Mantic Talk The Walking Dead: All Out War Miniatures Game
January 5, 2016 by brennon
Update!
It looks like we were right and there is indeed going to be a The Walking Dead: All Out War coming out from (you guessed it) Mantic Games! They make some great zombies so it certainly makes sense that they would be the ones to pick up the license for this property.
Here's the official press release from Mantic Games...
"The Walking Dead: All Out War will be set in the engaging and immersive post-apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead comic series. Having the comic license gives us far more freedom to reproduce from all the rich and evocative artwork, and over 149 issues of the comics.
This offered the biggest choice of factions and characters – in fact the widest scope possible to explore the setting and heroes. Finally the comic license also gives us direct access to the Skybound team, and insight into the world by the people who actually created it! We will bring the pages to life with fantastic models that will cry out to be painted, slick game play and it’ll all be part of an awesomely fun gaming experience."
The Walking Dead: All Out War Newsletter
Through our Tips Off System (which you can use yourself to send us news that you might think we want to know about!) we received these two images of some rather ace artwork and some models which matched them exceptionally well. Do we have a new Zombie game coming to the tabletop soon?
First off this is the artwork we had through with the mysterious title of 'Mohawk Zombie'. Once we saw this however we had to start thinking about the art style and we believe there could be a new The Walking Dead game on the way from someone!
Then this image was also attached to the Tip Off which shows the same Mohawk Zombie in model form. Considering the success of The Walking Dead on television it would make sense for there to be a tabletop game coming in the future. We've seen board games and card games but a full on miniatures game would be awesome.
If this is the case (and not just some random zombies) we could be seeing great multi-part zombie kits (it looks 28mm too!) and ones for survivors too. I would really love to see Clem and Lee bought to life from The Walking Dead Telltale Game.
Considering the art style what do you think the game could be AND who is going to be behind it?

Hmm, going off both the sculpting and painting style I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a new Mantic venture- and they do have a proven pedigree in zombie minis at 28mm…
The artwork is from TWD so either this is a licensed line or someone will be getting a C&D lol
Emphasis on the ‘is’, as in you were right to identify it as that style because it’s taken straight from the comic.
Yes, I heard Mantic had picked up a new licence, and they love zombies.
I think the fact that this is on the main part of the page, as opposed to down the side like the other stories (including the potentially big new faction for gw and first shots of new blood bowl) all but guarentee that this is the new mantic property/kickstarer
You’re probably right.
i’ve not heard anything about this big new faction for gw, could you please explain more?
@dunham99 fyreslayers dwarf mercs for AoS who fight for ur-gold
oh ok those guys. cheers dude
Very cool if true, but Mantic will have to up their game in the variety department. The recent space zombies were cool if you had.. 10 of them, but making 30 or more was depressing even WITH the possibility of part swaps from other Mantic minis (e.g. their fantasy zombies, Corp troopers and the Stage 3 Plague guys).
Come to think of it, wasn’t there going to be a rule set for Z-Clipz? After all Studio Minis have made a pretty good name for themselves, quality wise, for the zombie and survivor minis!
Was just asked on Sunday to help playtest a new Zombie game for a local company that’s made its name doing Zombie figures…
Oh and it’s not Mantic.
Wooh! This is almost as exciting as that kickstarter for a new 15mm Imperial Roman range of figs.
BTW-that horse is dead. Has been for some time.
If this is Mantic then it’ll be to Dungeon Siege what Mars Attacks is to Deadzone. The obvious way to play zombie survaval horror miniatures combat is in the vein of Space Hulk or Hero Quest. Go in as a squad, get the supplies, avoid/kill the monsters, and get out alive. The added advantage here is that zombies are inherently stupid and can be played by a deck of cards or a logic path, allowing the zombies to run without a human overlord so everyone can play their own survivor. I can see it having an inbuilt narative campaign, and… Read more »
I am not sure about the game being limited. The Mantic site talked about being able to scale up from 10 zombies so I wonder if they are looking at starting small and then making a larger game.
The figures look nice enough..
If it’s based on The Walking Dead and/ of involves plastic Zeds I’m likely to be tempted 😎
There’s already a FB group up and running for a Mantic TWD game. Folks don’t like to hang about lol
yea its mantic
I love The Walking Dead show although I haven’t read the comics because comics aren’t my thing. A tabletop miniatures game probably won’t be my thing either. There’s a few possibly interesting concepts that might sway me; for example a skirmish game where each player controls a group of survivors battling over resources whilst also avoiding zombies that are attracted to noise like gunfire. But mostly I’d say TWD isn’t a licence I am particularly excited to see brought to the tabletop. As an IP it doesn’t have anything that makes it stand out from other zombie apocalypse settings. It… Read more »
Well whoever is making it they need to shut up and take my money already!
