New Warhammer 40k Assassin Game From Games Workshop? [Updated]
April 20, 2015 by brennon
A sneaky trailer has popped up from Games Workshop showing off Officio Assassinorum member (Vindicare, Callidus, Eversor and Culexus) artwork and what appears to be a grid-based board that could be the start of a new board game style experience for Warhammer 40,000.
Update: It seems like this is going to be a self contained product that will lead on to the release of the new plastic Assassins later on down the line. Rumoured contents are...
- 4x Assassins (one for each of the houses below)
- Chaos Sorcerer in Terminator Armour
- 3x Chaos Space Marines
- 15x Chaos Cultists
- Tiles, Counters, Dice & Scenario Booklet
...and all of this is remoured to retail for around $100 or so. You can see the new Assassins in all their 'leaked' glory HERE.
So, let's have a think. It would make sense to take these really cool characters from the Warhammer 40,000 fluff (and some of the best models) and then use their very different abilities and styles to make a team of Assassins that has to go up against a cult of Daemon worshippers on some dark and foreboding planet.
Could we see this become something of a Space Hulk type affair where you have one player controlling the Cultists while the other player(s) look after the Assassins?
I could see this being quite the winner if they do go down this route!
What do you think?

Just re-releasing the models me thinks.
OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!! just take my money!!!!
on a more serious not…. OMG OMG OMFG!!!!
HE’S GONNA BLOWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!
@shyvax If you can take it……you should have a look at bols. They have a WD cover with all four new assasin models on the front. Nice…..
Clearly what they should be doing is a heroQuest Mordheim type game set in 40k.
Questheim,MordQuest and HeroHeim 40.000 respectively are all available for rights transferral.
I think you(GW who obviously reads everything I write) Already have my address to send the contract. I’m the guy who keeps sending rules proposals for Felix & Squatrek 40.000 fleet battles.
and this weeks restraining order goes to….. 😉
:O What did you do Willy? What did you do?
Is this the 25th April release? I think I’m going to cancel my Salute ticket and go visit my local GW store instead 😉
The 25th April release, is all of the Eldar stuff; most likely, you’ll see pre-orders go up on the GW site on the 25th, with the game being released the week after.
Any idea what time of day the pre-orders usually go up on their site? I usually take a pass on these limited run GW releases, but this one has me interested.
I think I read somewhere, that GW are changing (or maybe they have already?) how they do pre-orders on their site. I believe pre-orders might be going from Friday evening, to Saturday morning. The theory is, is that GW came to the realisation that it was rather silly people would go in on a Saturday to get the new things, but there was the chance that if they did a pre-order while in the shop, there was a chance pre-orders were sold out by that point. I probably haven’t been all that helpful in saying it could be Friday evening… Read more »
Pre-orders go live on a Friday night at 7/7:30PM usually. The ‘Saturday’ part is going to get your White Dwarf Weekly and seeing what it’s all about inside the magazine.
We’ll probably be seeing some leaks soon anywho for this…

The poster in the Norwich store mentioned (IIRC) changes to the pre-orders beginning 25th April. It would be 10am on a Saturday, though it wasn’t clear whether that applied to both stores and online.
Times don’t help without a timezone. 7pm in England is fine since I’m in Texas and it would go up before I go to work. 7pm here in the states and I’m screwed because I’d be at work and if it’s a limited run it’ll probably be sold out before I get home. Hopefully it’s not limited and they’ll make as many as people order.
Does the US site/stores not do their own separate pre-orders?
The video says “In Store 25th April”…
Its rumored to be a co-op game for 1-4 players so its solo playable. The rumored components are, 4 new plastic assassin models and they are opposed by a chaos sorcerer in terminator amour 3 chaos marines and 15 cultists. All the Chaos models are rumored to be existing models. So 3 of the 5 man cultists boxes one of the basic 3 man Chaos MArine box and the character. Kinda sux but not surprising and will prob still be a decent value if its priced around 100$ as the assassins would prob be around $20-$25 each It will also… Read more »
Curious. If it involves some kind of persistent leveling of your characters or a random scenario generator then I’m 100% in.
i’m interested in the enemiesincluded in the box!^^
no tyr no party!^^
This could be cool, but id like a receipt that GW intends to continue support the game after release before thinking of buying anything.
