Flames Of War For The win is back as Warren & Dave take a look at how to beat those stalwart, unmoving, and frankly terrifying, gun line armies from World War II

If you liked these tactics but want to know more then go Backstage and watch us talk about Advanced Tactics for gun lines and countering them.
How do you deal with pesky dug in enemies?
I thought you were only allowed one round of melee under the new version of the rules.
As long as you pass your motivation test to counterattack the assault continues until either one platoon fails there motivation test or is destroyed…
No, melee goes on and on until one retreats or one is smashed to pieces.
Or passes their motivation check and then chooses to break off…
For future episodes, I know you guys have touched on them but how about doing an episode looking at each of the national special rules and how this effects what choices you would make when constructing an army and the tactics you would use when fielding that army…
I think that the Stuarts wouldn’t need to take morale checks as they haven’t taken casualties.
I would love to see some advice on playing Soviets. They play very differently to most other forces. I know this may not be Dave’s area of expertise but maybe he knows someone who can help.
I wondered about the Stuarts’ check, too. But I now as you say it… right they don’t need to.
Moral checks occur if there is more destroyed than fighting and the platoon had teams destroyed / bailed in that shooting step, the platoon morale check occurs at the end of the shooting step so yes the Stuarts would have required an instant moral check…
Sorry confused myself with the xlbs episode there… In assaults as long as the enemy teams hit you, you must test to counterattack even if they don’t actually destroy a team… If the enemy fails to inflict any hits you auto counterattack unless its infantry against tanks which must always test regardless..
Lucky us Producer Bothi got his fingers on some russians. I wait for some advice here too.
with the tanks moving through the forest shouldn’t the tanks have made a bogging check?
If you play terrain as written in the rules, yes woods require a bogging check and reduce movement to slow going so 8″ for tanks…
So what idiot puts an uncovered gun line on a battlefield?
Battle reports.
David,
In additions to all comments above, you also have to remember that only the platoon being charged can counter attack.. In this case only the command team for the arty should have been able to do so.
Any platoon within 8″ of an assaulted platoon is a defending platoon and so can be drawn into the fight as any defending platoon can counter attack…however their should have been two motivation checks as there 2 separate platoons…
Got to comment on this as well: anti-tank guns and arty can move even without trucks, thus can manoeuvre to turn to face the enemy. When unsure, you should check your rules, just like we do!
Great showI I am glad you will produce another season.
Gun teams and staff teams can not move to counterattack but will fight if there is an enemy within range eg within 2″. The only exception to immobile gun teams moving is that they can still rotate around their centre point in the movement step…or rotate to face in the shooting step…
Exactly. A lot of the very heavy guns are immobile, which can be abused with fast forces.
I haven’t played in a long time but bogging checks would be needed and a little read of the rulebook before filming? Or consult your sonic screwdriver?
Love the videos keep it coming
Um, don’t gun teams save on a 5+?
If a gun team is gone to ground they get a 3+ save…otherwise as said 5+
just watched this and you could have shot as you can “Assault abandoned positions” (see page 150). So even if the all the teams withing the 4″ assault were destroyed you can still assault into where those teams were and automatically win the assault, then consolidate. And of course every gun within 4″ is automatically destroyed (they can’t move). The assault would have gone quicker.
