Games Workshop’s Battle For Vedros Website Pops Up
February 15, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop have popped this new website up onto the world wide web in the form of the Battle For Vedros. This looks like it's going to be a new entry level product for Warhammer 40,000 allowing you to build a force of Space Marines and Orks to duke it out on the tabletop...
The game seems akin to the Assault On Black Reach in terms of content and comes with twenty eight miniatures. Additionally there is a separate paint set which gives you the basic colours in which to paint both of these armies.
Given the design of the box this looks like it could be the set that ends up in toy stores and other outlets as well as within Games Workshop stores. There certainly seems to be a concerted effort on the part of Games Workshop to bring a very quick and easy entry into Warhammer 40,000 to new gamers.
A series of videos on the website also show off how to build, paint and game with the models so that's handy for people getting started with their kids. As we know, Duncan is a good presenter, and clearly demonstrates plenty of skills.
We shall have to see where this builds from here...

This is a super move from GW. Hopefully it will bring in alot of new blood to the hobby in general.
I like alot of the decisions the new management at GW are choosing atm. Great things are a foot.
As i said on the forum thread about this, i really dont see what this offers over the existing starter sets other than its in a box rather than clampack so retailers arnt compelled to give shop space to GW’s racking… if it has some cut down rules then that makes some more sense i guess. As for the website, well i guess GW are trying hard to shake the “white middle class, teenage boy” image the brand has… Any one else getting the cheesy “more fun than it really is” vibe from the action pics used, like the ones… Read more »
I am definitely getting that vibe. Reminds me of all the adverts for board games from when I was a kid. Its a lot less miniatures than Dark Vengeance so assume it is going to be a bit cheaper and aimed at getting new blood into the hobby as opposed to being targeted at exiting players and people who split the sets to sell on eBay. Hopefully some quick start rules will be in there. They are something that is missing from 40k at the moment. Rules being included for all their “new” kid-friendly products is a good thing. As… Read more »
It has a completely unique rules set. Kinda like a 40k lite.
This product range is in now way, shape or form, marketede at the established hobbyist. It is all bout the complete newbie.
Simpler models, a 40k light rules set, all the paints, brushes and glue you need in the box, a low price tag and all the contents in the box aimed at someone who has never had any contact with mini painting and gaming.
So alot of difference.
@nosebiter im on about the paints and glue included starter set which comes in a clam pack, already available in ork, chaos and marine veriety, which are the same click fit mini’s as these look to be, which are also marketed at the newb, the only difference is the packaging and quantity of mini’s in the box, according to the GW sales rep i just spoke too…
It looks like something that can go back onto the shelves of Hobbycraft with the airfix kits.
It does indeed. A good move IMO.
Im betting argos will be carrying this range, like they used to with 2nd ed 40k whfb, wh:quest and necromunda, especially after the sales rush they had with offers on xwing…
Revell has been doing entry level plastic kits for ages now (it’s almost gotten to the point that the ‘real’ stuff is hard to get :()
GW should have done this decades ago …
A hobby as complex as miniature wargaming needs entry level starter sets that don’t scare new customers.
Now if only they’d do this in Europe too as the site appears to be aimed at the USA/Canada only at the moment.
Given the fact you don’t get the error page if you change the language code in the url it implies that the text is just awaiting translation:
http://www.games-workshop.com/es-ES/Vedros <– this will be the spanish version
http://www.games-workshop.com/de-DE/Vedros <– this will be the germanversion
http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GBVedros <– this is the UK version
Think in terms of business strategy this is their answer to x-wing, and are clearly trying to get into toy shop territory, interesting move post kirby, guess they have admitted they are a toy company after all!
I wanted to say “what translation for the UK version?” … but then I remembered that American and British are two different languages. 😉
I forgot that the ‘hack’ could have worked :

The webshop itself doesn’t show the products in the Vedros range though.
An interesting move by Workshop. Very akin to the old Airfix ethos when I was a kid – give the customer everything they need in one box to get started and let them get sucked in to the hobby. I notice on the site that it uses verbiage which appeals very much to kids and teenagers – the word COLLECT stands out a mile. So, as Nosebiter says above, pretty much aimed at newbies and with limited appeal to the old-guard. I’d be interested to see where this ends up retailer-wise – just in mainstream gaming stores or in the… Read more »
Toy’r us used to carry GW, i bought my 2nd ed 40k starter box in one!
It always shocks me the incredible stupidity of GW. It is never ending. Even when something like this *sounds* like a good idea (some of those “Start Playing” sets save you like 50% of the retail – and THAT’S at retail… and well done for GW for doing it) you have to step back and realise that once your average guy picks up these cool starter sets he will have no options afterwards because GW’s prices are so damn high – he won’t even be able to bulk his (or her) army up in size because GW have gone out… Read more »
See start an army box they released at start of january, thats the upgrade path here,
If its successfull the range will be expanded, to include chaos, as they already have snap fit cultists and CSM, and if the rules are cut down version of 40k then HQ choices etc, will probably not be mandatory like in 2nd edition
They provide an expansion kit for each of the game starter factions which seem quite good for AoS – slightly meh for 40K
They aren’t “flaws” … they are simply decisions to drive sales. Fans of GW always see things only from the consumer perspective. Look man as a “fan” I agree with you and I have been making these same lamentations for years. But GW is a publicly traded company with a duty to serve its shareholders, first and foremost. One can make arguments about serving customers does serve shareholders, yada yada … but if profits are down … stock price goes down … stock price goes down shareholders are not being served. It is that simple. GW has to continuously drive… Read more »
@lordofexcess – It is a flaw if greed drives customers away faster than rising sales to those remaining. And although GW aren’t anywhere near collapse, or even of making a loss, their declining market share year on year, and several of their new business strategies suggest that they realise that they’ve made mistakes. If customers think battalion boxes aren’t a good deal and so don’t buy them, GW (and it’s shareholders) haven’t gained if those customers don’t buy something else from them instead. If enough customers do what you’ve done and become customers of a competitor then those ‘profitable’ boxes… Read more »
Yeah agreed, prices are not anchored in reality, perhaps it makes sense in the warp. I would hope they price this box soundly to make it a truly attractive starter, but you never know with GW. They just cant seem to help themselves with the pricing … insane web bundles is what awaits the new blood introduced to this new website, making sure it ends and begins with the starter.
This is a smart move and I’ve never considered it before, makes me interested getting into 40k. I had hopes for the AOS but the Sig-marines put me off…
I am all for this, entry level gaming from the market leader. I know we should all support the smaller developers, and I, like I’m certain most users here do – but how many of us came to the hobby via GW in the early days? Love them or loath them they have an IP that ticks all the boxes for kids (as well as adults now – gulp) and if that boosts their coffers – and more importantly gets kids into table gaming then I am all for it. My son gravitates to the computer to play all manner… Read more »
So they brought back molds from Battle for the Black Reach starter from 5th edition for this one.
Why not? This is an entry level product aimed at young kids that’ve never had any contact with the hobby before. They’re not trying to sell them to anyone that’s been around since 5th edition so it’s a simple move to keep costs down.
will be handy to get things that people have missed if they want the army to be uniform.
I like this idea, clearly aimed at getting people into the hobby. In my opinion the 2nd edition of 40k was the best released. Lots of Gretchin and a few orks vs 2 tactical marine squads. The game was balanced and genuine tactics could be used. Nowadays 40k “proper” seems a very daunting game to get into and more about picking a “broken list” with ridiculous combos of effects than actual tactics on the battlefield. If I was someone getting into the hobby I would want to play a game that was FUN and tactical rather than one where I… Read more »
