North Star & Osprey’s New Frostgrave ‘Nickstarter’ Begins
September 26, 2015 by brennon
North Star and Osprey Games have launched their Nickstarter, a self styled pre-order system crossed with a fundraiser, for their expansion to Frostgrave called Thaw Of The Lich Lord.
More on the expansion...
"Thaw of the Lich Lord is a complete campaign for Frostgrave that will challenge both new and veteran players. Through a series of linked scenarios, players discover the existence of a new power in the Frozen City, one who was old when the great city was still young, and who saw both its rise and its disastrous fall.
Warbands will confront the Lich Lord's minions, race against his agents to seize possession of mysterious artefacts, and brave the perils of Frostgrave in search of his lair.
Eventually, they will need to muster all their courage to venture into the depths of the city and face the Lich Lord himself."
This sounds like a great expansion and it's good to see that there is a focus on the narrative and scenarios drawing you towards that inevitable clash with the Lich Lord.
You can't do that without new miniatures though and the Nickstarter is looking to get a whole bunch of them added to the game as well as available through bundles too...
Models like the Giant and the Wight (below) are models that you'll be coming up against in the middle of the ruined city. The sculpting quality has come on leaps and bounds from the first iteration of Frostgrave in my opinion and I could see these being permanent favourites in many peoples collections.
Of course there are some helpful hands also on the way for Frostgrave include the Plastic Cultists (who might also be trying to capture you!)...
...and more focused individuals like the Crow Master below. There are plenty more personalities also on the way like Bards, Pack Mules, Gnolls, Ghoul Kings and Genies.
The Nickstarter has more information about the upcoming 'stretch goals' but it's already looking like it's going to be a cracking hit for North Star.
Have you put down your pre-order?

The crow master is my favourite mini I’ve seen from this range. Nice work!
We used to have a pet crow so the crow master is a must for me.
Great mini’s. I really like the wight.
Given how the sculptors are basically the same as the original Nickstarter, and they are all experienced sculptors, the quote “sculpting quality has come on leaps and bounds” really is a whole of journalist bullcrap. A little research goes a long way.
I don’t think it’s bull crap. I know it’s the same sculptors but I think the quality of their work is a lot better than the ones we saw a few months ago. Just because it’s the same sculptors doesn’t mean that he’s not going to improve/get better over time. For example – in my opinion – I thought that the original sculpts that we saw for Frostgrave were a little ‘mushy’ and the details were harder to make out on the models. The one’s we’re seeing above look much improved. The detail is a lot sharper, at least I… Read more »
So now I’m getting what’s going on here…
@robert take your beef out with them directly or at the very least try to be precise about what you disagree with when posting here.
It helps keep things constructive and if there is something for us to see or look into further it’s more obvious.
Well, that doesn’t make sense. Firstly, North Star is not responsible for the books. Osprey does Frostgrave, and the book has been in the pipeline for months, and is scheduled for a November release.
I think this “Nickstarter” is just for the minis. THAT’S what North Star does for Frostgrave.
Looking at the links, it’s completely about the miniatures. You guys need to do some more homework. Come on, Frostgrave is insanely popular. Don’t tell me BoW doesn’t know it’s from Osprey?
I did know about Osprey and it’s links – and as you look back over posts we’ve done about the game you’ll see that we have included Osprey in the posts (they are also in the sidebar as a category here).
With this post however I dropped the ball and didn’t mention many details I should have done. You are indeed right that the Nickstarter is aiming to bring the miniatures to life alongside the book and I will be amending it to be a lot clearer.
BoW Ben
I think it’s about time you gave Lake town a sprinkling of snow. This game would look great on there.
Well, this batch of minis really is a lot better in my opinion. I wasn’t tempted at all by any of the previous crowd, but I love the look of the Lich Wizard and apprentice and the sights. The armoured skellies are really nice too. They give a sense of what the lost inhabitants of Frostgrave might have looked like in life. Cool stuff!
Nickstarter is news to me, so thumbs up for Brennon.
Thumbs down for the rock I have been hiding under.
Although it is the same sculptors in both Nickstarters – in this one, most of the sculpts have been done by Giorgio Bassani, who only did a few in the first round. So I think most people will notice a difference between the two. I’ve been lucky enough to see a few resin master and I can honestly say that the Wraith Knight is one of the best sculpts I’ve seen in awhile!