Yep, Mantic just changed their facbook profile confirming it 5 mins ago.
Subject to the usual concerns about materials. I’m just not buying another massive box of restic. Sorry to be negative but life’s too damn short.
I’m slogging through the Deadzone 2 player set right now and I would have to agree, although I thought Mantic was heading away from that.
It’s more likely to be PVC I reckon. That’s what Dungeon Saga was and I believe that some of the Warpath and Deadzone stuff is too
Their materials have got better. Recent Dreadball stuff is a world away from the older stuff; but it’s still a world away from anything I want to clean up and put paint on.
I don’t have any issue with their materials, generally (although their Dungeon Saga resin models were shocking)
Sorry, but a Zombie skirmish game Sounds kinda boring. Zombies vs. humans, humans vs. Zombies?
zombies vs zombies? eh? options are starting to open up
So zombies fight other zombies? I did not know that.
Guess I’m old school, braaaains and so on. 😉
Someone once told me that a minis game needs at least four factions to be a properly playable game. As that person was Ronnie Renton, I suspect there’ll be more than just zombies and humans. It may be that factions are drawn out of the source material, such as Rick’s group, Woodbury, Alexandria, Hilltop, Saviours, and I’ll etc. at that point for fear of spoilers lol.
Doesn’t Mars Attacks only have 2 factions?
Isn’t that a boardgame?
I would argue that it is as much a miniatures game as Dreadball and Deadzone
DreadBall is definitely a boardgame. Deadzone occupies a weird twilight zone between the two.
The magic number of needed factions for a miniatures game is six.
I had taken ‘The Walking Dead Miniatures Game’ to mean this was going to be a proper minis game, though as there already is a TWD boardgame, it might be called TWDMG to differentiate it from that, whilst still being a Mars Attacks-style game. Judging from the subsequent Skybound press release it seems that it’s to be a humans v humans game, though, rather than a zombies v humans game.
It’s Humans vs Zombies but Humans vs Humans vs Zombies too! 😉
I’ve tested it with Mantic Team few weeks ago, and the system is pretty cool, quick and furious!
A real tabletop game (not a boardgame), with many items, weapons and tactical challenges.
I think the possibilities with TWD is really great. I can’t wait to create my own TWD table with buildings and everything ^_^
I’ve seen the minis (and touched them ^_^), and I’ve loved them! They respect the heroes of the books.
so this is just the comics? not the tv show?
When it comes to being licensed, IPs in different media are different entities. So GW has the license for the LotR/Hobbit movies and Mithril for the books. In this case, it seems like Mantic have the license for the comic. Given the problems Prodos have had with AvP, I think I’d much rather just have to deal with the small group of people who make the comic, than with AMC.
Having watched the interview with John Paul Brisigotti where he talks about his involvement with the Lird of the Rings game I’m not sure Mantic are quite ready for that yet, not without some serious changes. However their cartoony style should fit well with the comic book.
I shall have a mini of Maggie and I shall paint it and hug it and carry it round in my top pocket because I love Lauren Cohan.
Zombies might not be my cup of tea unless part of fantasy undead army but I must admit that those do look nice.
Now I’m definitely in.
I got in to the Battle Systems Kickstarter at a good time! I’m not too worried about the materials they make the miniatures from as long as you can get the rules at a good price.
Oh, and the Waking Dead site has more details: http://www.thewalkingdead.com/a-walking-dead-miniatures-game-is-coming/ “Set to release towards the end of 2016, The Walking Dead Miniatures Game will be a tactical, two-player game set in the walker-strewn Atlanta cityscape, with each player controlling a small band of human survivors vying to achieve dominance. It can also be played solo thanks to an AI system developed specifically for this game to ensure walker behaviour is menacingly authentic. Featuring stunningly detailed plastic miniatures that capture comic accurate likenesses and poses, the gameplay will recreate the desperate struggle for survival that makes the series so popular. With… Read more »
I personally find the modern zombie genre to be terribly boring. Unfortunately it’s so damn popular that my game group will want to play this game non stop.
Most One Direction fans do so you’re not on your own. Nooch.
As long as they make a great wheel of cheese I be happy… All my Z Nation needs…!!!!
At least Mantic will release this in time, unlike Robotech and the problems with A Vs P…. But it needs a campaign system, travelling and bases.
well this is probably a kickstarter I’ll go heavily in on…
