Warhammer 40k’s Adeptus Mechanicus Start To Show Up Online [Updated]
March 23, 2015 by brennon
The Adeptus Mechanicus are starting to show up in a series of very tiny (and I mean tiny) leaks from the new White Dwarf for Games Workshop this coming weekend. A new faction for Warhammer 40,000 is a big deal!
Updated: You can check out some more of the leaks for the Mechanicus right HERE where we get a look at the rules for some of the new Walkers as well as the Skitarii Rangers which make up the mainstay part of the new force.
As you can see from the images linked above it looks like we're getting a Walker and some Troops at the very least at the moment. The images are very bad as it stands but hopefully we'll see some more in the near future and we can update you on the news.
The Walker looks like it's based on the Sentinel in design with four legs instead of the regular two you'd normally see. It also has a fair few more lasers attached to it. The Trooper is cloaked in red, as you'd expect, but with a neat backpack and a hood to make him look all the more menacing.
What do you think so far?

Not much to go on… sad to say it doesn’t look promising.
When I saw the first news that Mechanicus were being released as a codex, I was very excited. After all, the FW models of that genre has a nice and unique look. The preview shown above, however looks like some shoddy shed-built projects – almost orky. Guess I have to take the expensive FW way for building a Mechanicus Army.. It could have been so nice.
Agreed. After seeing that scyllax figure I’m thinking this will be a big letdown.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Trooper boxed set all comes together. I think I’m remembering this correctly, but one of the reasons why we never got long / winter coat guardsmen (i.e. Valhalens) is because GW couldn’t figure out how to release a set in which the coat would line up properly when you had a top and bottom half.
I think a similar reason was given wrt Sisters of Battle when it came to all their pieces of cloth.
and every other company got around that problem by casting legs and body as one piece saving space on the sprue for more accessories, like y’know more options than just a flamer, or if you’re lucky a flamer and a grenade launcher…
BoW, please, just stop covering GW products. They’re not a consumer or gamer friendly company at all anymore. Stick to the likes of Corvus Belli and War Hawk Games because those sorts of companies appreciate the community as a whole and the work that you do.
It would be ridiculous for BOW to not cover the biggest company in the wargaming industry. It’s more down to us to just opt out of viewing GW related posts if we aren’t interested in them.
Hard not to peek in on a GW thread. It’s like slowing down at a car wreck.
I’m always hopeful something good will turn up from GW, but I’m becoming less inclined to think they will suddenly get back to the business of producing the mini’s they used to.
Agreed willy2fly – whether you like GW, hate them, or just don’t care for their products one way or the other, you can’t just ignore them and hope to remain relevant as a wargaming news outlet.
Ignoring the elephant in the room rarely ends well, and for better or for worse, GW is still the market leader, and so is still big news in wargaming.
Trooper could be nice but the walker/spider thing looks horrible IMO
Way too early to pass judgement, but I am not getting that unreservedly excited feeling from these tiny glimpses.
@wargamereespainting I don’t disagree with you statements regarding GW as a company but BoW have always said they aim to cover the industry and you cannot do that by ignoring the largest player in the industry. Besides covering GW get a higher footfall of people who then see the other game companies products thereby raising their exposure. Given when you search BoW it states 40k in the title line the amount of coverage is actually very small.
Enemy sighted, reinforcements inbound. Return: 27th March for further information.Praise the Omnissiah!
Ah GW video’s, never fail to leave you unimpressed.
Over all those don’t look so good. For new 40k army they could had put more effort.
Interested to see these properly and in the photo size they were meant to be released in. They could be really nice models. I’ll hold judgment till then.
Personally i’d rather have seen the return of the Squats than The AM. Too early to say if I like them yet to be fair but looking forward to a full reveal. The FW stuff is very good, though it’s not an army that appeals. I iz all the way Nurgle innit blud.
You see, I was under the impression that Squats just didn’t sell, and that is the reason they went away. But reading stuff online, I do have to wonder if the number of people who want them back, were that bothered about them back in the day. In Epic, I liked them as a faction. All the bikes / attack trikes / Thudd guns / the different troops were all pretty cool, and I liked the idea of the Land Train Squats seemed to get instead of a Titan (sidenote; 40k needs a land train). At the very least, the… Read more »
You are correct that it was poor sales that did for them. Plus I hear they weren’t a favourite in the design studio either so there was no-one to speak up for them when they were canned. There are a lot of people who like them, though it’s debatable whether that translates to enough people who would actually buy them if they got a re-release. It’s a big investment to bring a completely new army into 40K (which is essentially what the Squats would now be), so I’d be surprised if GW did it. If they’re to come back at… Read more »
Chaos Dwarfs (not the FW ones) were stupid. They had stupid hats, stupid rules, and stupid units that were generally horrible to look at.
In no way is this opinion coloured by the fact that the chaos dwarf player guy I used to come up against, was one of the worst cheaters possible in addition to being an incredibly poor sport.
Another factor that hit the Squats was GW struggled to come up with a way to make them play significantly different from other armies. This was back when they wanted each army to have a distinct feel on the table top.
