New Space Marine Codex Up Next For Warhammer 40,000?
May 26, 2015 by brennon
It looks like the next big Codex and set of releases from Games Workshop for Warhammer 40,000 will be the Space Marines or Adeptus Astartes as they'll most likely be known...
I imagine we'll be seeing a new Codex, or at least a new supplement-type Codex that goes alongside a main one further down the line. The focus does appear to be towards the Ultramarines so it could well just be closing in on them as a Chapter.
The artwork is very nice that's for sure!

I’m sure it’s gonna be a ‘limited’ edition with Tau hide cover for £49 for like 12 pages.
Yawn..
Seriously, the Mechanicus stuff is nice and something new for once (still overpriced) but I don’t quite see the excitement in yet another (probably overpriced) Space Marine book..
Oh well.. Suum quique is the appropriate Latin phrase I guess.
The same tired old comments from people getting upset about GW acting like an actual company and not a charity. Yawn.
Whining about it being overpriced before anything has even been announced? Really? This is a new low for folk at BoW.
Suum cuique indeed.
…watch you don’t cut yourself!
“This is a new low for folk at BoW.”
If you really don’t like the BoW community then you don’t have to stay here you know?
Hmm maybe I was rude there, so I apologise I don’t want you to leave BoW or anything.
I guess my point is try not to criticise a “community” when you are disagreeing with one particular member of that community.
Have a good day though 🙂
As a whole, the BoW community is great. Unfortunately when a new GW article goes live, many seem to descend into petty name-calling and hatred.
My comment of “new low for folk at BoW” simply meant that by kicking off about something being overpriced before any actual release has even been announced is really scraping the barrel and beyond anything I’ve seen here previously.
@solar, as somebody who’s pretty much only interested in Forge World, I seriously think about quitting BoW on an almost weekly basis.
So isn’t it interesting that the BoW team itself work week in week out to make sure they don’t quit on you 🙂 @erastus
And that’s exactly why I don’t leave @warzan . 😉
@erastus
Don’t let the b****ards get you down!
Maybe he’s a tad pissed at the any and every opportunity to bash type shizzle solar, well it’s what i think sometimes anyhow having said that not everyones the same 🙂
haha yeah I know, I guess when people bash GW I don’t really care so much but when people bash the BoW community I get a bit uppity! lol
Im sure there will be a bunch of tired old positive posts in this thread as well 😉
I’m sure there will @hatamoto.
Just a bit fed up of the whole continual bashing on GW at every tiny little opportunity. Nobody does that to any other company. The article simply says that GW are probably releasing something to do with Space Marines next week and all of a sudden people are going crazy about it as if someone’s taken a steaming dump on their lawn and made derogatory reference to their mother.
Maybe they’re releasing an Ultramarines poster that they will give away free for the first 1000 people to tell them they’re tossers for doing so?
There are enough people bashing bad products on other threads. The difference is, no one rises up to defend them — the article, and ultimately the product, fade away.
@cpauls1
“There are enough people bashing bad products on other threads.”
There’s not even a product here to bash, let alone a bad one, yet the bashing continues. Show me another article from another company which gets such a ridiculous bashing for no apparent reason and I’ll defend that too.
I was thinking…”the song remains the same”.
p.s., I think Wacoshop are adopting the ‘carnival’ model for their business – churn out a load of shit for another year then they sell to Hasbro and flee the country with a suitcase full of cash. Just like the monorail guy in the Simpsons!
lol
Marines always sell well for GW. I suppose this was put in the release schedule in case the new Mechanicus stuff flopped (the Skitarri stuff seems to have been very popular considering the kits seemed to be sold out in the local GW store for a fair few weeks). As someone who has collected GW stuff over the years, I don’t think it is a massive surprise to say I’m not tremendously excited for this, especially so after we’ve just had a load of new stuff released (which was all new and shiney). Obviously this release isn’t “for me”. They… Read more »
The inks not even dry on the old one
Well, with the Codex Eldar going the same route, it looks like the lifespan of a popular force’s codex is now 2 years. That’ll be a drag for a lot of players.
The 2 year cycle might change- and for all I know, the new book is way better anyway.
Silly me, I thought maybe GW had finished with the codex creep and adopted the PP approach to army books. Release all up to date codexes then release campaign or sub faction books that provide new units and rules to a variety of armies in one go rather than just a rehash of the old ones. Ho hum and the carrousel takes another spin.
AWESOME!!
@lunchbox
Woah..I’m sorry to have offended you by posting a slightly negative/ ironic remark on GWs codex policy.
It won’t happen again.
And I sincerely hope someone else will be taking over my rank as new low within the BoW community soon.
Careful! the GW thought police are on to you 🙂 . As you can see above, you can get a “negative” just for laughing at someone else’s comment. So… you’re off the hook, as that certainly qualifies as a new low.
