Tale Of Four Gamers (Soviets): Game Two Catch-Up!

We're back with the Soviet players at the Boot Camp to have a chat about how they are finding playing with their choppers.

The HINDS are some nasty pieces of kit!

I understand were oriskany are coming from, but I have always viewed wargaming abstractly. A game round do not nessecerly represent a fixed amount of time etc.
My favourite historical game By Fire and Sword have amunition counting but it is abstracted as well.
The long and short of it if I am playing a Batalion siezed game I do not want to keep track of every anti tank round my platoons use. That is what i have officers for^^.

The party approves of superior communist magic missles over capitalist pigdog real missiles.

What points values are these games running at?

As we were just learning the ropes we tried to keep it around 50 points. The Soviets I used had 9 T72s and a command tank (total of 10 tanks) for 47pts and 2 hinds for 5pts. The US had a combat team (2 M1s) for 16pts, 3 M1s for 24pts, 2 Cobras for 7pts and 1 mech M113 platoon (4 M113s) for 6pts. So pretty balanced apart from the Soviets had little to deal with infantry in buildings, which was really annoying once Mick realised!!!

2 Hinds for 5 points? Wow, I need to go look at their armament card because that seems way underpriced. (Of course, having only seen the game vicariously it might be right!)

I’m the one in the blue and white striped soviet shirt in the video so I hope I’m right or all the fun I’ve been having is just a dream! If so, well that sucks!! 🙁

Hinds sound pretty fun to play with.

Hmm, Hinds sound overpowered with the unlimited shots. OTOH, not sure I wanna track ammo expenditures either.

Hinds are supposed to be one of the faster helicopters for the time. Is there anything to reflect that in the game or is the helicopter’ speed another thing that is abstracted like all the movement rates in FoW?

brucelea

The speed is unlimited so you can hop about the board as you like. A key thing to do with your AA will be positioning it so that you restrict this movement but for now (as we were given no real AA) we have had free reign.

Interesting. Sort of like air support from Squad Leader… Where does it go? Anywhere it wants to… it’s a freaking plane!

Anywhere it wants to go . . . except within 8 inches of a Cobra’s minigun. 😀 😀 😀

That way lies the dark side, and many burning wrecks!!!

brucelea

I think that might be on the way tomorrow @zorg.

Helis share the same.speed that is Unlimited, cobra are slight more vulnerable but they are on 4+ and 2ith hunter killer rules they will take concealment for every tall terrain within 4″, also, if they don’t shot they are considered GTG, I can assure you that if you combine this things with the new movement orders available for all units, cobra would hecame a lot more attractive!

The one rule we’ve seen that seems to hinder the Cobra a little is that they can’t move and shoot TOWS in the same turn. This compensates a little for their deadly “hunter killer” rule where they hide behind buildings and make pop-up attacks.

I’m sure later versions, where the Cobras are armed with Hellfires instead of older TOWs, and the Apaches come in with their “longbow” mast-mounted targeting suites . . . these will get even deadlier.

I am really glad they came out with this model. I am hoping it will make people at the gaming store I go to become very interested in this game.

You know what I’m thinking of with all this talk of helicopters? Harriers. Lots and lots of Harriers.

Oooo . . . I didn’t even think of that. US Marine Corps, baby! 😀 We’ve already got the Cobras!
