We get stuck into some more kit chat with Lewis who has been bringing the spirit of the Soviet nation to our Boot Camp.
We're getting into specifics about the equipment that the soldiers would be wearing at the time.

I would not like to strap a “webbing backpack” of in combat. I would just have it on an hope there would be no CQB. I admire the adaptbaility of the soldiers to modify such a horrible kit to make it work.
The cleaning kit pouche is great though.
Even though it is from the ‘eighties’ it looks so primitive when you compare it to modern stuff.
The amount of skin I lost from knees and elbows – we never had pads! Look forward to the next part,

Soldiers of every nation have modified gear in the field to suit and this is screaming to be altered. Very cool though to see it explained in detail as I had never considered the webbing and pack was one piece. 😛

Wow, that stuff is primitive compared to the standard US kit at the time. Our stuff was all nylon with Alice clips and quick release snaps.
British webbing from that period was worse, it’s was the canvas stuff, that when wet became really heavy and rubbed your skin raw…awful bloody stuff….I think was called the 59 pattern webbing and yes 59 was the year…..my webbing that was issue to me really didn’t fit together very well and had to be taped up in places….
That doesn’t look like it would be fun to wear for extended periods of time.

I’m more familiar with the DDR’s NVA’s kit. It’s surprising how different another Warsaw Pact country’s kit was..
The same goes for TO&Es as well. Very different solutions even when using similar equipment.
Would really love more solid intel on other warpac nations, which is often hard to come by.
didn’t look comfortable to wear, & no quick way to get it off if you need to.
Practical? Yes and no. But it’s surprisingly comfortable to wear.
