New Paladins & Terrain For Age Of Sigmar + Re-Potted Treemen!
August 1, 2015 by brennon
Age Of Sigmar takes over Games Workshop once more this week with releases featuring both terrain and models. Not only do we have two new terrain pieces, the Numinous Occulum and the Dragonfate Dais but also the Paladins are out in force. The Sylvaneth have also been completely repackaged with the new bases...
Fantastical Terrain
First up we're going to check out the terrain. The first piece below, the Numinous Occulum is a strange creation but one that seems very fitting for Age of Sigmar. It acts like a Magical Fulcrum (think Storm of Magic) and also gives you additional boons like changing die rolls and unbinding spells.
Next up we have the Dragonfate Dais which works for Priests rather than Wizards. Here you can pray to the Gods and be granted gifts by them if you are worthy. It also has a healing ability for all Blessed models around it, mostly the Stormcast right now, while also hurting Chaos models.
The terrain focus has certainly been around pieces that fit into the Stormcast Eternal way of thinking. This puts more fuel to the fire that we'll be seeing a lot of Chaos based terrain in the coming month of August where Khorne are going to shed blood across the stones.
Paladins Of Sigmar
I've always liked the idea of Paladins. Ever since Warcraft II Tides of Darkness they've scratched an itch so this new kit from Games Workshop certainly got my attention. The new box allows you to make Retributors, Protectors and Decimators...
Retributors were included in the main boxed game so some folks will be familiar with their rather insane hammers that can cause mortal wounds on hit rolls of a six. They were very instrumental in turning a lot of Ogres into dust a couple of days ago for me.
Protectors have longer reach with their huge glaives and are also focused on hurting monsters, turning singular wounds into multiple ones. They also get an inherent bonus against getting shot, deflecting arrows away with their weapons.
Last but not least we have the Decimators who are armed with those cruel looking axes. Not only do they get to lay waste to everything within reach thanks to their weapons but because of the gory nature of their business Battleshock Tests are harder to pass when they are around.
The Woods Live
Last but not least it should be noted that a whole range of repackaged Sylvaneth stuff is out now too. While we won't show it all (you've seen it all before) the Warhost below gives you an idea of what's back to supplement the campaign we see in the Age of Sigmar book.
I've always loved the Wood Elves in Warhammer Fantasy and the new Treemen models plus those amazing plastic Dryads have always been a winner. We had hoped to see the Branchwraith come out in plastic to support the new change but alas she is still in Finecast for now.
What has caught your attention?

Is it me or is the guy with the mace in every variation of the Paladin unit?
Appears that way
Yes the mace is the ‘Special Weapon’ choice regardless of the units weapons. You don’t HAVE to give a model it though, it is a ‘may’ in the Warscroll.
It is fairly punchy though…basically an AoE.
I am loving the Tree-men! They look epic! 😀
The GW US site doesn’t offer any of the Sylvaneth line except the Wyldwood at present. It all showed fine in the UK version of the site though.
Those terrain are really nice.
I like the terrain – but I am still coming to terms with the golden paintjobs – I keep hearing C3-P0 in my head, each time I see them. If I greyscale the images I like them better.
No not good, now I think they look like cyber men! The terrain is very impressive though.
Terrain… yes! Sigmarines, still “no”. Treemen… still laughable. I’ll take the Ultraforge one any day. Glad the dryads are still around. They are a nice kit, but as I feared, now you need to buy the compost piles too.
Is this going to be the trend? Combining recent bad sculpts with great legacy sculpts to use up excess stock?
Just for info @cpauls1 looking at the UK website, the dryads are also released as a separate kit. They’ve upped the number in a box from 12 to 16 and put the box price up slightly, but that means they actually work out less per dryad than the old box.
What you’re seeing here is the war host box which unlike the web deals, gives a genuine saving over buying the kits separately.
Hope that helps 🙂
Good to know @erastus . For a moment I thought we were going to be seeing bundles like the elf glider thrown in a box with two Pheonix Guard and the Dragon Princes.
That’s funny because if by the elf glider you mean the Lothern Skycutter, then that’s one of the few models I actually like from the High Elf range. Just shows how tastes differ. 🙂
Could also be because I’m mostly a gamer, and lean toward medieval realism, and therefore don’t have any use for it in our world, while you describe yourself as mostly a painter — I can see the appeal of it as a painting project. I paint because I must… but admittedly, in the last few years I have been putting in a bit more effort.
Look at those Decimators, mercilessly winding up the Khorne worshipers by pointing out that they have bigger choppers…. All immature humour aside for a moment, I like this release. The terrain kits are excellent and really fit the current lore and setting. As for the Paladins, I have liked the Retributors ever since I first saw them in the initial release, and I feel much the same way about the Protectors and Decimators – they look like they could take on the best of the Chaos forces and win, which seems appropriate for the elite of an army specifically created… Read more »
I’ve gotta say I love the GW treeman. He’s got a real Pan’s Labyrinth vibe about him somehow. The Sylvaneth feel like they need more options though before they feel like a full blown army in their own right. Perhaps something between a dryad and a treeman size wise?
Three kind?
Threekin even, once the auto correct let me write what I want to!
I really hope “Sylvaneth” become a full facton in time, I really like the Dryads and the treemen have a pans labrinth vibe as Erastus stated.
I like the Paladins and may buy a box in time to round off the AoS starter set.
The new Mantic treemen took pretty decent and are a step between the GW treemen and dryads. I’m going to pick a few up when they get released. For AoS you could base 2 or 3 on a large round base and treat them as a single treeman.
I think the Mantic treeman most closely resemble the GW Treekin as monstrous infantry, so you could use them as such as well. The idea of a group of them as a single treeman seem cool! 🙂
The Mantic Forest Shamblers are designed to be Monstrous Infantry rather than the full on Monster Treeman.
Mantic’s Treeman (known as a Tree Herder) is yet to come. 🙂
I’m looking forward to it. I also hope GW expand the sylvaneth range with new stuff. Just the two kits right now makes building an entire force look kind of samey. Yeah the treeman has what 3 warscrolls? They don’t look that different on the table though.
Yeah, they should make treekin into a plastic duel kit and give the branch-wraith a clampack at the least. Theres a lot of potential for other stuff too really. I shamelessly want some triffid-esque killer plants.
I love that Pan look the treemen have.
The terrain pieces are certainly impressive, the occulum one would certainly look at home as a crazy wizards lair or the like
I like these new guys. I really like the Mace the one guy is wielding. That just looks mean.
The terrain looks cool as well. Hope to get the Numinous Occulum for myself.
Watch out buddy. Here we dislike GW, especially the new AoS range and love Mantic stuff whatever ugliness they create. Remember that or you will be voted down badly.

The community rules are behind a paywall? (Backstage)
My bad. They aren’t the rules anyway, just a preliminary discussion about them.
Does one of the rules say You shall not speak truth?
@inhumanbookworm Why don’t you pay for backstage and you can find out for yourself.
@Solar – Ye I found the rules a little while afterwards right at the bottom of the page.
I know backstage is to help BoW, but things like discussing community issues should be available for well all of the community 😉
Just to make it clear the only reason I posted the link is so that @inhumanbookworm would understand why his comment was poorly thought out.
Im guessing that if he had read the link I posted he wouldn’t have posted what he did.
Anyway I am not going to derail this thread anymore!
PS I like the GW treemen but I also quite like the Mantic ones as they remind me of the old GW Durthu (sp?). I would try and find a way to mix both types if I ever collected a Wood Elf type force.
