Antenocitis Show Off Designs For Their Urban Wargaming Mats
March 3, 2016 by brennon
Antenocitis have been looking at the idea of expanding on this modular idea that everyone is loving right now. This thought process is going into their Urban Gaming Mat which is going to be modular and work with add-ons and more...
The idea is that the roads can be used to join up each section of the mat so that you can make a larger gaming space. There are also logical locations where you can place the buildings and such that they have developed.
I think this is a neat idea and we should see more modular mats like this allowing you to change how the game table looks over time. Mats are great but when they have roads and particular set-ups you can end up just playing on the same tabletops.
What do you think?

nice interesting that the mats can be combined to make a larger playing area.
Gaming mats are something I’ve never bought into but I’ve always wanted to try them out. They seem like a decent option for a cheap surface. Not sure which company to throw my money at yet though.
Best to just go for the design you like the best at the best price, for mouse mat type, quality wise there is nothing to distinguish between them although Tiny Wargames do print onto rubber floor vinyl instead of mousemat.
I dont have a table that is 6×4 so I cant use gaming mats fo big games, so I use Tablescape
I love the idea of modular mats and I love Antenocities Workshop stuff, but I’d prefer modular mats that are made up of smaller sections. I know that this presents more design challenges and can produce more disjointed results, but simply for the variety and storage, I like the 12″x 12″ tile approach. Having to play on a 4’x 4′ table made up of… erm… a 4’x 4′ or at best two mats half the size doesn’t fit in with my plans. Fortunately, my second favourite terrain company, Micro Arts, have got a Kickstarter running for smaller tiles. My self-imposed… Read more »
The only quibble I have with this mat, and I fully understand why for others it might not be an issue, are the colours.
I think I’d have just liked a bit more colour, or have the colours already there, be a bit brighter. The mat seems to make the scenery a bit grimmer as well.
Perhaps I’m being old school in being brought up with the old colourful battlefields you used to get in the old White Dwarf back in the 80’s / 90’s?
I know the BoW guys have mentioned this when making gaming tables: don’t make them too glitzy so that the miniatures remain the stand out feature. So the slightly grim nature of the mats may be for this reason.
I agree. Bright terrain demands bright miniatures, and even if you want all your miniatures to be 90s era GW style (to each their own) I think you end up with a huge explosion in a paint factory look. If you think you may sometimes want darker / drabber miniatures then you need a darker table surface or they’ll be overwhelmed and you’ll lose all the detail. And if you like bright miniatures, they’re going to stand out and look better on a drabber surface. None of which matters if your personal preference is for a bright gaming table of… Read more »