It will be interesting to see if they manage to achieve that the ad mech, although I think it is less of a concern for the studio now.
It is way too early to pass judgement on this release, especially with so few images that are so small and incomplete. I will reserve judgement until we get better pics and the 360 rotation from the GW website.
Still, it is good to see an AdMech release after all these years. Sometimes it feels like GW just forgets entirely about some of the most interesting parts of its own IPs.
During the dark years of the Horus Heresy, the Mechanicum of Mars could call upon warmachines of huge beauty and complexity. Constructs which appeared to mix elements of clockwork and high technology in a beautiful and sublimely tense juxtaposition of mechanical practicality and sweeping Art Deco curves.
10k years later their descendants, the Adeptus Mechanicum, go to war in ugly walking boxes that look like giant toys …
Sounds about right lol
it looks like somebody took a defilers legs and stuck a soviet kv 2 turret it on them i hope the troops look better
Pfft, I’m sticking with my FW.
what will be interesting is if rules for these appear in the HH stuff from FW going forward.
After all we can run speeders and dreadnoughts etc for the Legions.
Yeah, I want my skitarii 😉
I think it’d be great to see an apocalypse sized Ad Mech force. Throw in Iron Warriors or Iron Hands as allies too… it’d look so impressive haha

There not bad ……. well the infantry aren’t but…… not getting that money at the screen moment
These do look a lot more promising than the ugly spiderbox. Factor in the “painted to look like toys” effect and these new models have a lot of potential.
The infantry I am contemplating on a box or two for my 28 mm Inquisitor project. Walkers don’t do it for me.
Infantry with… with… ranged weapons. *Tear rolls down cheek.*
but what is up with the muskets? complete with wooden supports 😛
I really liked the look of that dragon walker, then i realized the pilot was armed with a very long electrical rod, not an insanely big gun … thats just what 40k needs to get even closer to fantasy; jousting
Great for herding cattle lol.
Taser lance is the name … the “geniuses” of mars couldnt convert its power into something that fires projectiles 😛 Id like to have a better reasoning behind all the melee weapons that isnt “because its cool”, cause it isnt cool when it just gets to slide in amongst a bunch of otherwise very detailed and thought out fluff.
I just noticed in the update that is a “driver” on those chicken things, lower down and totally exposed. “Quick! Get my pistol! Their tanks are attacking.”
Of course, it’s probably defended by a force field and a happy thoughts generator that makes incoming rounds regret their career path and trajectory.
Haha probably 🙂 happy thoughts generators (tm?) are probably the reasons fire arms are so relatively ineffective in 40k. I will settle with that, its the only thing that makes so little sense it cancels out all the other nonsense. As for forcefields and super heavy armour wearing CC specialists; “finally state of the art protection that ensures we can get close enough to do some medieval battering!” Seeing as close combat is a powerful “locking” mechanism that magically stops guns from working it should all make perfect sense ;p /rant off
Come on guys. That IS what makes 40K what it is. Heard of Rough Riders eh ?
40K was born in this insanity, it’s what made it what it was (taking from Dune etc.)
This stuff is BRILLIANT.
I love the madness of the chicken thing – it’s pure Blanche oldschool Warhammer 40,000
It’s insane. All these models are great in dags leaked pics
Like the chicken with the gun and gun shield. Been working on something like it with Robogear parts. Other one, not so much.
Rules for new models. http://www.talkwargaming.com/2015/03/new-skitarii-units-vanguard-rangers.html
Despite the initial disappointment of the spiderbox, these are actually starting to look very cool. I don’t think I’ll be buying though until there is word on how these fit into 30k, if at all. There has been speculation that the reason FW haven’t done 30k skitarii is because these were in development. However, it remains speculation right now.
If these do turn out to be 30k compatible, I can see a couple of those walkers acting as wingmen to a Mechanicum knight in my future 🙂
Will the 30k rules be a completely different ruleset or what do the rumours say? A more modern ruleset is something i hope for.
Think I will stick to FW.
The Vanguard and Ranger infantry look the part of Mechnicus aligned soldiers, and the bipedal walkers also have a nicely weird, eclectic feel to them that fits the way the Mechanicus is often described in the fiction. Things are looking up.
Not into the 40k universe, but the walker looks promising. A shame it will cost a lot, because it could be great in a Steam Punk scenario.
OMG!
I bow before the Designers. My god those Dragoons, my god. A true 40.000 addition. Nay, an addition to great sci-fi pictures in general. That thing stalking through mars’ Sands.
Miniature of the decade!
Look at the walkers closer, the front has a legless rider in black. He seems to be the true pilot or at least visor operator.
Objectively and technically I think they are good – but not to my personal taste. I want more of that medieval blanche weirdness, like a little was shown in with the FW scyllax. Seems a lot of people are happy with these though so hey, more power to ya 🙂
I think the stuff GW put out these days is very variable, but from what I can see of all of these figures so far, I think they look amazing!
Hopefully won’t be disappointed when we seem them in more detail.
