Sword & Spear 2nd Edition Rules Out End Of November
November 11, 2015 by brennon
Great Escape Games have opened up pre-orders for the 2nd Edition of Sword & Spear which will be available at the end of November. This is a rules set for playing out both Ancient and Medieval battles and shines when you're looking at multiplayer games...
More on the game rules...
"Sword & Spear is a set of wargames rules for large battles set in the Ancients & Medieval period. They are suitable for any scale figures and any basing standard. The only requirement is that figures are organised into units of equal frontage. A typical game consists of about twelve units on each side and games take around two to three hours.
The rules are designed from a top-down perspective, focusing on outcomes rather than detail."
The game features a dice allocation system which seems similar to the one used in SAGA where a unit moves, shoots and fights all in one go before moving onto the next one. However, there is no direct turn structure so battles appear to flow a bit more naturally on the tabletop.
The rules are also very simple and the designer has said that while to begin with you might need to refer to the play sheet you will eventually be gaming without any aids whatsoever.
I'm interested to hear more on how this plays!

Its an interesting system
Its an interesting system and quite a bit different in regards to unit activation and combat and it does take a while to get the hang of it
As far as I know 2nd edition is just a rewrite of the army lists as there were a few problems over points costs of units in the first edition
There is a pretty decent forum online as well

All in its a game that really makes you think
I’ve been watching The Last Kingdom and have been looking on line for a rules set to fight larger scale battles between Vikings and Saxons. I haven’t found much, but this looks like it might fit the bill.
L’art De Guerre is meant to be good. Couple of friends have played it and have said it plays well
I’ve played S&S 1st edition a couple of times and I’ve enjoyed every play. The dice system for activation is a little like Bolt Action but there’s still an element of unpredictability which really adds to the game (I had a turn where I had four dice but rolled so poorly none of my elite chariots could move).
I’m trying L’Art this weekend and I’m really looking forward to that too.
With both S&S and l’,art we have drifted away from Hail Ceaser. It just took too much effort to make it feel right
S&S feels a bit like Armati in the way it plays
@torros: I’ll have to take a look at L’art De Guerre. Thanks for the suggestion.
No worries I haven’t played it yet . You could try Dux Belleroum as well which covers from the end of Rome to the Normans invasion. You can make it as realistic or cinematic as you like
They are available from Osprey

Please let us know how you get on
