Gripping Beast have now released their warband featuring a young Harald Hardrada and his Varangian Guard. They come with an assortment of weapon options including regular Sword & Shield and Dane Axes too...

Heralded as one of the greatest Viking warriors of the age he fought in the service of the Byzantine Emperors for ten years honing his trade as a mercenary. He is shown here with a motley assortment of armour and a traditional axe alongside a curved Middle Eastern blade.

His Varangian Guard are just as well regarded as some of the fiercest fighters...

I like both of these sets and it's nice to see a splash of vibrant colour in a world where there was certainly a lot of mud and blood. I could see myself picking these up as Hearthguard units and adding them into a traditional force where the more professional fighters have gained more renown and better equipment.