Regarding the previous comments and fully expecting a mouthful back: Steady on guys, it is only a game!!!
rabble rabble rabble!
I have to say that even though people on BoW do sometimes wind each other up this is still by far the least toxic online community I have ever experienced!
You are right there @solar
That’s the main reason I get annoyed at the senseless whining on GW posts. If it was about any other game / company I’d get just as annoyed. The community at BoW is great for the most part and the content is fantastic which is why I come here in the first place and why I continue to pay for a backstage membership.
I have to admit to a certain amount of bias as I find GW generally questionable but I will leave my opinions at that. One thing I do think is totally out of order is telling other people how and what they should enjoy, or implying that they are in some way stupid or whatever for doing that. I may even have done that in the past during some more heated discussions and is something I actively try and avoid doing now. I have a metric ton of GW plastics at home, and I really enjoy some of the blog… Read more »
I’d say this is a very long way from being the least toxic online community that I’m a member of, but I take your point @solar . It is much better than many others. I’d probably think it was the dog’s proverbials if it was Infinity or Bolt Action, or basically anything other than GW/FW I was into 😉
I see your point, would you say that feeling is caused by the fact that you feel some people are having a go at you for being a fan of these companies, rather than criticism of the actual company itself?
Eg If I have a moan about GW for being expensive that is ok, but if I moan about GW and imply that if you buy GW you are somehow in the wrong that is what gets to you? (Understandably so).
That’s exactly it @solar . I’ve been very critical of GW and some of its releases myself and it doesn’t bother me one bit when other people are. What gets to me, and it doesn’t matter what company it’s about, is when a small number of people on BoW start bashing other gamers. We see it far too much in GW stories. there are a small number of individuals who do this on a regular basis: piss taking and derision is not genuine criticism, it’s just juvenile. These same people then cry about GW thought police when they are are… Read more »
Not very easy to dispute any of what you just said. Maybe some people need to think before they post whether their intent is really to critique a company or actually make somebody feel bad about themselves…
It’s toy soldiers and I’m 41…..it’s all wrong solar.
hahaha so true, I’m 30 and sometimes as I’m making a tiny little toy soldier I do kind of look at myself and think “what the hell am I doing?” then happily carry on.
If someone wants to complain about the price of a GW price, they are perfectly within their right. I certainly can’t defend how Dire Avengers went down to 5 a box and yet remained the same price, or that Scions being sold as 5 a box is great either. However, there are some who come along to every GW article, and will complain about the price, and that the models look like toys that only 12 year olds would like (i.e. if you like this model, you are a 12 year old, although I’m pretty curious how this is a… Read more »
This + loads ^^
I have no problem with people complaining that the prices are too high for their personal preference but making others out to be idiots for paying those prices is a different matter.
Again, if the miniatures are not aesthetically pleasing to you, by all means, say it. Just don’t make out that anyone who does like them must be blind/a sheep/12 years old.
I am sure we all want this community to be a pleasant place to visit and by taking a little time to make thoughtful posts we can all make it better for everyone.
Ironically, this thread has gone all 12-year-old rather quickly.
I haven’t bashed anything, as there’s nothing to bash (as someone already pointed out). I merely laughed at a shock-humour comment. The mud slinging directed at unfavourable comments, on the other hand, constitutes the majority of the “whining” on this thread.
They’re game miniatures, people.
Nice bit of artwork of the Ultramarine getting fitted into his battleplate. It is always interesting to see what the Astartes look like off the battlefield. I also like that Gladius pattern powersword. I wonder if this might be a more inclusive ‘Codex Adeptus Astartes’ this time around? With images of upgrade sprues being released for Dark Angels, Imperial fists and Ultramarines aleady floating around the internet, it is conceiveable that GW may be planning to consolidate some of the different chapters into the core space marine codex to avoid having too many codex’s dealing with various space marine chapters,… Read more »
The only thing i want to say… GW should pay extra royalties to THQ and the people that made that epic song… it makes anything epic, ANYTHING! I wish THQ had survive 🙁
Me too! Sorry I also need to reply to your last msg
2 year life for a £35 book is a joke, 2big part of thje reason I am not playing and my armies are on the potential sale pile. Wonder what the marine are going to find in the cupboard this time – comabt suits with terminators in or full russian doll with suit for centurions?
On a positive note leaks are showing chapter specific upgrade sprues that I can get behind.
Oh no.. marines again… 🙂 Okay I understand.. that is the most salable army in their product line.
BTW: Where is WARHAMMER Fantasy? I’ve not seen any updates on that since the last year.
Being reshaped into a skirmish game last i heard (only rumours)
The hobby opinion police is at it again .. that if anything is old and tired. Especially when we start to pretend the negatives have no reasons to be expressed. Why would the original post be annoying to anyone unless it hit some particle of insecurity about how you feel about GW? Am i wrong?
