Delve Into Dothraki Blood Magic With A Game Of Thrones: The Card Game
January 6, 2016 by brennon
A Game Of Thrones: The Card Game 2nd Edition is a fantastic card game from Fantasy Flight and I've been playing it nearly every day for the past week! So, seeing a new Chapter Pack from the end of the first cycle has filled me with glee. Take a look at Calm Over Westeros...
In this pack we follow the story as Tyrion Lannister comes to the Eyrie while over the sea Khal Drogo is at the mercy of a practitioner of Blood Magic. The way in which these different packs tell the story of A Game Of Thrones has been great AND we get a whole bunch of awesome cards too.
The Starks are getting some brutal military power in the shape of Greatjon and his warband who gain extra strength for the amount of plots in your used pile (the more turns you play the stronger they become). We also mentioned the deadly blood magic practised by Mirri Maz Duur...
Her ability is great for picking out those characters that you think deserve to die very quickly indeed. Because of her strength of five she will be drawing in more expensive characters and can pick and choose if she wants to claim power, cards from the opponents hand or just kill them outright.
With her and the Plaza of Punishment (kills low strength characters) you have a potent combination for the Targaryens.
Have you been playing this game?

This has rapidly become my favourite card game. Played my second tournament at the weekend and went 3-1 with Targ Fealty. I’m looking forward to adding The Golden Crown to Dracarys once Road to Winterfell hits.
Night’s Watch with Banner of the Wolf for me with my second ‘deck’ as Targaryen Fealty. Targaryen is a lot more competitive but Night’s Watch is a rather interesting puzzle for the opponent to solve.
Really looking forward to doing a full on ‘war’ deck with armies and knights when the Stark Deluxe box comes out.
BoW Ben
It’s certainly more competitive than NW, though I don’t think there’s a big gap between the best and worst decks in the game (at least for now and not counting some obviously useless decks like anything which banners Targ). I’m impressed by just how balanced the game is considering how many decks there are.
For sure – I ended up getting two core sets in the end to make up the NW+BotW Deck. I have been seriously considering a third haha.
I think the first tournament near me is at the beginning of February so I’m hoping to go to that.
What I really like about the various faction is that they all play like their houses would do.
Been really tempted to try a themed ‘Streets of King’s Landing’ deck which is so chock full of ambushes and horrible intrigue effects that you would never want to visit haha.
It didn’t take me long to get to three sets. I’m at the point where I’m seriously considering a fourth to make it easier to run multiple decks. It does do an excellent job of capturing the theme. It’s not an easy task to balance game design with theme but FFG have nailed it.
Played tournament number three today. Went 3-1 and lost to a NW Fealty deck which went 4-0. So I think it’s fair to say that NW are now the top deck lol. Getting to the first challenges phase and seeing The Wall, the Iron Throne, Benjen, and a bunch of other rangers pretty much did for me in that game.
Those look good.
