Turbo Boosting in the Scout Move – Do you get a cover?
July 27, 2010 by lloyd
Here’s a little question that has been popping up from time to time. Is it cheeky to ask for a cover save when you Turbo Boost Scouts in there Scout Move? Well Darrell thinks it is, what about you guys what do you say!

Bit of a Brian Clough comment there Darrel, “We’ll chat about it for 20 minutes and in the end realise I was right all along” 😛
Ok, now i just had to create an account.. Well, at the first glance you are right Darrall. BUT if you look closely at the Turboboost (TB) rule, you will notice, that it can only be used during a Movement Phase (MP). Still you can use it per RB-FAQ. On the other hand the Scout Move (SM) is performed exactly as in the MP. Additionally, Smoke Launchers can be used after the SM ( confirmed by the Blood Angels FAQ ). Taken together the rules point to this: Since it is allowed to use the TB during the SM, we… Read more »
im just glad to find out about “TB’ im a bet of a nub on the acout i dont get to play much as id like to …. but this just make me want to add 2 mor unets of deff koppters.
p.s.- WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!
I agree.
Reading the Turbo-Boosters rule, I have to disagree with Darrell. RAW says that when you turbo boost that you will get a cover save in the following enemy shooting phase. So if you turboboost in the scout move, even if you go first, you will get a cover save in your opponents first shooting phase(since that will be the following enemy shooting phase).
This interpretation goes even further but is breaking the game spirit imo.
Id say you would get a cover save if your opponent goes first. Unless you insist on going down the RAW route and want a cover save even if you go first … in which case you need to get out more!
If the rule says you get a cover save from turbo boosting and you’re allowed to turbo boost as a scout move then you get the cover save – to me the argu ….. discussion would be whether you got the turbo boost at all (haven’t read v5 rules yet :))
yes, this is the very key question, and GW FAQed it, the answer was: yes
I’d have to agree with everyone else… IF your opponent has 1st turn then you would get the cover save, as a scout move “is done exactly as in their Movement phase”. If not then it’s a moot point because in the 1st turn if you go 1st you have to “reset” your movement to: not move, move or turbo boost. Either way it’ll all be done in the normal 1st turn movement phase not in the scout move.
Ah, yes, this “reset” could prohibit the overlasting cover save, nice.
I disagree here is why
Scouts rule states “Any scout may make a normal move. This done exactly as in their movement phase”
so if you can do a normal movement then you get to TBoost
Now the cover save comes from the Tboost rule which means as long as you travel 18″ from the start position of deployment phase
Tboost rule “In the following enemy shooting phase, the bike benefits from a cover save of 3+ to represent the difficulty of hitting such a fast moving target In that enemy shooting phase”
Unless “normal move” is meant as their basic, unmodified move ie not turbo boosting 🙂
Again, TB is allowed during the scout movement phase. Imo it is RAW and addionally the RB-FAQ allows it, too.
It might be a bit cheesy, but I think that you do get a cover save from TBoosting in the scout move, and even if you go first and do not TBoost on your first turn then you still get the cover save as it basicly lasts till the end of your enemies “Next” shooting phase. If you scout boost and have first turn then your enemy has not had a shooting phase yet so it it would still get the cover save.
I think Darrell is right!! 😀
Scout move rules say “…done exactly as in their movement phase…” meaning it’s not a movement phase. I think Darrel is right. “…before the first turn…” also shows up in the rule. It is between the start of the game and deployment so to me it seems that the TB is reset at the first turn.
It says you may make a normal move…. is a turbo boost a normal move? This seems very unlike Darrel, but i have to agree that you probably shouldn’t get the cover save. Somewhere in the fluff it says that the scout move is to represent the unit/model moving forward and scouting ahead anything up to a day before the battle – at which point your turbo boost cover save isn’t going to help you. However, this is could be more to do with infiltrators since they often scout too. In which case its more likely the scout rule simple… Read more »
What is a normal move? Read the Scout rule. It’s a move, that is exactly done like in the Movement Phase. That leads to 12″ jumping with Jump Inf, 24″ TB with Bikes, 6″ for Inf and so on. The scouting unit type can use all it’s movement rules.
This is confirmed by the RB-FAQ, there is absolutley no need to argue about this. It’s crystal clear, imo.
Darrel’s best commetn ever: ‘Not to say that I’m always right…. but I pretty much am’
The cheese master is at it again!
I want a T-shirt with that quote on the back and the BOW logo on the front. XD
Well, i’d like to see Darrell convince this many people.
I agree with the general consensus, because the rules say that a Scout move is treated like a normal movement in all respects (except the 12″ from enemy) and Turbo-boosting gives you a 3+ cover save on normal movement in the next enemy shooting phase.
Ergo, you can turbo during scout, and the first enemy shooting phase gets a 3+ cover.
This to me, represents the Ork in the Deffkopta going “You lot are too slow deploying, I’ll do this myself”, and storming away in a blaze of exhaust and burst eardrums.
I’m with Darrell on this one. No cover save.
Explanation?
If I turbo boosted a scarab swarm would I get a 2+ cover save instead of a 3+.
yes, you would, imo. no RB with me atm, but i’m pretty sure swarms bonus is applied to all cover saves and is not restricted to those granted by real cover.
That is a fairly scary idea. Another trick in the Cron arsenal.
I agree 100%… No cover save. Just because TBing is done ‘like in the movement phase’ doesn’t mean that you get all that comes along with the rule that is granted when it is actually done in the Movement Phase.
dosen’t it say in the rule book under the scouts rule that units of bikes may not use their turbo-boosters special ability? Does this apply to jetbikes? If it does then this is a non issue.
Nevermind just realized that the FAQ covers this ( note to self read people’s comments before commenting) in that case then I see no reason why you wouldn’t get the cover save for the reasons that others have pointed out
Talk about supreme rules lawer. The scout move acts a normal allowable move because there obviously is no movement phase before the game begins. If it moved flat out, it gets a cover save.
I disagree 2
you get the cover save from moving with TB!! not from a movement phase..
This is like saying, that if scouts move into terrain during their ‘scout’ move they don’t get a cover save next oppenents shooting turn.
exactly!
Sorry, never got to thank you for your support on this, still learning the system (ie, anything computer wise) have put another post up re same topic. Have a question for the cheeseman if I can work out how to ask/send it? Any help? cheers.
I would have to agree with you Darrel
Why not just look at it in the spirit of what the rule is trying to achieve rather than going into the semantics of when it occurs during a turn.
If you do that then common sense says, they do get the save. I’m not keen on giving Orks any save but there you go…..