No problem with anyone saying negative things about GW products (or any other product for that matter) so long as it’s done in way that doesn’t make other gamers out to be idiots for liking GW products (or any other aforementioned product). If you don’t like something, by all means tell us why. The original comment annoyed me simply because it was the first post on the article and was yet another post whining about GW prices when the article didn’t even contain a product or anything that has a price as yet. If the initial post had read something… Read more »
Are you suggesting a comment like that couldnt be based on what we already know about GW pricing and how people think they spam condexes? Would this be the release that remedies all the mentioned issues? perhaps, but i think people would need to see this more frequently to beleive it.
Surely if to be taken seriously, comments on an article such as this should be about the content of the article, not people’s existing preconceptions about other products.
It’s like saying you dislike a certain food without trying it, just because you’ve disliked foods made by the same manufacturer.
No its like saying “i expect food number 10 to be horrible because food products 1-9 have all been”, and it may stop many people from trying dish number 10. Whats strange about it? 😛 seriously .. its a perfectly valid expectation considering past experiences.
To follow this analogy, if you’ve disliked foods 1-9 why are you still at the restaurant? Why are you trying to persuade others who have liked foods 1-9 that they are silly for doing so?
He is at the restaurant to warn other people off the breaded dog turd, #10 on the menu.
say you like the atmosphere of the place, the people who come there .. and once upon a time they even had good food at decent prices. You are invested.
Ok this probably isnt the best analogy for the purpose, but what remains is that people are often invested either emotionaly or on a materialistic level. GW has created something amazing with 40k and fantasy. Dont forget that.
True, some people are just invested in the universe/world of the game, but I still don’t get why they purposely try to put others off playing it by making them out to be fools for spending money on it. Surely if that universe they are so invested in is to continue, then the more people who continue to play the better?
For a lot of gamers, they became invested in GW, then felt betrayed by them. That same investment in the setting that led them to spend thousands of hours and dollars on cool 40k forces has been betrayed. Giving up on that kind of investment requires a lot of investment as well. So people who have dropped 40k after painting five armies will have a very difficult time being indifferent to it. They’re now invested against it. Of course, they’re generally arguing against people who have also spent thousands of dollars/hours and are still invested in GW, so we end… Read more »
Yes, @odinsgrandson ! Hard to calculate how much I’ve spent, and it was difficult to walk away when I realized I was being duped.
There is, however, a method to my madness. While I’ve long since moved on to other game systems, Like @solar , I have a ton of GW plastic, and am still fond of many of my “old school” figures, and would like to see GW return to that “Golden Age” of a decade ago. Obviously that’s not going to happen if people are content with what they’re tossing out the door now… sad, really.
Still no reason to try to make others feel bad for playing it is there? Why try to spoil other people’s fun? Other than to be spiteful and vindictive because the game you want to play doesn’t exist anymore and you feel aggrieved that others are still enjoying it while you aren’t. From looking at the ratings on various comments on this article, It is fairly plain that this is however a sentiment shared by a limited number of people here at BoW. You would all rather belittle your fellow man for not sharing your views than to accept that… Read more »
and ‘Whining about it being overpriced before anything has even been announced? Really? This is a new low for folk at BoW’ could have been phrased as
‘I think it is a little churlish to condemn the price when the products and the prices are unknown’
Goes both ways, we can all improve our communication skills, we are all geeks on the internet making an allowance for communication issues is a good plan. It reduces the spiral argument arising which is tedious for all.
You are correct there, I could have been more sensitive in my response.
On the artwork, think its really cool to see marines outside of the obligatory power armour for once. Id definatly buy an astartes artbook showing the whole making of and up to complete marine .. if reasonably priced that is.
That piece of art is great. It is indeed nice to see them out of battle for a change.
I think he looks like @deaddave 😉
one of the guys in the back must be brother Justin, unboxing forgeworld power armour 1:1 scale 😉
Bloody hell, he actually does!
Ok heres my opinion, as I used to be a ‘GW basher’, but I grew out of it. I started the hobby on GW, as far as I was concerned it was the only company, and the only few games, I invested every spare penny and hour of my spare time into it, but over time I became spiteful as I felt cheated and abused by price increases and practices that at the time I perceived to be unfair to ME. I lacked the maturity to see that they are a company, and this is a business. When a new… Read more »
Is it just 2 years between codices now or 1 year? It was only 1 year between two editions of Imperial Knights. OK now it appears its 2 years between Eldar and Codex Space Marines changes. Then there’s only 2 years between 6th and 7th edition. :-/ It is not naive to suggest this is a bad policy, especially when it comes on top of falling sales, a reduction in product lines and 100% price increase in some cases less than 2 years (in a world economy that has shown deflation or at least poor growth). It only suggests a… Read more »
If it fixes the marines some units are well nasty if your not a Space marine player ….. Just hope they roll out the other 3 of the chaos god codex might dust off my tzeentch army then …. I would snap up new thousand sons , death guard and Empors children minis !!
