) and I’d be willing to pay it. But how do you buy it? There’s no preorder button on the website. A limited figure comes out the same day as Salute… I’m going to be too busy to go to a GW store!
I think you can buy them online. I’m sure I read that somewhere
That model is absolutely perfect if you ask me (which you didn’t!). A great combination of old and new. I don’t usually go for limited edition models but I’m actually going to try to get two of this one, one to convert a little to be a commander for my 30k Word Bearers and one to paint up as is and put next to my metal original version. Aaaaaaaahhhhh, the nostalgia! 😛
I for one am disappointed, was expecting something much cooler. I for one, won’t be getting one… I’ll be at Salute…
Guess you will be avoiding the forgeworl/gw stand then…
Likely to oggle at the Warlord Titan, not seen that in real life yet.
I rather like it myself but I can’t justify spending that much sadly (I need to save for a new computer anyway)
