ThunderChild Miniatures Closes In On Final Hours For Wasteman
April 2, 2015 by brennon
ThunderChild Miniatures have had great success with their Wasteman Kickstarter and they're closing in on their target goal of £20,000 with nearly £17,000 raised already. With just over 50 hours left to go they have some pretty crazy stuff for you to check out!
The Pledge Levels
First off we have the most important thing and that's those pledge levels. Two of them are shown off below which include a mass of different miniatures alongside the rules and everything else you need to play. Delve in and see what you think...
I love the fact that, yes, you use bottle caps for this game. The miniatures have a wonderful old school feel and design to them that makes you think of strange television shows that were on really, really, really late at night during the 80's and 90's. I could even sense a bit of Garth Marenghi's Dark Places in some of the 'feel' of the miniatures.
The Miniatures!
Talking of miniatures I reckon we should have a closer look at some of the Kickstarter Exclusive models and those that are coming as part of stretch goals and other targets within the campaign...
As you can see the old school feel permeates everything that you see for this game and the real charm of it is that there is a sense of dark comedy behind everything you see here. Even when you check out the gameplay video (shown at the top of this piece) you'll be hit with a smirk as you watch it and the way the game is portrayed.
Above are some more of the miniatures that we've seen in updates from the mind behind the game at ThunderChild. I love the quirky characters and mutants all with their own strange personality built into them.
All of the miniatures are going to be in 35mm scale making them a bit bigger on the battlefield and the material they'll be cast in is metal. The model count for the game is also very small from between five to twenty models slugging it out in the wasteland.
The Game
Here's a little bit on the rules for this wasteland game...
"During a game of Wasteman, comrades take it turn to activate individual figures to perform several actions; such as attacking, moving, hiding or even bringing people back to life with the power of their mind in some cases! Figures can normally only be activated once per turn so you have real scope for strategy – goad your opponent into activating the wrong figure at the wrong time and they could be left open to all sorts of cunning shenanigans!"
"Figures take different kinds of damage – they can be spooked, crippled, seriously injured, or killed outright. To make it easier to remember what’s happened, each figure comes with a base equipped with slots and removable tokens. These are cast in high quality resin and are included with all but the largest figures. Each figure will receive 1 base out of 10 designs selected at random."
...and real kicker is the addition of cool MAD cards which make the action even more quirky.
"M.A.D cards really bring the crazy to the game! Each comrade receives a hand of 5 M.A.D cards that can be played at any time (for the most part) to either help yourself or hinder your opponent. There’s nothing quite like having the enemy boss abducted by aliens just before riding a conveniently timed tornado to the objective on the last turn! Though normally limited to 5 cards, you can seek the aid of traders or vending machines to top up your hand during a game leading to some very tense moment as your prize fighter sits in the middle of the battlefield kicking a coffee machine."
The look of the game might not be for everyone but the charming style and British 'craziness' that oozes out of the campaign makes this one to take notice of. The pledges have been climbing higher and higher and ThunderChild are very close to getting this funded.
If you've been won over by the look of the game then go and check it out to find out more about the factions. This is a seriously 'quirky' looking game worth your attention. Don't forget the absolutely MASSIVE beasts coming your way too!
Let us know what you think!

I really hope this will get funded!
I’m backing this one! The game sounds like a lot of fun, and I love the look of the mutated, weird and comical minis, and the artwork too. Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is a good analogy, it definitely captures the feel of bad B-movies of the 80s.
The guy who’s designed and sculpted all of this on his own has done an amazing job, so I really hope it gets funded.
Damn, just started writing this post before I saw @radegast6‘s and I’ve written the same line at the end of mine as his post, lol. 😀
Looks like fun but don’t have the funds at the moment 🙁 Hope it funds and I can pick it up later!
He’s already busted the £20,000 funding mark with 25 hours to go, so it looks like it’s made it! 🙂
@majordutch great minds think alike! I am backer too, shame that Jason can’t do Salute this year.
Haha, that’s right!
Yeah, it would’ve been great to have a go at the game at Salute. Maybe next year, eh? 🙂
Wargaming for Garbage Pail kids!
anyone else thinking “toxic avenger”? must find a mini mop for conversion 😛
Haha, yes, I thought that too. 🙂
I love this project!! I urge everyone to back this if you haven’t already it’s going to be rad-tastic. just look at some of those amazing models!!! I love the fact that over 1/3 of the rule book is about making up your own stats, but that each model still comes with a handy rules card! M.A.D cards looks azmazballs! lastly I love that it has an old school charm that I’ve never seen before…
Lets back this beast and make it happen 2 days to go…
I am tapped out for kick starters. Yet I am very happy this succeeded. Congrats to the creators.
Thanks 🙂
its done!!
its funded and stretch goals are getting smashed, its in its last 24hrs so nows the time to pledge before its too late,
I like the post apocalyptic theme but I don’t like the look of the models. I guess I am to spoiled by the detail of GW sculpts.