Pretty certain it will be fire and forget – with models becoming available later apparently
nothing to get hyped up about then, as usual
Why? Not every board game needs to have expansions. If it’s a standalone, fire and forget game it will still be fun and if it does well and leads to more games of a similar nature in future, that’s great news as well.
Im thinkg there is a tile set too , looking at the vid and the floor , it seemed to me very spacehulk in look?
Interesting…
The assassin models used to be some of my favourite models in 40K when I used to play it. I may get this, but I hope GW does not make this another limited edition release.
It is rumoured that the assassin models will be released independent from this game at a future date; the CSM / Cultist models already exist.
So I guess the only thing that might be limited (I don’t think I’ve seen anything to say this will be limited a la Space Hulk), is the availability of the rules + tiles
And I’m sure the rules will be available to download by someone. And people can always make their own tiles and counters. Cards are a bit trickier but not impossible.
If i manage to get it for less than a $100 i think i’ll buy it, like both assasins and chaos marines, it will be a good to play that board game plus some games of Kill Team and maybe start a 500 pts Chaos Space Marine army. If i’m able to use those assasins in an Imperial Guard army them i’m sold.
I’m glad to see GW make a new board game. Having just two games doesn’t really make them much of an actual “games workshop” these days, especially when third party companies have been making games with their license instead of GW doing it themselves.
Hopefully they’ll make a few more games too. I just hope this isn’t another limited run like Dreadfleet was, even more so if the minis are really nice and the game is a lot of fun to play.
it depends on game mechanics but im interested.
It is nice to see GW making a board game. They used to be big on board games, and they had some classic ones, but then they got rid of them in favour of just 3 games. While FFG have been making board games based on 40k and Fantasy, GW need to also explore this area themselves. It may attract lots more new players and allow us to explore the 40K and fantasy worlds in new ways.
Plus I love the assassins, especially when I used to play “one man army” missions with them.
It looks like the pong remains the same. Limited edition? Until they find some more at the back of the cuboard…
From what I understand it’s limited to circa 4000. It’ll be £70 (ish) and it’ll sell out in 5 mins. With only 4 new sculpts in the box I really cannot get at all excited about this. I hope that down the line the assassins will be released separately, though I suspect that’ll be doubtful.
Having recently got into Imperial Assault I find myself strangely ambivilant to this. I’ll wait to see a bit more info about it, but thus far the trailer isn’t exactly blowing my skirt up to be honest.
Could be another Space Hulk classic, or it could equally be another Dreadfleet sunken wreck 🙂
Looks promising, then I see the words “limited edition” and decide I really can’t be arsed.
also shouldn’t you be working on your welsh?
They’re coming along 😉
If the opposing forces is not as rumoured but unique and interesting this could tempt me, if its a rumoured think I will pass.
@dags I think it’s almost certainly existing models for the majority of the set, the only new sculpts being the 4 assassins.
@tresilliian, well that’s some cash saved. Missed opportunity to my mind but sure it will sell.
yep, missed opportunity .. seems to be GW:s way these days
I like the idea of the boxed game!
na not bothered to be honest, I’d looking forward to seeing the add on for imperial assault and AVP
anything to do with the assassins is a big yes from me 😀
and I really like the idea of co-op rules, here’s hoping the game is good 🙂
… could be a sign of a resurgence in the board game side of things from them 🙂
one good game like that a year could be a game changer 🙂
I know several people who don’t play wargames, but got copies of space hulk the week of release 🙂
… maybe they have teamed up with FFG to do the rules and board tiles again ? 🙂
It would be quite amusing if this was the “big thing” all the Warhammer Fantasy bubble rumors have been talking about.
Problem:
Will it be limited edition?
I’ll wait till they come on the market as seperate clampacks as I only want the one that is a Blank as I like the subtle connection to the old necron pariahs – would be cool to do it up as a “fallen” assassin that has sided with my necron dynasty, with some subtle conversion and a suitable colour-scheme!
