Lords Atop Mighty Beasts & Many Monsters Fight Their Way Into Kings Of War
November 1, 2015 by brennon
Mantic Games have headed back to the mass battle world of Kings of War after the addition of Uncharted Empires to their range with a selection of new characters and monsters too...
Mighty Lords
The first of these mighty lords brings a massive dragon to the tabletop. The Elf Dragon Kindred Lord is a rather powerful looking warrior atop a huge drake that might have sprung from the depths of a dungeon. This is certainly a big step up from their previous dragons...
Following on from that with an alternative kit we have the Abyssal Dwarf Iron Caster on Great Winged Halfbreed. As you can see it uses the same body as the dragon but swaps out the head for something a bit more Babylonian.
I think both of the mounts look great and while I do quite like the riders I'm not blow away by them. I'd probably be alright with just having the two big monsters on my painting table sans riders!
Last but not least in terms of characters we have the Orc Godspeaker...
"Orcs are elemental and instinctive users of magic, with little of the finesse or nuance of the magic users of other races. Perhaps unsurprisingly, their main obsession is with using magic for destruction, with a particular fascination for fire and explosions.
Orc Shamans are often unhinged and unbalanced, but most Warlords calculate that it is worth the risk to use them."
I think this is a great looking character model that isn't too over the top and yet you can see him standing out amidst an army on the tabletop. His alternative sculpt has him with a helmeted head and an open hand but I think this head is the better of the two.
Monstrous Hunters & The Undead
Following in the footsteps of other superb Ogre models we also have the Ogre Hunters who will be out there bringing down big beasts for the tribe...
I think these are neat, all coated in furs and with a Neanderthal look to them from being stuck out there in the middle of nowhere hunting down creatures. They might even have to join forces with an army to bring down brutes like the Undead Zombie Trolls.
Another great bunch of models for the Undead to help bolster their ranks. I think the poses are a little wooden and stiff but otherwise they have a nice degree of character to them.
What's your favourite from this new line-up?
"This is certainly a big step up from their previous dragons..."

This dragon is part of one of the Dungeon Saga expansions that arrived here in NZ last week. I think it’s great. Riders look a bit perched. Perhaps a throne/saddle with a few banners would make them look distinct.
Exciting times!
I’m becoming very impressed with mantic at the moment. These figures are great, lots of character, especially the ogres and zombie trolls. After my Dungeon Saga paraphernalia arrives I think I’ll be taking a much closer look at Kings of War.
The Undead Trolls and Ogre Hunters are on my Christmas list!
(Along with Antares . So much good stuff, so little time!)
Mantics ogres I believe are now the best in the business, the zombie trolls are excellent, but don’t resemble mantics other trolls, too me they would make great zombie ogres.
Jesus Mantic, fill the gaps on your display models. What is this, amateur hour?
That’s the chubbiest dragon I have ever seen 😀
Those are really nice.
To be perfectly honest the dragon is horrible :p pose and tail are the most annoying features .. otherwise the DS package delivered and then some, just like these new undead ogres
come back and upvote me when you have held the thing in your hand 😉
I’ve held it in my hand it and I like the heft of the mini. Its a dragon snarling at the lowly thing or things attacking it. I think its good.
love the dwarf dragon ogre?
I rather like that Mantic are releasing non-KS funded models, gives something to retailers and increases the range for backers and new players alike. Will be picking up the Ogres, Undead and the Orc character. They are rather spiffing.
Dragon looks like it’s made from that rubbery plastic like the animals you get from toy shops. Other stuff looks great and am looking forward to their open day in three weeks.
I haven’t held one, but the paint job on both monsters is terrible, very, very basic, so this makes them look like cheap toys.
Have a dragon made in 1984 on my shelf made from that material, it’s the shape of the claws, wings, no sharp lines and the chubby look of the model that makes me believe it’s made of that cheap material.
Fits with mantic’s ethic of affordable armies. The look of the dragon bugged me at first but I can rationalize it this way: It looks like a Ray Harryhausen stop motion monster, and I like Ray Harryhausen’s fantasy movies.
I could actually forgive the soft features if it didnt have a tail thicker than the main body and if its neck wasnt posed the way it is. It looks like hes ashamed of something, or trying to eat himself .. its hard to decide really, it ewokes heavy cringing just looking at it though. No im not overreacting 😛
Not a fan of either of the big mounts or their riders, but I like the orc shaman and the ogre hunters!
I’m also not too impressed with the big models but the hunters and undead trolls I think look really nice.
The big mounts just look a bit chubby and even the claws look blunt and unthreatening.
I am not too impressed with the big models but as said by other people I think they would look better with a higher end paint job, I think the undead Troll are good though. I am working on turning some Warhammer Dwarfs I had into a KoW army. The only KoW model I have brought so far is Sevri and that is a nice model. Look forward to seeing the Dwarf Elementals and Steel Behemoth models.
Well, we can’t all be Angel Giraldez’s or Romains… It’s rather nice to see a company come up with pictures of their figures in a good tabletop standard. All those top notch paint jobs can become quite disheartening for an average painter
Ha – agreed! If I paint up one of these dragons myself it would look similar to these images. That is quite different than how my infinity minis look compared to Corvus belli’s pack shots.
Not sure if I like the Dragon. The Zombie trolls and Ogre Hunters however look rather cool.
The trolls and ogres look splendid. The same can’t be said about the dragons. Shame as I was looking forward to seeing how they handle bigger models and it seems to be out of their grasp at the moment. I’ll chalk this up to experiment and learning. Here’s hoping the next kick at the can turns out better.
aw man, gotta get me those hunters
The fisher-price paint schemes on those dragons are atrocious. The models themselves look ok – nothing special, but serviceable, but i’d like to see how they look with a decent paint job.
The other stuff looks solid. Loving those undead ogres.
Man with the mountain of ogre minis from the KOW kickstarter now the hunters along with the mountain of mdf I won from wargames tournements i’m going to be busy til xmas …..that’s xmas 2016 lol if im lucky
I think this is a step up from the last effort but they do need someone who specializes in sculpting large creatures. As a collector I want them because I tend to be a bit of a purist, however from an aesthetic point of view I might find myself looking at alternatives from other manufacturers to represent these guys.
Nice character though, maybe mount him on one of these
