New Beasts & Riders Coming To Kings Of War 2nd Edition
July 12, 2015 by brennon
Some new models have popped up for the world of Kings of War by Mantic. These might still be a way off but they certainly show a leap in quality (at least from my perspective). See what you think of the huge Obsidian Golem, the Soul Reaver Knights and some awesome Treemen...
Rock Made Life
As mentioned above the first model is that of the Obsidian Golem below. It is HUGE when compared to the existing one and a regular old Abyssal Dwarf. I think they've certainly pushed the boat out and embraced more of their cartoon look which is cool.
It would be interesting to see a range of these painted up in different ways to mirror various elements. While I know they are meant to be filled with lava I could see some with magic ice and nature energy too.
Blood Sucking Riders
Next up we have the Soul Reaver Knights...
I think that they've done the right thing when it comes to making them big and chunky looking, as if they could charge through a ranked up unit and split it down the middle. I don't think I'd go with an axe for the character of the unit though, would probably drop that for a sword.
Ancient Nature
...and now for my favourite. I love these Treemen below, looking (quite fittingly with the whole cartoon thing) like the Treants from Warcraft. Away from big burly Golems and armoured knights the look of these ancient and natural warriors takes the prize for today.
Once again I'd like to see some different versions of these based on the various seasons of the year. It could be nice to look at potentially weathering them up a bit more AND adding in things like lichen and moss to give them an even more ancient look.
Don't forget you can grab the new FREE rules on the link below and also the Forces of the Abyss list by being a Backstager.

These are looking good, KoW on the up and up!
Look very solid models – of course the true test for mantic is the quality of the models, some of their models have suffered a bad production processes resulting in very dodgy models that don’t match the usual quality of Mantic.
But we’ll see soon enough, very exciting.
Big rock thingy, can’t go wrong with that.
Now that Golem is a definite improvement in design from Mantic. Love it.
Not sold on the treemen. I like the reavers, though, and of course, I’m always happy to support Mantic, so may pick up a box.
I really want an Abyssal Dwarf army but I just don’t like the dwarf sculpts but Mantic sure do make a superb undead army. The Reavers being especially good.
Scibor makes some great abyssal-type dwarfs @wesadie1969 . They are a bit pricey, but if you’re used to buying GW, shouldn’t be a problem.
I’ll check them out, cheers matey.
Forgeworld do some nice ones too, as do Russian Alternative. You could always go eBay up some big hat Chaos Dwarves too (if you have plenty of money to spend).
Not sure why that deserved a negative rating. Just trying to help with alternatives but if people don’t like that I guess I’ll stop.
I prefer the old Obsidian Golem. A combination of the two would look great.
Vampires and treeblokes look pretty cool though.
Like many others I’m seriously looking at trying this game now that AoS has turned out to be a bust.
Bit early to call it on AoS, no?
For me it is already a bust unless they bring out a complete new rule set. While I don’t mind spending money, I do mind spending it on a game that is currently bad but might turn out to be ok someday.
Shame really. I tend to prefer GW models to Mantic and would have loved to get a Nurgle warband together with some Blightkings and Daemons but alas it was not to be and will likely build a Forces of Nature army instead.
Love those Golems and Treemen. As has been said, if Mantic can keep the detail for production, I’m sold, just for the minis themselves. Looking fun, but not total cartoon at the same time. Nice balance.
Those are looking really good.
Soul Reaver Knights are great. i`m getting 20 🙂
or 2 boxes of GW’s offering 😉 ..sorry couldn’t resist (they are the worst offender when it comes to GW overpricing though)
The undead things look ok, though i stull prefer the GW black knights.
The golem is unremarkable and boring.
The treemen look really poor imho. This cartoon thing mantic has going is really not my thing at all.
Then by all means use the Black Knights. It’s KoW, not GW ;-).
I think the big golem has different spine parts to make it an earth elemental too, or i may be talking rubbish, the kickstarter was a good while ago. Forest Shamblers look great, mini Treemen, exactly what I was hoping for. Just waiting for the big box in the post now 🙂
I think you think correctly on the golem / earth elemental combo. Probably a different head too.
Like the cartoony style. Those tree people are great, especially the fellow on the right with the perplexed look on his face. Clearly not sure what’s going down.
Mantic’s miniatures look to be improving, which is great.
Sometimes I feel crazy. Everyone says oo pretty and nice models but to mantic models look very poorly designed. They look like models from 30 years ago with bad proportions and posing. Is this the point? I just don’t see the positive aspects everyone else does. Disclaimer though I love the company and their core corporate values.
No your sanity as far as miniatures go is justified! :), it’s just a matter of taste and their miniatures are very cartoony.
There are plenty of mantic miniatures I’m not a fan of but from the elves and goblins I bought about 3 years ago to this, I see loads of improvement.
As you said their core values are on point and I think this makes people a bit more patient when it comes to the miniatures.
*insanity
I’m seeing definite improvements in Mantic miniatures quality, I think in another couple of years their minis will be very nice indeed and hopefully still reasonably priced.
I would happily buy all of the above models, which hasn’t been true for some of Mantics releases in the past.
I’m really liking the Great Obsidian Golem, that guy is a monster..literally. The test cast of the lower abyssal looks excellent as well. Just finished downloading the 2nd ed rules so I’m having a look at the nature and abyssal army, I’m interested in seeing what else is in the list and the fluff behind them both.
I may have to relent on the “no new models” Pledge for KoW2 and get the Soul Reavers the look the part more that the older ones
go on you know you want to, and that new necromancer with optional dead bits
Almost enough to make me regret doing KOW in 10mm but it fits on my table better!
